Japan Trip: A Popular Tourist Spot in Shirahama, Senjojiki, Wakayama 25
Senjojiki, a famous rock formation, is located along the coast of Wakayama Prefecture, in the Shirahama region. Shirahama is famous for its hot spring (one of the top three onsen resorts in Japan) as well as its nature. This area has many natural wonders, caves, beaches and rock formations for visitors to explore.
Senjojiki literally translates to “one thousand tatami mats”. This tiered rock formation has the appearance of flat, sheet-like rocks. Visitors are allowed to walk on Senjojiki, examining the natural carvings on the rocks from the waves of the Pacific Ocean. The sunset viewed from Senjojiki is said to be very beautiful.

Just offshore, Engetsuto Island has a rocky, sunset-framing arch. The Adventure World amusement park has a roller coaster and animal exhibits. Nearby Senjojiki is a rock formation said to look like traditional tatami mats. Farther south, the Sandan-beki cliffs stretch along the coast. I hope you enjoyed my video I will be going back one day haha.

Japan Travel: Togakushi Shrine feel spritual energy, Nagano31 Moopon
Japan Travel: Togakushi Shrine feel spritual energy, Nagano31 Moopon
Togakushi Shrine ( Togakushi Jinja) consists of a lower, a middle and an upper shrine in the woody mountains northwest of Nagano's city center. The shrines are related to an important story in Japanese mythology in which the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave in present day Takachiho in Kyushu after her brother had misbehaved, as a result, bringing darkness to the world.
In order to get the sunlight back, the other deities tried to coax the Sun Goddess out of the cave by performing spectacular dance performances in front of it. As the Sun Goddess took a peek out, one of the deities grabbed the cave's stone door and threw it away not to allow her to hide again. The stone door flew all the way to Togakushi in Nagano Prefecture, which is also how the area got its name: Togakushi literally means hiding door.
Today, the upper shrine worships the deity who grabbed and threw away the stone door, while the middle shrine enshrines the deity who performed the dance in front of the cave. The shrines of Togakushi are connected both by roads and hiking trails up the mountain's forested slopes. Visitors would first arrive at the torii gate of the lower shrine, from which is a long flight of stairs leading up to its praying hall. A two kilometer ascent from here takes you to the middle shrine, which stands at the top of a small town of shops and restaurants. The shrine features a praying hall with nice architecture, a small waterfall, and sacred trees which are over 800 years old.
The entrance to the upper shrine is another two kilometers uphill from the middle shrine. From the parking lot and bus stop starts the two kilometer long approach to the shrine, which is lined by over 300 tall cryptomeria trees, passes the thatched-roof Zuishinmon Gate along the way, and ends with a series of stone steps. The shrine's main hall spectacularly stands in the steep mountainside of Mount Togakushi with the mountain peaks towering above.
An alternative trail to the upper shrine leads via Kagamiike (Mirror Pond), a serene pond which reflects the surrounding mountain landscape nicely. Note also that the Togakure Ninpo Museum is situated right next to the entrance to the upper shrine, while the Kids Ninja Village is close in the vicinity of the middle shrine, making interesting additions to the shrine visits.
Access info.
Take bus number 70 or 71 from Nagano Station in direction of Togakushi. Alight at Togakushi-Hokosha for the lower shrine (戸隠宝光社, 50 minutes, 1150 yen one way), Togakushi-Chusha for the middle shrine (戸隠中社, 60 minutes, 1250 yen one way) or Togakushi-Okushairiguchi for the upper shrine (戸隠奥社入口, 65 minutes, 1350 yen one way). There is roughly one bus per hour. Take advantage of a discounted round trip tickets between Nagano and Togakushi-Hokosha (2100 yen) and between Nagano and Togakushi-Chusha (2250 yen).
In addition, the Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu travel ticket is available for 2600 yen and includes a) a round trip between central Nagano and the Togakushi area, b) free use of buses within Togakushi, and c) one additional bus ride between Nagano Station and Zenkoji. (VI)和歌山・白浜町・千畳敷 / (VI)Wakayama - Shirahama Town - Senjojiki
Senjojiki Coast in Izu Peninsula
Senjojiki (Thousand Tatami Mats) is a rocky coast in Izu Peninsula. It takes 3.5 hours by car. Also accessible by train and bus (*JR line from Tokyo station to Simoda station and 2 busses, but not so many busses.. You may have to hitchhike if you miss the busses.).
It's like a hidden place and you have to walk 40 mins from the nearest town Iruma where cars can be parked. It was a quarry for stones and was used for construction of the Odawara Castle's moat. Very nice sight!
*For using drones*
Japan has drone laws and strict regulations. The area drones are allowed to fly is limited. I used my drone in line with the regulations and relevant laws. I also contacted to Minami-Izu Cho town office (16 May 2019) for additional confirmation and permission.
