Seneca Rocks & Seneca Shadows Campground
I just spent a couple days at Seneca Shadows Campground in Seneca Rocks, WV. Definitely a wilderness in the West Virginia Appalachian Mountains. There are a lot of activities in the region such as rock climbing, hiking, kayaking. Be aware that there is NO cell service but, there is wifi and the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center. The wifi signal is pretty strong inside certain areas of the building but all but nonexistent outside.
According to the Forest Service website, the hardness of the Tuscarora sandstone formation, and the degree of climbing difficulty, Seneca Rocks offers rock climbers a unique opportunity found nowhere else in the east. There are over 375 major mapped climbing routes, varying in degree from the easiest (5.0) to the most difficult (5.12). Only trained and experienced rock climbers should attempt to scale the rocks. There are two climbing schools located in the communities of Seneca Rocks and nearby Riverton who train prospective climbers in beginning and advanced rock climbing. The school in Riverton also offers a climbers rescue course.

Jeeping in WV. Seneca Rocks. Spruce Knob. Cruising the Greenbrier River
We start the video in the Island Run campground, where I spend one night along the East Fork of the Greenbrier River.
The next day, we head up Middle Mountain all the way to Spruce Knob. There, we take a quick hike and enjoy the many panoramic views over looking the Monongahela Forest.
We end up setting up camp at the Seneca Rocks Campground and get right on the trail to the top. A quick 1.9 mile hike and numerous switchbacks, and we are at the top, enjoying a 360 degree view of the mountains.
Back at camp we enjoy a quiet evening, good meal, and a hot shower. It was a great trip and I am happy to share it with you.

Bizarro author Rich Bottles Jr. blows the coffin lid off horror genre clichés with this tour de force cast of Eco-friendly vampires, beach-yearning zombies and sex-starved she-devils.

Allegheny and Shenandoah Overland Trail
This 700 mile route takes you to George Washington National Forest, Flagpole Knob, Reddish Knob, Lake Moomaw, Monongahela National Forest, Canaan Loop, Dolly Sods, and Green Ridge State Forest. This route can be completed by most stock 4x4s with good AT tires. Expect pin-striping, mud, dust, and water crossings. It is recommended that parties be equipped for self-recovery and travel with at least one other vehicle.

I made the trip alone in my '94 Toyota 4Runner. This was my first real trip overland, and I had a lot to prove. Could I even do it? Had to make some detours and changes along the way as some areas were still closed for the winter. Totally missed Dolly Sods, but will not miss it next time! Suffered a frozen caliper on the way there, but overcame it with a bit of luck and a friend's generous help. The rest of the trip went great. A lot was learned about the man and the machine. I put the mountains in my rear view, but they will remain forever in my soul.

View of Seneca Rocks, Wv 8-25-15
Seneca Rocks is a massive quartzite crag that rises 900 feet above the North Branch of the Potomac River and is located within the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks Recreation Area, of the Monongahela National Forest, Pendleton County, West Virginia.Technical climbing gear must be used to summit the crag, making it the only true peak in the Eastern United States. There is a hiking trail that leads to the beginning of the rock face-- it's way up there, lots of switchbacks. I hiked the overlook trail in 2006, there are some pretty good views from the top. Here is some extra reading material for you if you're bored: and Thanks for watching!

Seneca Creek, WV: Tenkara Fly Fishing
Here I am fishing Seneca Creek, WV, in late September with my Tenkara fly rod. This is a Trout Unlimited top 100 trout stream. This time of year the water gets low and the fish are very spooky. They say the best fishing starts 2 miles above the trail head but I recommend 3. There is a good trail that parallels the creek and I didn't see another fisherman this day.

Backpacking Spruce Knob and Seneca Creek Backcountry, West Virginia
I recently completed an overnight solo backpacking trek through the Seneca Creek Backcountry area located on Spruce Mountain in the Monongahela National Forest, Pendleton County, West Virginia. The hike begins near the summit of Spruce Knob, West Virginia's highest point, and follows along the ridge for several miles before descending the west slope of the mountain to Seneca Creek. I then hiked along the creek for a few miles until reaching the Upper Falls of Seneca, sometimes called the High Falls of Seneca (there is another Seneca Falls further downstream). After eating lunch and taking a break at the falls, it was time to head back up the mountain, passing through the beautiful High Meadows area and checking out the crash site of a small aircraft. I then stopped for dinner and then looked for a good camp site for the night. On the morning of Day 2, I continued the hike along the ridge of the mountain back to the trail head at the summit.

Annabel checks out Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis, West Virginia over Labor Day 2016, where she stayed in the lodge and visited 5 waterfalls in 2 days. Here's the second installment of her report on every chute that makes up Elakala Falls, the most challenging hike she ever took, with 4 falls along the route and all progressively harder to reach.

Germany Valley Rd
Germany Valley Road leads from Riverton WV to Seneca Caverns. This is in the Seneca Rocks area. Germany Valley Rd continues on past the caverns, but is not as wide or well maintained. Although this portion of the road leads past areas of the Monongahela National Forest, there are not any marked forest roads off the county route. The road ends close to Seneca Rocks at the old 4U Motel. All of the route is paved and suitable for all passenger vehicles, however the section between Riverton and the caverns is recommended as a route to the caverns even if approaching from Seneca Rocks.
