102. Tosho-gu Shrine, Sendai, Japan. When you ask someone in Japan about Toshogu Shrine, you will probably first be directed to a famous shrine in Nikko, Tochigi prefecture. However, there are actually Toshogu shrines throughout Japan, and a lovely one right here in Sendai! A Toshogu Shinto shrine can be any shrine established for the purpose of enshrining the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu, once the supreme ruler of Japan and creator of the Tokugawa shogunate (feudal government). Just a quick transfer at JR Sendai station to JR Toshogu station leads you to Sendai's Toshogu Shrine. Sendai was founded by Lord Date Masamune several hundred years ago. His clan and succession of 13 lords ruled the north and protected it against invasions from the south during the warring period. The second son of Masamune, Date Tadamune is responsible for building Sendai's Toshogu Shrine during his rule from 1600-1658. Although the real life Tokugawa Ieyasu had long since passed before Tadamune was even born, Ieyasu's spirit still guided the clan. To honor their guardian deity, a magnificent shrine was constructed.

Bike ride to Tosho-gu Shrine, Toshogu, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan. It's my bicycle trip to Tosho-gu Shrine in Sendai City. I'm almost there. I'm a little tired, because Tosho-gu Shrine lies on the other side of town, and the day is hot, but I'm happy because I wanted to visit this place since few weeks. Even the railway crossing, then about 200 meters and climbing uphill. But it's the finish. As you can see on the trees - the wind is strong, but it soon will change, on my way back I will have it against me again. I reached the top. It was not easy, but I'm on the spot. Tosho-gu Shrine, Sendai, Japan. Date Tadamune, the 2nd feudal lord, built this venerable shrine with permission from Tokugawa Iemitsu, the 3rd Tokugawa Shogun. It enshrines the spirit of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the Date clan's guardian deity. It was an enormous project into which the clan poured all its might and this sublime shrine with its solid yet delicate details displays the very essence of Date culture.

Samurai daimyō ritual service in Sendai
Lord and founder of Sendai Date Masamune was a powerful daimyō in northern Japan in the time of swords and samurai. A top vassal of Shōgun Tokugawa, he lived and ruled 400 years ago.
That part of Japan's history has now passed, but still his decendants and those of his warriors gather in ceremony at Masamune's tomb (Zuihōden) at the coming of the new year.

On September 22, 2016, Rakuma held its first offline event, the Rakuma Flea Market, at the Rakuten Eagles' home, Rakuten Kobo Stadium Miyagi, in Sendai. The event managed to attract over 6,000 people, with around 200 stalls set up. Rakuma decided to hold an offline flea market as a way to spread awareness of its online flea market app, and increase the number of new active app users. Participants could also encounter other Rakuten services at the venue, in the form of food stands of Rakuten Ichiba merchants, and booths of Rakuten Travel, Rakuten Dining and RAKUTEN SHOWTIME among others. Sakura in Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan. The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and holds a very prominent position in Japanese culture. There are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan, most of which bloom for just a couple of days in spring. The Japanese celebrate that time of the year with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees.

Video Podcast 25- Rinnoji Temple Garden, Sendai
A beautiful, serene garden near Sendai. I've been meaning to upload this for quite a while. Despite the video perhaps being relatively poor quality and only 480p, I think this is the best footage I've ever captured of a Japanese garden. Video can show it's dynamic, living qualities in a way photography can only dream of doing.
Hopefully, with the advent of 1080p capture and beyond, such subjects can be taken more seriously by more people than ever before.
