Greece at Peace (a response to the Greek riots that began 6 Dec 2008)
These are photos I took in Greece while living in Chania (also called Xania). The cities featured in this clip are Athens, Chania and Patras--3 of the cities that have seen rioting in recent days. The riots began in response to the 6 December 2008 shooting death of a teen by a police. As the days have passed, protests have spread to over a dozen cities.
I am no longer living in Greece and welcome any comments, corrections or additions to the story below.
The story:
On Saturday, a 15-year old named Alexandros Grigoropoulos was shot and killed by police in Athens. The policemen involved claim that Grigoropoulos provoked the shooting, but protesters argue that the shooting was unprovoked. Following the death, protests erupted in Athens (Exarcheia district and Syntagma square), Thessaloniki, and Chania.
As time has passed, the riots and protests have become more widespread and include international demonstrations in England, Germany and Cyprus.
The Greek cities that have seen protests (both violent and peaceful) are: Athens, Thessaloniki, Ionnina, Patras, Heraklion, Chania, Rhodes, Corfu, Piraeus, and about a dozen other cities and towns. Some protests are peaceful, but others are riots that including burning of cars, bashing of bank windows, throwing of Molotov cocktails, and other violence.
My hope is that some peace can be found for the country of Greece and for the world. Violence is escalating in Pakistan, the Congo, and other war torn regions of the world. We can only hope and pray for peace during this season of renewed violence.

Baglamas of the Outcasts | Vaggelis Petriniotis
For more videos like this, subscribe on our channel on youtube;
Baglamas is a Greek traditional string musical instrument that came to Greece in the 1900s by immigrants from Asia Minor. Soon, it became the main one to accompany the bouzouki in any music band playing Piraeus-city-style rebetika, a genre that was evolved during some really hard times for Greece (the Greek blues genre, in a sense).
We use mahogany for the instrument’s body, maple wood for its arm, spruce wood for the soundbox’s top, and rosewood for its fretboard. It is worth mentioning here that every kind of wood is carefully chosen for every part of the instrument, taking into account its “musicality” and its durability, but staying close to the instrument’s tradition.
Our premium “Forbidden Baglamas of the Outcasts” is 55 cm in length, 12 cm in width, while its soundbox is 21 x 12 x 8.5 cm. Last, the length of its vibrating strings is 36 cm.

Modern Greeks are direct descendents of the Ancient Greeks
Modern Greeks are direct descendents of the Ancient Greeks
(The greatest victims of Greek lies are the Greeks themselves)
How can a region in the Balkans where modern Greece is located today, which has been open to a multitude of invasions, conquests and settlements, remain homogeneous and untouched for two thousand seven hundred years?
Ironically, as the Greeks claim, how can modern Macedonia, a region neighbouring modern Greece be so heterogeneous that it has completely lost its original identity?
These are questions that every Greek should be asking!
Ever since Philip II of Macedonia conquered the ancient City States at the conclusion of the battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC, the region south of Olympus has been without borders and open to all kinds of invasions and barbarian settlements.
