The Senate Square and its surroundings form a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture. The Senate Square presents Carl Ludvig Engel’s (1778-1840) architecture. There are four main buildings designed by him - Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland. A statue of Alexander II (1894) stands in the middle of the Senate Square.

Video taken on a recent Baltic cruise. A statue of Emperor Alexander II is located in the center of the square. The statue, erected in 1894, was built to commemorate his re-establishment of the Diet of Finland in 1863 as well as his initiation of several reforms that increased Finland's autonomy from Russia.

The Senate Square and its surroundings form a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture. The square is dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel between 1822 and 1852: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland. A statue of Alexander II (1894) stands in the middle of the Senate Square. Helsinki Cathedral is arguably Finland's most famous and photographed building; it celebrates its 165th anniversary in 2017. The oldest stone building in Helsinki is the Sederholm House located on the southeast corner of the square. Today the building hosts the Helsinki City Museum. The Esplanade park and the Market Square are just a block away.

Senate Square and its surroundings make up the oldest part of central Helsinki. Landmarks and famous buildings surrounding the square are the Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, main building of the University of Helsinki, and Sederholm House (Finnish: Sederholmin talo), the oldest building of central Helsinki dating from 1757.

These scenes give you a short insight into Helsinki's daily life at the world famous Senate Square. By the way, do you know the Finnish Dance/Techno Artist 'Darude'? - His worldwide smash hit 'Sandstorm' was shot, among other corners, on the stairs of the Helsinki Cathedral at the Senate Square right there in Helsinki. Crazy! Beautiful piece of art!
While I was at that area, I was lucky to observe a funny event - a huge crowd of half-naked Finnish students celebrating their semester ending at university. The square was full of party atmosphere, noisy and mess.
Afterward I had a look inside the Helsinki Cathedral - quite cool in comparison to German churches. Finnish churches seem to be down to earth and fully secular without any overrated jewelry rubbish. Another must see place is the fantastic church in the rock - it's just like a cool cave with great lightning of the sun inside the room.
