4D: Running for those who can't
Reported by: Sherry Christian
A year ago, a Dauphin County man decided to make a difference in the lives of people with muscular dystrophy by running a 5K in all 50 states in one year -- and as of June 19, 2014 - he only had one more race to go to achieve it!
But, Jeff Fazio is far from the finish line as he has now organized a 5K for the local MDA office and continues to run for a cure.
Jeff says, Even though the journey is coming to an end, the story is not.
And what a journey it has been for Jeff Fazio - who, once he crosses that finish line in Hawaii on June 21, 2014, he will have achieved his goal of running a 5K in all 50 states -- in one year!
When we first met Jeff back in October of 2013, he was half way there, having done 25 races!
All inspired by his co-worker at Harrisburg Area Community Calendar, HACC and now good friend Dee Gerber.
Dee has muscular dystrophy and when she found out Jeff had started running, she asked him to run for those who can't -- and the 4D 5K project was born.
And so were some challenges.
Jeff says, You never know what obstacles are going to be coming your way. We had two events cancel along the path, but we were able to make them up somewhere else. I'm glad to say that we're here and at the finish line.
After Hawaii, Jeff has one more finish line to cross and he's hoping hundreds in Central Pennsylvania will cross it with him.
Since muscular dystrophy was the cause that got him running for those who can't -- he has organized a 5K to benefit the local agency.
Dee says the MDA Harrisburg office serves about 1,400 families and the money from the 4D 5K will stay local to help those families.
Dee says, Anything from scooter repair, wheelchair repairs, you know your normal everyday things people take for granted, that we need to basically survive and have a normal life, if we can. Literally, each run he does is one step closer to us finding a cure.
Support for the 4D project has really taken off including a fundraiser at the HACC bookstore, all the money going to the local MDA, but Jeff is also inspiring total strangers, runners who don't even live in Pennsylvania.
Jeff says, We have people who are running either virtually in their states we met while we've been out. Or they're physically here. We have people flying in from Texas, driving down from Rhode Island, it's going to be a magical event.
And you'll be able to read all about it, too, as Jeff is writing a book about his experience.
Though, after talking with him, I wonder if the last chapter will ever be written.
Jeff says, There are still many folk in this country living with muscular dystrophy. There's still a need for services and support and hopefully the fundraising leads to a cure, so somebody doesn't have to run for those who can't, we can all just run.
The 4D 5K is Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Fire Station One located at 8th and Orange streets in Lebanon, PA.
