Sendai Castle, also known as Aoba Castle, was constructed in 1601. Currently, the remains of the castle serve as a park. The first lord of the Sendai clan, Masamune Date, is represented with his statue of him on horseback from where visitors can get a panoramic view of the city of Sendai. You can also view the restored maps of the castle along with precious historical information through CG at the Aoba Castle Museum.

Aoba Castle is located on a plateau overlooking the city of Sendai on the opposing bank of the Hirose River. The site is protected by cliffs to the south and east, and by a deep forest to the west. The site of Aoba Castle, a small hill called “Mount Aoba” was the site of a fortified residence of a branch of the Shimazu clan, the nominal kokushi of Mutsu Province from the early Kamakura period. In the Muromachi period, it was controlled by the Ji-samurai Kokubun clan, which was in turn destroyed by the Date clan.

Aoba Castle was built in 1602 by Date Masamune the legendary one eyed Dragon whose equestrian statue in the castle grounds is an Iconic Symbol of the City.

We finally made it Sendai, the first major city on our journey to Hokkaido. We visit the resting place of Date Masamune and try the local dish, Gyu-Tan (beef tongue).

Sendai-jo is a castle that is located in Sendai city in the Miyagi prefecture.
Date Masamune built it on Aobayama in 1601, therefore it is commonly known as Aoba-jo. It is made of a stone wall and has been repaired many times over the centuries. There is an audience hall which is called as hon-maru wherepolitical decisions were made and formal ceremonies were held. There is also the statue of the legendary Masamune on horseback.

【4K】Walking to Sendai castle(!?!?) and Sendai station
Not a vlog, no intrusive faces or talking, pure Japan only.
After the ferry to cats island was cancelled, I went to Sendai. I hoped to visit the Sendai castle. Well, it was marked as Sendai castle on the map and road signs also were telling about Sendai castle. But...
After that I went to Sendai station. On the way to the... castle I heard some music, I found the source, that was Yosakoi festival in West park, but I got there too late. I also found nice market street which brought me directly to the station.

Although hardly anything remains of Sendai Castle itself its location high up above the city provides extensive views for many miles. It's also very peaceful, with only the crows cawing in the background, so is well worth a visit.

Exploring Sendai // Zuihoden Mausoleum & Aoba Castle
Last week was Culture Day (文化の日 Bunka no Hi), so we had a day off! We took a bus to Sendai, a city about 2 hours north of us. We did a little bit of exploring & thought we'd share our day with you!
