Zell am See is calling
A day in the life on a Crystal ski holiday in Austria
Find your perfect ski holiday in Zell am See
__________________________________________________
From Lake Zell to the top of the Schmittenhöhe - it's easy to fall in love with this amazing town and ski resort. Which adventures would you choose on a day of ski and après ski in Zell am See?
Follow a couple on a Crystal ski holiday to find out what they got up to.
__________________________________________________
We begin the day at dawn - with Matt on his balcony at the Hotel Grand, Zell am See. Matt is joined by his partner Hayley to enjoy the great view and prepare for an excellent skiing day.
The Hotel Grand has a prime position right on the edge of Lake Zell - with many rooms providing the signature lake views that Zell am See is known for.
After meeting with their friends, Chris and Kirsty - the four make their way up to the base station, by free ski bus, for the Porsche designed Schmittenhöhebahn and TrassXpress gondolas. These gondolas give them fast access to the Schmitten ski area of Zell am See.
At the top, Matt and Hayley meet up with their Crystal ski reps - with such a vibrant and stylish uniform it’s easy to spot then both on the mountain and in resort. The reps are happy to meet up with you at times and places that are convenient to your needs.
The reps demonstrate a few of the excellent features of the Crystal Ski Explorer app – although it is really easy to use. They have a look at the piste map for the area – which is easy to zoom in on. They also have a look at some recommended routes – suggested itineraries created by our teams to try and make the most of your time on the mountain.
Getting around is easy. High-speed chairlifts – many with heated seats – whisk you around the Schmittenhöhe. Pistes are generally wide and forgiving for new skiers – with plenty of blue runs to take advantage of - however there are some more challenging red and black runs for the more advanced skiers and snowboarders too.
There are plenty of places to stop off for a drink or a bite to eat on the mountain. Popular alms - or mountain huts – for lunch include the Pinzgauer hütte – with melt off the bone ribs a bit of a favourite. Schnapps Hans is a notorious après ski bar on the Schmitten. Make sure you catch the final gondola down to avoid skiing back to town in the dark.
Zell am See is also neighbour to Kaprun. Kaprun has several smaller ski areas including the Maiskogel and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. On the glacier there is year round snow and it is even possible to try summer skiing. Matt and another friend decide to head for a drink in the Ice-Camp – a very cool igloo bar.
Back in town - as the light is starting to fade - we see a great view over the roofs of Zell am See and toward the lake from the rooftop terrace at the Hotel Heitzmann.
Hayley makes the most of the pools, spa and wellness facilities at the Hotel Grand – a great way to relax after a day out on the mountain.
Exploring Zell am See after dark is very popular. The town looks lovely – especially when covered in snow – and is lit up. It has a real Christmas-feel all winter. Villa Crazy Daisy is a popular place to grab a warming après ski glühwein or hot chocolate. If you’ve gone for bed and breakfast then there are plenty of excellent restaurants around town – including many hotels which have an à la carte menu too.
Matt and Hayley eat at the Tirolerhof – an excellent hotel with a remarkable reputation for comfort, service and food. And with a warming open-fireplace in the lounge it’s a great location to catch up on the day’s stories and adventures before heading to bed ready for another day.

Winter 18|19 in Zell am See-Kaprun
The end is near & so we decided to put together all the great moments this winter offered us. See for yourself!
Overview Zell Am See ski resort, AUSTRIA
January 2011. Zell Am See, Austria.
Zell am See-Kaprun a Local's Winter Tale - holiday in Austria
Matthias from Zell am See-Kaprun shows us the region’s two ski resorts: the Kitzsteinhorn and the Schmittenhöhe. The Kitzsteinhorn is a glacier ski resort, and therefore has year-round natural snow. As a former professional free style skier, the snow park is very important to Matthias, and the Kitzsteinhorn offers one of the biggest in Europe. The Schmittenhöhe is completely different to the glacier. It’s an overall larger ski resort, offering beautiful long forest rides with unbelieble views over Lake Zell. The town centre of Zell am See-Kaprun looks like a picture postcard with its medieval church and old buildings. After Matthias quit his career as one of Austria’s first professional freestyle skiers he took over the family businesses: Hotel Active by Leitner’s, a 4-star hotel in Zell am See-Kaprun, and the historical Winklhof. In his eyes the highest reward a hotel manager can receive is a happy customer returning.

Best Skiing in Austria 2019/2020 - we ski Zell Am See-Kaprun, Skicircus, Carinthia and Zillertal
Where would you go for an #AustrianWinter? Earlier this year we had some of the best skiing in Austria when we went to Zell Am See-Kaprun and Skicircus in Salzburgerland, Zillertal in Tirol and Nassfeld and Weissensee for skiing, skating and spa action in Carinthia. We had an absolute (snow)ball! From mountain to glacier skiing at up to 3,000 metres, to lakes where ice-skating is the order of the day, plus towns with gourmet restaurants and great aprés ski nights, Austria has it all. Check out our experiences in each place and you can read more about each on the links:

My winter-sports loving friend Shelley regularly goes skiing in Austria and I was thrilled to join her. A skier for more than 12 years, with a penchant for racy red runs and gutsy blacks, Shelley has skied across Europe, North America and even in New Zealand, but Austria counts as one of her favourite countries for skiing anywhere in the world.
Whether you’re a powder addict that loves nothing better than racing down the blacks and sloping off-piste or you're looking at places to go skiing in Austria for beginners, there is a ski resort for you. The four we visited also had other fantastic activities from lakeside spas to racing down the mountains on toboggans.
Been to other resorts that you love? We'll be heading back to the slopes soon, so tell us where you've found the best skiing in Austria in the comments!

Slope life on Schmittenhöhe - where to ski in Zell am See, Austria
Are you smitten with Schmitten? After spending the day up there on our #AustrianWinter trip, we are. You can read why here:
Experience life on Schmitten’s slopes here, with everything from skiing to snowboarding, skidooing and hitting up the après ski.
Zell am See-Kaprun is regarded as one of the most attractive ski regions in Austria and standing on top of the Schmittenhöhe surveying a panoramic view of the mountains as they drift into a valley where the town of Zell am See sits beside a huge glistening lake.
We skied around the Schmittenhöhe taking in its glorious pistes from the CityXpress lift all the way down to the Sonnkogelbahn. Sonnkogel with tree-lined red runs makes for a fantastic morning’s skiing and was basking in sunshine when we were there.
A real highlight though, as you can see in the film here, was going for gluhwein at a mountain hut and then how we made our way back to the lift. With skis and snowboards on we were pulled along behind a skidoo back up the mountain.
From there, at the top of Schmitten you can take the Trass race slope (black run 14) back into town, it is one of the longest black pistes in Salzburgerland and is a genuine thrill.

5 Top-Rated Ski Resorts in Austria | Europe Ski Resort Guide
5 Top-Rated Ski Resorts in Austria, 2017
More casual and laid-back than the glitzy resorts of France and Switzerland, Austria's ski scene exudes an old-world charm, with trail and lift networks linking small Alpine villages surrounded by spectacular snow-covered peaks. From most of these cozy villages, you can ski all day without ever repeating a run, whatever your level of experience, for Austrian terrain ranges from some of the world's steepest runs to gentle slopes and trails perfect for learners and youngsters. But what has boosted Austria's popularity with international skiers in the past few years is its value for money. Holiday packages, lift passes, lodging, dining, ski schools, and even après-ski activities cost less here than in the French or Swiss Alps, and you're sure of warm hospitality and high service standards, as well as sophisticated lifts and snow maintenance. Austrian skiing is also not limited to winter - glaciers provide year-round snow, and most ski resorts are only an hour's drive from Innsbruck, Salzburg, or Munich international airports. Here, five ski Resorts in Austria.
1. Kitzbühel
2. Innsbruck
3. St. Anton am Arlberg
4. Lech-Zürs am Arlberg
5. Saalbach-Hinterglemm
