[ÖBB]Semmeringbahn, Semmering Railway
The Semmering Railway is constructed in 1854, which is the first standard track mountain railway of Europe, connecting between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag in Austria. The railway was designed by Carl Ritter von Ghega, attempting harmonious combination of technology and nature. UNESCO certified this railway as World Heritage in 1998.
Semmeringbahn: How Austria Got Trains Over The Alps Before Cars Were Even Invented
In 1848, Napoléon comes to power in France, the US is at war with Mexico, and Austria looks at the recently-invented steam train and says I reckon we could get one of these things over the Alps. Today I am exploring the stunning result, the Semmeringbahn - built before anyone had even invented a train capable of running on it. It is the world's first standard-gauge mountain railway, an incredible piece of engineering history, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Semmering Railway - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Semmering Railway is one of the world's first true mountain railways, and runs about 40 kilometres between Gloggnitz and Murzzuschlag. Incredibly, for a mountain railway built in the 1840s, it's still largely in use today, with its fascinating mix of curved viaducts, iron bridges, tunnels and covered galleries. We used the modern train to journey between Graz and Vienna, though unfortunately it was difficult to actually see the engineering from on the train itself.

Driver’s Eye View of Austria’s legendary “Semmering Railway” – Payerbach to to Mürzzuschlag
Enjoy the view normally reserved for the driver as we travel over the first mountain railway in Europe to employ standard gauge track. The railway was constructed between 1848 and 1854 by some 20,000 workers featuring 14 tunnels (among them the 1,431 m summit tunnel), 16 viaducts (several two-storey), along with numerous attractive stone bridges. Our train has to tackle 2.5% gradients and negotiate curves as tight as 190m radius, a real challenge for any train. The railway is so remarkable that it has been added to the list of the UNESCO World Heritage sites. Please sit back and join me for a ride over this highly scenic Alpine railway.
The tour was organised by the Railway Touring Company - Track gauge 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) - Filmed September 2019

Semmering (Austria) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Semmering in Austria.
The Semmering Railroad is a remarkable alpine railway line that has been operating in Austria for a hundred and fifty years.Construction of a railroad across mountain terrain posed a major problem but the Semmering Mountain Railway that embarked from Payerbach overcame all obstacles. One of the most impressive architectural achievements of the railroad is the two hundred and twenty seven metre long and twenty four metre high Schwarza Viaduct. The railway line to the Semmering Pass contains sixteen viaducts, more than a hundred bridges and fifteen tunnels. A huge quantity of manpower was used to create it with twenty thousand workers engaged to complete the daunting task. However, the line was inaugurated after only six years of construction. Steam trains were eventually replaced by electric trains but the railway itself has hardly changed at all and continues to form part of a fascinating and irresistible combination of both technology and Nature.

Semmering Railway (UNESCO/NHK)
The Semmering Railway, built over 41 km of high mountains between 1848 and 1854, is one of the greatest feats of civil engineering from this pioneering phase of railway building. The high standard of the tunnels, viaducts and other works has ensured the continuous use of the line up to the present day. It runs through a spectacular mountain landscape and there are many fine buildings designed for leisure activities along the way, built when ...

Austria's Scenic Semmering Railway, Mürzzuschlag Railway Museum & New Tunnel Works Site
A visit to the Semmering Railway is much more than a train ride along a beautiful, historically important UNESCO recognized alpine route. The opportunity to cover the line whilst it is still an important, busy, trunk line in a train old enough to have opening windows will soon pass, when the new base tunnel opens and all trains will be comfortable, air conditioned bubbles fitted with glazing that challenges even the most competent photographer to achieve a decent result. For anyone considering making this trip, now is the time to do it. At Mürzzuschlag there is a fascinating railway museum covering the history of Austria’s Southern Railway along with a viewing tower that currently offers excellent views of the station and Tunnel construction site. It is also worth visiting Semmering station with its small exhibition, plinthed ÖBB 5144 001-4 Motorkocsi Rail car and plenty of action on the main line. Payerbach-Reichenau Station has a small outdoor historic display including former steam banking locomotive ÖBB 95.112. A short walk from the station is the Höllentalbahn, a quaint narrow gauge (760 mm) electric railway, running from the (ÖBB) station for approximately five kilometres through the market town of Reichenau an der Rax to Hirschwang.
