Egypt Visit - P33 - Boat Trip To Nubian Village - Aswan - 7rm Travels
The Nubians were an ethnic group coming from southern Egypt and northern Sudan, who during the course of history started a number of settlements along the Nile River. They were famous for their horse riding skills and their impressive marksmanship with bows and arrows. They where generally held in high regard as a strong cavalry force.
During the course of history, the Nubians typically blended and merged with the Egyptians during the Pharaonic age. In fact, a number of ancient pharaohs were of Nubian decent, and their legacy has inevitably lived on. These days, there are still several Nubian communities scattered around the country. Many of these small villages have become very popular with tourists nowadays.
Although some travel guides speak of a single Nubian village on Elephantine Island, there are in fact two villages. The first Nubian village is Siou village and the second is called Koti village, both of which run across the center of the island. The two villages are connected by a footpath, and collectively, they are remains of three distinct settlements.

Sehel Island - The Famine Stella
The island was known in ancient tiles as Setet,[2] and there are many archaeological sites, including sacred places, such as the temple of Anuket, the Egyptian water goddess, and goddess of the Nile's cataracts.
Seheil was home to a stone quarry for granite used during various Ancient Egyptian eras, and there are many inscriptions in the island's granite boulders. These inscriptions were usually left by travellers marking either the start or end of their journey to Nubia. There are several famous inscriptions that record ancient historical events. One is the Famine Stela, which is of Greco-Roman origin, but claims to record events from the time of Djoser and Imhotep. Re:
The Famine Stela was inscribed into a natural granite cliff whose surface was cut into the rectangular shape of a stela. The inscription is written in hieroglyphs and contains 42 columns. The top part of the stela depicts three Egyptian deities: Khnum, Satet and Anuket. In front of them, Djoser faces them, carrying offerings in his outstretched hands. A broad fissure, which already was there at the time of creating the stela, goes through the middle of the rock. Some sections of the stela are damaged making a few passages of the text unreadable.[1][2]
The Famine Stella
The story told on the stela is set in the 18th year of the reign of king Djoser. The text describes how the king is upset and worried, as the land of Egypt has been in the grip of a drought and famine for seven years, during which time the Nile has not flooded the farm lands. The text also describes how the Egyptian people are suffering as a result of the drought and that they are desperate and breaking the laws of the land. Djoser asks the priest staff under the supervision of high lector priest Imhotep for help. The king wants to know where Hapy (a river deity directly identified with the Nile) is born and which god resides at this place.
Imhotep decides to investigate the archives of the temple Hut-Ibety (“House of the nets”), located at Hermopolis and dedicated to the god Thoth. He informs the king that the flooding of the Nile is controlled by the god Khnum at Elephantine from a sacred spring located on the island, where the god resides. Imhotep travels immediately to the location which is called Jebu. In the temple of Khnum, called “Joy of Life”, Imhotep purifies himself, prays to Khnum for help and offers “all good things” to him. Suddenly he falls asleep and in his dream Imhotep is greeted by the kindly looking Khnum. The god introduces himself to Imhotep by describing who and what he is and then describes his own divine powers. At the end of the dream Khnum promises to make the Nile flow again. Imhotep wakes up and writes down everything that took place in his dream. He then returns to Djoser to tell the king what has happened.
The king is pleased with the news and issues a decree in which he orders priests, scribes and workers to restore Khnum´s temple and to once more make regular offerings to the god. In addition, Djoser issues a decree in which he grants the temple of Khnum at Elephantine the region between Aswan and Takompso with all its wealth, as well as a share of all the imports from Nubia.[1][2] Ref:

New generation of Nubians fight for return to homeland

The lives of Nubians were turned upside down 50 years ago when they were evacuated from villages along the Nile River to make way for the High Dam.
Now a younger generation, born in exile, has revived the long-dormant cause, campaigning for a return to their lands and struggling to preserve their culture.
Their timing could not have been worse.
STORY-LINE:
The Nubian village of Gharb Soheil nestles against the River Nile.
It's tranquil location and colourful houses attracts tourists looking to sample the Nubian culture.
But it is not the reality for many Nubians.
Mohammed el-Sheikh walks through the village of Anibah.
The Nubian activist's family was moved here when the High Dam was built.
The 20th century brought a series of displacements, starting with the construction of the first reservoir at Aswan in 1902.
The biggest came with the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1950s and 60s under the rule of the charismatic, authoritarian Gamal Abdel-Nasser.
Some 50,000 people were subjected to forced resettlement in 1963 and 1964, and the creation of Lake Nasser flooded their ancestral homeland.
The Nubian issue is a real predicament that started more than a 100 years ago, since 1898, explains el-Sheikh.
But what we are totally sure about is that it is literally a war against the Nubian identity. We are not claiming things or falsely accusing the Egyptian governments, this is the truth. It is a war on the identity, a war of dispersion and displacement.
When the government resettled the Nubians in the 1960s, it told them they were making a major sacrifice for Egypt's progress, giving up their villages for the sake of a dam that would electrify and modernise the nation.
In return, the authorities promised, the socialist system would ensure them a prosperous future: new homes with electricity, running water and farmlands awaited them.
The Nubians were moved to 44 new villages, mostly clumped around the area of Kom Ombo, north of Aswan, more than 200 kilometres (120 miles) from their home region.
What they found was a startling blow.
In some villages, houses hadn't been built yet - there were just chalk outlines.
Even worse for the Nubians, most of the villages were miles away from the Nile.
The fact that all the new villages bore the same names as the Nubians' now submerged home villages seemed almost cruel.
They became known as the villages of tahgeer, or exile.
For decades now, Nubians have dreamt of returning to their ancestral lands.
Activists were encouraged by the 2011 pro-democracy uprising that overthrew autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
In 2014, there seemed to be a breakthrough when the crafters of a new constitution included a clause that for the first time recognised Nubians as an ethnic group.
It also committed the state to organise their return to traditional lands and develop those areas by 2024.
But so far, nothing concrete has been done, Nubians say.
The country is doing nothing for us, there isn't anything new, says el-Sheikh's sister, Soraya Saleh.
Since the Higrah (forced migration) in 1964 they have been saying that they will get us back, every president comes and says that we will be back but nothing happens.
Nubian activists have started to increase their calls for action from the government.
However, recent peaceful marches have been met by swift suppression from the government of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, which has shown little tolerance for dissent.
It was called the Caravan of Return.
