Selje kloster - Monastery of Saint Sunniva, Nordfjord, Norway
The Monastery on the small island Selja in western Norway was established by Benedictine monks around 1070 AD. The monastery bloomed in the 14th century, and was not abandoned until early 16th century.
En tur til Selje kloster ytterst i Nordfjord sommeren 2009. Vel verd en tur. Klosterbåten tar bare 15 passasjerer, så det lønner seg å være ute i god tid. Selje turistkontor har info om avgangstider og priser.

The Island of Selja- A Story of Sunniva
The Irish-princess-virgin-martyr, St Sunniva, is one of the most enigmatic of Scandinavian saints. The site of her martyrdom, the island of Selja on the west coast of Norway, became an important monastic and episcopal centre during the eleventh century. Towards the end of the twelfth century her relics were translated to Bergen, the new centre of the bishopric, and she became the patron saint of Bergen. This short film provides an overview of her legend and the historic site at Selja, Norway's holy island.

Seljumannamesse 08 07 2018 - gudstenesta

The first pilgrimage in Norway
On the island of Selja, 15 min. from Selje, lie the ruins of Selja monastery, perhaps the oldest monastery in Norway. The monastery tower is still intact. The monastery was built by Benedictine monks in the early 1100s, in memory of St. Sunniva. You can explore this part of Norwegian history on a guided tour during the summer season.
Selja was in 996 the first pilgrimage in the country when King Olav Tryggvason found relics in a cave on the island.

Salve Regina and Maria Regina Mundi at the Holy Island of Selja, Norway
Selja is the Holy Island where the Church was born in Norway, and it is the oldest pilgrimage site in the country. According to legend, the incorrupt body of St. Sunniva, an irish princess and martyr, was found in the cave at Selja in 997 AD.
Selja is home to the first or second monastery that was built in Norway. The Benedictine monastery was built around 1100 AD, and was a living monastery until the Reformation in 1537. Its location at the most western point of Norway is nothing less than spectacular.
The Benedictines devoted the cave to St. Michael, the arch angel. The author Sigrid Undset rightfully calls it the oldest church roof still standing in Norway.
The prayers that you hear in this video, was sung in the St Michael's cave in October 2015. They were sung in prayer that the Benedictines once again will return to Selja and build a new monastery on Selja - the cradle of the Church in Norway - the Holy Island where miracles still happen.
Salve Regina is a prayer from around 1000 A.D., with a gregorian melody from around 1100 AD. It has most certainly been sung by the monks in this holy cave for hundreds of years.
SALVE REGINA
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiæ,
vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra, salve.
Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevæ,
Ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes
in hac lacrimarum valle.
Eia, ergo, advocata nostra, illos tuos
misericordes oculos ad nos converte;
Et Jesum, benedictum fructum ventris tui,
nobis post hoc exsilium ostende.
O clemens, O pia, O dulcis Virgo Maria.
MARIA REGINA MUNDI
Maria Regina mundi,
Maria Mater Ecclesiæ
Tibi assumus
Tui memores
Vigilamus! Vigilamus!
HAIL MARY
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
