Selinda Canoe Trail, Botswana
The Selinda Canoe Trail is a 4-day and 3-night adventure along the Selinda Spillway - the waterway linking Botswana's Okavango Delta and Linyanti and Kwando water systems. This is the ideal setting for Botswana's leading canoeing and walking safari, hosting a mere eight guests on each departure. The Trail hearkens back to the spirit of safaris of old, when days were spent on impromptu exploration and each night was spent camping along the banks of a river. Today, this experience can be enjoyed on the Selinda Canoe Trail.
The high rains of the 2009 wet season resulted in epic floodwaters. For the first time in nearly three decades the Selinda Spillway flowed in full, connecting these two ancient waterways. Then, the ample rains of the first half of 2010 and 2011 ensured that the Selinda Spillway continued to flow. The headwaters met again in early May 2010, three months earlier than in 2009, and even earlier the following year in March 2011. 2012 is set to be just as bountiful with earlier departure dates announced.
The Trail begins roughly 45 kilometers downstream from Selinda Camp, northeast of the Okavango Delta. We explore the Selinda Spillway eastward following this meandering route through the 320,000-acre Selinda Reserve. We complete the journey close to the convergence of the Linyanti and Kwando waterways.
The 4 day / 3 night safari consists of a combined two full days and two half-days of relatively easy paddling and three nights in impromptu fly camps along the way. Our stops are not pre-arranged. We begin each day with the break of dawn. Whilst paddling, we encounter wildlife along the Spillway's banks, and disembark our canoes to enjoy walks, looking for tracks and signs. After brunch and a bit of a siesta at midday we continue onward through afternoon and arrive at our campsite before dark.
This area is well known for elephant, buffalo, sable, roan, wild dog and it is possible to encounter predators and a variety of other species en route. The Spillway is also a birding paradise but has relatively few hippos or crocodiles, making for a relaxing journey.
The Selinda Canoe Trail ends at Selinda Camp mid morning on the 4th day, where after you can be transferred to Selinda Reserve airstrip for your connecting charter aircraft. Ideally though one should consider extending your Selinda Reserve experience by staying at either Selinda or Zarafa Camps.

visit:
Just one and a half hours west of Selinda main camp, Selinda Explorers Camp is poised in a remote, treasured location on the famous Selinda Spillway. As the lifeline of the Selinda Reserve, the Selinda Spillway is a crucial gathering point for the wildlife of this pristine 320,000-acre Reserve. The intention of Selinda Explorers Camp is to offer the same quality of wildlife experience, while allowing guests to explore outside of the vehicle, by foot and canoe. This classic camp, consisting of four custom-designed tents, transports us back to authentic safaris, but with a modern twist and hospitality.
Subtly placed under the shade of the riverine forest, the camp is designed in the style of the early explorers both in philosophy and practice. Whiling away afternoons under the canopy of jackelberry and mangosteen trees, interspersed with walks and canoeing, make this a respite from the ‘daily grind’ of a traditional safari. Get out, stretch your legs and feel Africa’s pulse – this is the place for you.
There are few places in northern Botswana as dynamic as the Selinda Reserve. The Selinda Reserve is centred on the famous Selinda Spillway, which flows through the concession from east to west linking the far reaches of the Okavango Delta in the south with the Linyanti systems in the east. It flows into the Zibadianja lagoon, then through the Savute channel and eventually ends at the Savute marsh. Therefore, it has all the advantages of both of those famous areas but with the tremendous advantage of exclusivity. It is a truly spectacular and unique landscape and you are in its core.
In balance with the wild location of this camp (about 45 minutes game drive northwest of Selinda airstrip) the camp is ecologically sensitive with 100% solar power, grey water treatment, bore-hole water for drinking, and activities that concentrate on getting back to nature: guided walking and canoeing a focus, but day and night game drives available exploring the eastern reaches of the Selinda Reserve where there is an extensive networks of tracks. It is wildlife hot spot, with huge herds of elephants and buffalo, lion, wild dog, sable and roan antelope all frequently spotted. On safari it is possible to see a tremendous diversity of species, with particular emphasis on the smaller things only seen outside of a vehicle.
Each of the four custom-designed, walk-in tents is expansive; however, in keeping with a bit of traditional safari, the en-suite flush loo and shower are attached and enclosed, but under the stars. Hot/Cold water are provided by jug on demand. The double-vanity copper vanities and dressing make for spacious accommodation. Stylishly decorated with campaign-style furniture, decanters of cognac and Persian rugs, the décor pays homage to the roots of safari. As a romantic touch, brass hipbaths can be portered to a nearby sand bank on the banks of the Spillway. And personal hammocks adorn each verandah. If you're reading this and the camp looks and sounds familiar, it is. This is, right down to the last teaspoon, Great Plains Conservation's Lukula Camp that was in Tanzania’s Selous Game Reserve, relocated to the Selinda Reserve.
Opened in August 2012, this is a new concept camp for Botswana as it interweaves a wide range of activities. The maximum of eight guests. A separate guide's tent is available for those bringing a private guide. Perfect for small groups and families who take over the camp, or individual or couples traveling, too. Closed December to February. Access via light aircraft to Selinda airstrip.

By popular demand for additional adventure and exploration, the 2014 Selinda Canoe Trail has been extended to four nights. It was discovered, after five successful seasons, that the desire to further explore the islands and lagoons of Selinda Reserve was overwhelming. Our guests consistently asked for an additional night to reach remote areas only accessible by foot. The updated itinerary, for implementation in the 2014 season, extends this sought-after adventure by one day allowing for an even more extraordinary experience.

Selinda Camp - wild paradise
Set in one of the most pristine wilderness areas left on our planet, the Selinda Camp rests on the banks of the eastern Selinda Spillway in northern Botswana’s startlingly beautiful and remote 320,000-acre Selinda Reserve.
Home to some of the largest herds of elephant and buffalo left in Southern Africa, this powerful place is one of the last great bastions of the endangered African wild dog – lycaon pictus – the “painted wolf”.
