Selfoss and Dettifoss - Strong waterfalls in Northeast Iceland
Dettifoss is the strongest waterfall in Iceland and in Europe.
The river Jökulsá á Fjöllum where those rivers flow is part of Vatnajökull National Park
The waterfalls were videotaped in 2 consecutive days, one from each bank starting with the west. A flip transition marks the move in between.

Exploring Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls in Northeast Iceland!
During our road trip around the Ring Road in Iceland, we stopped at the spectacular waterfalls of Dettifoss and Selfoss. Join us as we adventure around these magnificent and powerful waterfalls!
Too see our photos, how-to's and recommendations, click the link below:
Where are Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls located?
Dettifoss and Selfoss are located near each other. They are located 78 km/48 mi east of Lake Myvatn and 169 km/105 mi east of Iceland’s “Capital of the North”, Akureyri. They are approximately 25-30 km north of the Ring Road/Route 1.
How do you get to Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?
Both waterfalls can be viewed from the east or west sides of Jokulsa river. To access the east side from the Ring Road/Route 1, turn north onto Road 864. To access the west side from the Ring Road/Route 1, turn north onto Road 862. Note these roads are highly subject to closure. When we visited in June, Road 864 was closed.
Should you visit the east or west side of the river to see Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?
If you have the time and both roads are open, do both. They provide completely different views. Road 864 was closed when we visited so we were unable to view the falls from that side but based on ZigZagOnEarth, from the east side you get a full view of the height of Dettifoss but it is a more difficult hike to Selfoss. From the west side, the hikes to both of the waterfalls are easy. There are many different viewing points at Dettifoss but not as many for Selfoss. This side of the river, allows you to see the entire width of Dettifoss but not the height.
How long does it take to tour Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?
At the west side of the river, we recommend 1-2 hours.
When can you visit Dettifoss and Selfoss Waterfalls?
Year round! Be sure to check the local weather for storms and road closures. The hiking paths get slippery and dangerous when wet!
How big is Dettifoss Waterfall?
Dettifoss Waterfall is 45 meters/148 feet high and 100 meters/328 feet wide. 500 cubic meters/132,086 gallons of water per second plunges over the edge.
How big is Selfoss Waterfall?
Selfoss Waterfall is 11 meters/36 feet high and 366 meters/1,200 feet wide.
How much does it cost?
Free! Parking is free too!
Can you swim in the waterfalls?
Absolutely not! They are way too powerful. Check them out in the video above!
What should you bring on the hike?
Layers, Hiking Shoes, Raincoat / Poncho / Umbrella, Water, Sunscreen, Camera, Hiking poles, if needed
2T2T TIPS
Suggest waterproof/hiking shoes because the hike there is a little rocky and in some areas, you may have to step in water. Iceland weather is ever changing, so wear layers and always bring rain protection.

Godafoss Waterfall | North East Iceland
Godafoss waterfall has long been known as one of the most beautiful sights to be seen in Iceland. Located right off the Ring Road no one should let this alluring beauty pass them by without a visit. The waterfall, which is often nicknamed the waterfall of the gods takes its godly connection from an old Icelandic saga of a man throwing pagan statues into the falls when Icelanders had decided to convert to Christianity.

The Goðafoss (Icelandic: waterfall of the gods or waterfall of the goði) is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. It is located in the Bárðardalur district of North-Central Iceland at the beginning of the Sprengisandur highland road. The water of the river Skjálfandafljót falls from a height of 12 meters over a width of 30 meters. [1]
In the year 999 or 1000 the Lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. After his conversion it is said that upon returning from the Alþingi, Þorgeir threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. Þorgeir's story is preserved in Ari Þorgilsson's Íslendingabók.

Birdingtrail Northeast Iceland - Mývatn
The Mývatn area is well known for its impressive environment and abundant bird life. Nowhere in the world are there more species of duck to be seen in summer. Here and in the neighboring valley Aðaldalur are the only nesting grounds of Barrow's goldeneye in Europe. The common scoter and the gadwall are rare in Iceland outside Þingeyjarsýsla in Northeast Iceland.

Exploring north east Iceland: lakes, volcanoes and waterfalls.
00:01 Mývatn is a lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north east of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents (pseudocraters). The effluent river Laxá is known for its rich fishing for brown trout and Atlantic salmon.
The name of the lake (Icelandic mý (midge) and vatn (lake); the lake of midges) comes from the huge numbers of midges to be found there in the summer.
02:17 Dimmuborgir (dimmu - dark, borgir - cities or forts) is a large area of unusually shaped lava fields east of lake Mývatn. The Dimmuborgir area is composed of various caves and rock formations, remnants of volcanic activity that are perhaps reminiscent of an ancient collapsed citadel, with columns spewing plumes of sulfuric smoke. In Icelandic folklore, Dimmuborgir is said to connect earth with the infernal regions.
07:56 Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The waterfall is formed by the water of the river Skjálfandafljót, it is located in the Mývatn district of north-central Iceland at the beginning of the Sprengisandur highland road.

In the year 1000 the lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. After his conversion it is said that upon returning from the Alþingi, the icelandic parliament, Þorgeir threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall.

Godafoss (Goðafoss) was one of the more famous waterfalls we encountered while driving the Ring Road through the Mývatn District of Iceland's Northeast Region. It’s also part of Golden circle and is included in all Iceland tours. It’s a wide 12m tall waterfall on the Skjálfandafljót River, a mini-Niagara Falls surrounded for miles by nothing. Plus the story behind it is a summary of Iceland's religious history and a great myth.
This curling horseshoe-shaped waterfall had a fairly key role in Icelandic history. Apparently back in the year 1000, the lawspeaker at the time Þorgeirr Ljósvetningagoði had the unenviable task of choosing the official religion of Iceland. Under the pressure of Christianity's convert or die methods, Þorgeirr chucked his icons of Norse deities into the falls (which, by the way, is translated to mean waterfall of the gods) but secretly maintained allegiance to the Norse deities.

Dettifoss Iceland
Dettifoss, located north east Iceland, is supposedly the most powerful waterfall in Europe. This video is a collection from my last three visits there. On no occasion has it failed to impress.
Northeast Iceland - Dettifoss
Dettifoss is a waterfall in Vatnajökull National Park and is reputated to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The falls are 100 metres wide and have a drop of 45 metres down to the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. It is the largest waterfall in Europe in terms of volume discharge, having an average water flow of 193 m3/s.

Dettifoss + Selfoss, Norðurland eystra
6/18/2019
Said to be the most powerful waterfall in Iceland, Dettifoss was obscured by its own mist and spray when I visited it from the west side early in the morning. That, and the rain abused my camera once again. The smaller, gentler Selfoss is only a short walk away.

The Land of Ice & Fire (Part 20 - Víti Crater/Öskjuvatn)
Víti is a geothermal crater lake found in Askja Caldera in the Icelandic Central Highlands. The water in Víti is approximately 25°C, making it a popular location for passing travelers to have a swim whilst surrounded by stunning nature. The blue lake Öskjuvatn is among one of the deepest lakes in Iceland. The area that surrounds Öskjuvatn and Víti is characterized by its jet black sand dunes, providing a striking contrast to the lakes' serene blue shade.
