Flagstaff and Sedona, AZ - Exploring pueblo ruins, a volcano, and off roading in a RZR
We headed to Flagstaff, AZ to meet up with Tyler and Amber and kids. We explored pueblo ruins, an old volcano and then made our way south to Sedona, AZ where we found warmer weather and an amazing boondocking site with incredible views. We rented a RZR off road vehicle for the day which allowed us to explore lots of areas of Sedona all in one day. The icing on the cake was the hike to Devil's Bridge - an awesome natural bridge. We never seen anything like it.
Devils Bridge Sedona March '09
I was the lucky recipient of a trip to Sedona AZ. this is the view from the out of bounds trail that a few of us climbed up, located just above the Devils Bridge. Is it any wonder people liken time in Sedona to a spiritual event; the beauty is amazing.

My son Christian finds a bat on big rock at Slide Rock - Sedona, Arizona
A family could easily spend the whole day cooling off here at Slide Rock in Sedona, Arizona. After sliding down the rapids and natural rock waterslides, jumping off the cliff and having a family picinic lunch, consider taking a hike in the backwoods of this creek. It goes back for miles! There is a secret beach no one knows about back there but it takes a good hike to get back there. There is also a much larger rock 25 feet or more high to jump off of back there. At the end of this video my son is starting what ended up being one of the best hikes we've been on together. We teamed up with another group and headed back there, having to scale a cliff with our fingertips, climb under and over and through the woods .... but in the end, its worth it! We were actually told there was a huge rope swing back there but we never found it. We did find the beach with the deep pool damned up by rocks in the creek and the larger rock to jump off. Where was my wife? While we were hiking, she escaped the area to go shopping in town, we had no idea she was out souvenier shopping for her family and friends.
This video is about a bad with one foot stuck on the crevis of a large boulder. The other foot seems to be rubbed off to a nub trying to escape for hours maybe days, poor little guy. My son says its it was a vampire bat but it was just a common bat native to that area.
Getting to Sedona is easy! Fly into Pheonix and rent a car. Drive it north towards Flagstaff about an hour north and you will see signage saying Sedona left onto this other freeway here and you drive up through Oak Creek Canyon which is all five star golf course resorts (this is where we stayed @ Diamond Resorts. Just about 5-10 minutes up past Bell Rock, is downtown Sedona where all the cool restaurants and shopping is done. There are tons of 4 wheel offroad rental adventure services up there that offer a toured guide or for the more adventerous, you can rent your own quad or sandrail.

How to have an amazing ATV rental experience: Anza-Borrego Desert
Follow our travel blog: ContinentalDrifters.ca
The desert may seem barren, but out among all that sand you can find some pretty fun activities.
Renting a 4-wheel drive is the best way to see the sights here in the Anza-Borrego Desert not far from Palm Springs California. It's California’s largest state park encompassing more than 600,000 acres of badlands, palm oases, slot canyons, and cactus-studded hills. Much of the park is inaccessible to regular vehicles.
It's our first time off roading, and we're setting out slow, to see some of the top sites in the park.
First stop these bubbling mud holes known as the gas domes.
Here, natural gas bubbles from below the earth's surface year round, mixing with groundwater to create a flowing mud hole on the desert floor.
Next up we head west in the park for a place called Shell Reef. It's a bit of a mountain, and we have to park the buggy and climb to the top on foot to see what we came to.
There's a five foot thick layer of fossilized shells up here, and they're everywhere. This layer has resisted erosion thanks to its hardness and durability, so the ridge is preserved as Shell Reef.
We point the buggy north and start looking for - a large formation of circular rocks. The terrain gets very bumpy out here and the makeshift roads harder to follow. But we soon spot our stop.
Helpful signs explain that the 'pumpkins' formed naturally, the result of grains of wet sand naturally cementing themselves to tiny pieces of shell or debris, then growing over time before being buried in sand. Eventually they're revealed by erosion and then they get scoured away slowly by that same process.
The Pumpkin patch is pretty unique, and out here in the middle of actual nowhere, it's a pretty amazing sight. Rather shockingly people have taken the pumpkins over the years, so now the area is fenced off allowing only foot traffic.
There's one last thing we want to see-- the so-called Badlands- a series of deep canyons.
The trails through the Badlands are surprisingly easy to navigate and we get a chance to stop and take some cool photos and videos.
With the clock ticking down on our 4 hour rental, , we speed across the sand towards home base again. We're covered in sand, microdermabraded in places we never expected, and tired - but still high on our desert adventure.

Arizona ATV Adventure Tour
We visited Arizona for a family vacation and on the last day of our trip we decided to give Arizona ATV Adventure Tours a shot. It was awesome!
We took a guided 3 hour tour through the desert over some pretty rough terrain. Luckily everyone in our group was good enough at driving that no one get seriously hurt. Next time I go to Arizona this is something I'll be doing again for sure!
