► Senganen is a Japanese landscape garden located by the coast north of downtown Kagoshima. One of the garden's most striking features, is its use of the Sakurajima volcano as borrowed scenery.

The garden includes small ponds, streams, bonsai trees, shrines, a teahouse and a bamboo grove. Everything you'd expect from a traditional Japanese garden, and more.

Senganen Garden can be reached in just 30 minutes by bus from Kagoshima City, and the price is just 190Yen. Admission fee to the garden is 1000Yen. However, you can watch this video for free! :-p

How'd you like a seaside home with a bay and a live volcano for the scenery? Senganen was the home, garden and factory for the Shimazu clan, one of the most powerful in Kyushu and greatly influential in Japan's history and modernization. In addition to the view and beautiful gardens is a museum, for an extra price there's a tour of the home as it was in the 1890s.
Senganen a.k.a. Isoteien (仙巌園, 磯庭園) is one of the must-see places in Kagoshima City, in addition to Sakurajima.

Sengan-en Garden (仙巌園), also known as Isoteien (磯庭園), is a Japanese style landscape garden along the coast north of downtown Kagoshima.Tthe use of Sakurajima and Kagoshima Bay bring amazing landscape as borrowed scenery is one of the garden’s most striking feature. The garden also includes small ponds, streams, shrines and a bamboo grove.
Sengan-en was built in 1658 by the wealthy Shimazu Clan, one of the most powerful feudal clans during the Edo Period (1603-1867). The Shimazu ruled the Satsuma domain (today Kagoshima) for almost 700 years until the end of the feudal age in 1868. They continued to be influential into the modern era as some of the earliest adopters of Western science and technology.

At the center of the garden stands the Iso Residence. The residence was originally constructed in 1658 along with the rest of the garden, but the current building mostly dates back to a rebuild of the mid 1880s. The Iso Residence became the main residence of the Shimazu family after the end of the feudal age, and its rooms are preserved in the way they were used in the 1890s. The inside of the residence can only be seen on a paid tour that includes tea and a snack at the end.
Sengan-en has a variety of trees and plants that make the garden scenery amusing in all four seasons. There are a number of cherry trees, especially of the early flowering kanhizakura variety, which open as early as late January. Other cherry tree varieties give flowers through mid April.

Outside the main garden area, but included in the admission price, stands a long stone building that used to serve as one of the earliest Western style machinery factories in Japan. Today it houses the Shoko Shusei-kan Museum with exhibits about the culture and maritime activities of the Shimizu Clan and the early factory and machines which contributed toward Japan's modernization in the 1800s.

Sengan-en can be reached by the Kagoshima City View bus to Senganen -mae bus stop (every 30 minutes, 190 yen per ride. A 1 day pass available for 600 yen.). The bus can be boarded at Kagoshima Chuo Station, the Shiroyama Observatory, Kagoshima Aquarium and some other tourist spots.

Visiting the House of a EDO FEUDAL LORD in Kagoshima, Japan

We travel to Kagoshima and visit the famous Senganen Garden, built by the wealthy Shimazu Clan, one of the most powerful feudal clans during the Edo Period. This is an absolute MUST VISIT! We enjoyed the beautiful Japanese gardens, tasted Kagoshima sweet treats and removed our shoes to stroll inside the feudal lord's home (no biggie!).

And of course we couldn't end the day without some delicious black pork ramen.

Family time at the Sengan'en Gardens (仙巌園）

The last time we were in Senganen gardens, it was flushed with Cherry blossoms in March (for our daughter's birthday). This time, we went in the beginning of the year because for the first 3 days in January, persons wearing kimonos enter for free and we wanted to see lovely kimonos. It is becoming quite rare to see regular persons walking in kimonos. But, of course, I can understand why.

Hope you enjoyed this video and found it somewhat helpful. We also got to visit the museum next door called Shoko shuseikan museum. But filming is strictly prohibited.

Sengan-en Garten (仙巌園), auch als Isoteien bekannt (磯庭園), ist ein japanischer Stil Landschaft Garten entlang der Küste nördlich der Innenstadt Kagoshima . Der Garten umfasst auch kleine Teiche, Bäche, Schreine und einen Bambushain. Die Residenz von Sengan-en wurde 1658 von Shimazu Mitsuhisa ( 島 津 光 久 ) erbaut.Die Gärten bieten den Blick auf Sakurajima über die Kagoshima-Bucht.
Seit mehr als 50 Jahren ist das jährliche Chrysanthemum-Festival in Sengan-en wegen seiner poetischen Darstellung der Herbstsaison in Kagoshma ein lokaler Besuch-Favorit. 
Etwa fünfzehntausend wunderschöne Chrysanthemen schmücken das Gelände während des Festivals.
