African Safari Vlog EP 01 | Game Drive in Windhoek, Namibia | | What is Game Drive? Tanya Khanijow
WELCOME TO NAMIBIA! Namibia is one of the most amazing countries I have ever been to. And I had one day in Windhoek before the start of a crazy travel, driving, camping adventure, to get a good sense of the place. So here's a vlog from day 1! Just 10 more days of camping to go XD
Some additional info:
- Namibia's currency is called Namibian dollars or N$
- N$1 = 4.73 INR
- The local sim is from a company called MTC and if you get an Aweh bundle, the internet is pretty cheap. The total combination cost me N$200 whereas just 3GB recharge costs N$65
- I use an international debit card and credit card both while travelling. But I use a debit card to withdraw money.
- The cab that I'm using in the video is managed by wildplanets.com
- The whole experience is in collaboration with Wild Planets, which is a not for profit company. They contribute most of their earnings from Tourism towards the development of Africa. So, if you're planning to travel to Africa, do give them a holler.
- Mr. Munshi is the founder of Wild Planets and on this trip I had the good fortune of finding out first hand from him about Namibia. Wild Planets will launch their tours in Namibia in 2020.

Himba Tribal Women & their lifestyle .. I'm Moved! Namibia Vlog EP04 | Opuwo | Tanya Khanijow
WELCOME TO NAMIBIA! The Himba Tribe is one of the most prominent and fascinating tribes of Namibia, known the world over for preserving their unique cultural identity and age-old traditions for living in a low-water ecosystem. During my road trip across Namibia, I took a little detour to go meet the Himba Tribals in an attempt to understand their lifestyle a little better. This is my way of documenting the experience for the purpose of education about a different culture.
WARNING: The Himba ladies are known culturally to have bare exposed chests as part of their attire. While I didn't wish to shock or disrespect my viewers, I do hope they view this video entirely from the perspective of education about a different kind of lifestyle. The dressing sense of the Himba women is in no way a sexual depiction of nudity as it is pretty culturally accepted in their vicinity. Hence I chose to leave the video as it is without blurring any bits. As part of my creator responsibility, I have demonetized this video.

Namibia is a place that you either love or hate. It is such an arid landscape and its features are punctuated by the enormity of its emptiness. I’ve had the privilege of spending months at a time discovering its landscapes and am completely awestruck at how I have barely scratched the surface of what there is to explore.
In particular, the Erongo Mountain region of Namibia is close to my heart. While at a crossroads in my life, deciding what will be my next step, I spent a month alone on a farm named Ameib “The Green Place” where my interest in photography became passion.
During this time of change, I spent my days enchanted by the natural beauty and the immensity of the landscape. With its monolithic granite outcrops and ever-expanding undulations, that highlighted my own insignificance. This sense of perspective had a strangely calming effect on me. There is humility in being in a natural world that is indifferent to your presence. Your anthropocentric axioms of comfort fall away and all you are left with is, what is. Your awareness becomes more in tune with your surroundings.
In the time since then, I’ve returned to Ameib several times and have attempted to capture it during the changing seasons. In December 2016, I was there during the peak of the drought and on my last day, witnessed the first of the rains to come. Subsequently, I returned in April 2017 to see the change after the late rains.
Out of that transformation came a short film, which I’ve named “A Glimpse of Ameib” because that is all that it is, a glimpse. To attempt to share the essence of such an incredible place is no small task. To say that I have done the farm justice would be an overestimate of both my ability and what is possible in a few minutes. All I can hope is that I managed to give a taste of why it is such a special place to me.

Exploring Namibias Spectacular Caprivi Strip
Exploring Namibia's Spectacular Caprivi Strip
1 of 9
Unique Caprivi
Extending from the northeast corner of Namibia like an alien limb, the Caprivi Strip feels as far removed from the rest of the country as it looks on the map. Four of Southern Africa’s most impressive rivers (the Kavango, the Chobe, the Zambezi and the Cuando) run through the region at various points, transforming the Caprivi into a lush green oasis. Namibia may be most famous for the ochre dunes of Sossusvlei, or for the arid valleys and granite koppies of Damaraland, but it is in the verdant heart of the Caprivi that the country’s beauty is most tangible.
2 of 9
Life on the River
Here, life revolves around the water. The bustling town of Rundu lies along the banks of the Kavango River, and constitutes the westernmost gateway to the Caprivi. Nearby, several lodges offering varying degrees of luxury provide an insight into the lives of the local people, for whom the Kavango is an essential resource. At Hakusembe River Lodge, one can watch from the restaurant’s sun-drenched deck as residents of the Angolan villages on the opposite bank come down to the water to fish, bathe, wash their clothes and water their multicolored herds of Nguni cattle.
3 of 9
A Green Oasis
Further into the Caprivi, several lodges run tours that take visitors into the local settlements, allowing them to experience Caprivian culture for themselves. The abundance of water in a country otherwise plagued by drought also serves to make the region a hotspot for eco-tourists, with several game parks offering a greener alternative to the famous (yet often waterless) plains of more southerly Etosha National Park.
4 of 9
Incredible Wildlife
Thanks to their ability to sustain a greater variety of life, parks like Mahango yield different sightings to those further south. Here, it is possible to spot rare antelope species including the red lechwe, the tsessebe and the sitatunga. Great herds of African elephant play frivolously in the shallows, transforming water into curtains of falling diamonds as they spray it into the air and across their dark gray backs.
5 of 9
A Birder's Paradise
In particular, the Caprivi is known for its birdlife. Its riverine habitats support over 500 resident and migratory species, including some area specials that are typically found only in the Caprivi and Okavango regions. Amongst these are the coppery-tailed coucal, the slaty egret and the brown firefinch; while birding trips like those offered at Nunda River Lodge offer the opportunity to see the magnificent African skimmer up close and personal.
6 of 9
Off the Beaten Track
Above all, the Caprivi is worth visiting for its innate sense of adventure. Conflict, both during colonial times and more recently, defines the region’s history, thanks to its strategic importance in providing access from Namibia to the mighty Zambezi River. Between 2000 and 2002, unrest in bordering Angola meant that tourists could only traverse the Caprivi as part of a military convoy. Today, the region is considered stable, and a sense of peace has descended upon its idyllic waterways.
7 of 9
The Magic of the Wild
It’s a feeling that starts to seep into the bloodstream as soon as the tourist vehicles that overrun southern Namibia are replaced by local taxis on the road northwards. It’s the expansion of the soul that comes with the soft glimmer of sunset on the still waters of the Chobe River; or with the explosion of stars across a sky untainted by light pollution. Despite the Caprivi’s wildness, it remains surprisingly accessible.
8 of 9
When to Visit
In terms of season, the best time to go depends on what one wants from a visit to the Caprivi. Weather-wise, the southern hemisphere winter (June - August) offers cooler temperatures and drier days, while the rainy summer months (November - January) are best for birding. Game-viewing is at its best in September and October, when the lack of water elsewhere forces wildlife to flock to the rivers for survival.
9 of 9
Staying Safe
It is important to note that malaria is a problem throughout the Caprivi region, especially during the summer months when precautions should be taken to avoid infection. However, don’t let the practical side of preparing for a trip to Africa’s wild side put you off. After all, it’s this wildness that makes the Caprivi so special and ensures that whatever time of year you choose to visit, you’ll be glad that you did

Dertour Welcoming Evening - Hosted by Gondwana Collection Namibia
One hundred staffers of German tour operator DERTOUR visited Namibia for a first-hand experience of African flair and the Namibia feeling. The Gondwana Collection hosted a welcome evening for them on Friday (31 January 2014) in its own shebeen at the Windhoek head office, and the travel agents enjoyed the event to the fullest.
DERTOUR's Director for Africa, Petra Fraatz, thanked the sponsors of the Country Special -- the Namibia Tourism Board, Air Namibia, the Gondwana Collection, Safari Court Hotel and especially Sense of Africa as the organiser on site -- for their generous support and hospitality. She ended her speech with the line Namibia is definitely worth a visit to the enthusiastic applause of the DERTOUR travel agents.
Split into five groups, the DERTOUR staffers travelled through Namibia for several days on different routes. Group 1, for example, first visited Kalahari Anib Lodge on the fringe of the Kalahari, followed by Namib Desert Lodge at the foot of the fossilised dunes of the Namib, Damara Mopane Lodge near Khorixas in Damaraland and Etosha Safari Camp. There were also viewings at other lodges and they stopped at various sights. The group was unanimous that Etosha was the highlight of their trip: We watched a pride of five lions take a giraffe. Right in front of our eyes, at the parking site!
Now the travel agents are able to share first-hand experiences with clients and thus sell the travel destination Namibia in a more authentic and enthusiastic way. According to the NTB, bookings to Namibia rose by some 30 percent after the two previous DERTOUR Country Specials in Namibia, which took place in 2006 and 2009.
A Conservation Story - The Zambezi Classic

About This Episode:
39 teams, consisting of 105 anglers, participated in the 20th Zambezi Classic International angling competition near Katima Mulilo in the north-eastern corner of Namibia from 28 to 31 August this year. Anglers from all over Namibia, Zambia, Botswana and Australia came to participate. The event was organised by the Nwanyi Angling Club, which is situated on the mighty Zambezi River near the Zambezi Mubala Camp.
“Without the many sponsors, we would not have been able to stage the competition,” said Johan van Vuuren, chairman of the club. The three main sponsors were ESBboats Mercury, Namibia Breweries and Gondwana Collection Namibia.
Conservation is a cornerstone of the Namibian experience.
Namibia was the first African country to incorporate protection of the environment into its constitution, and the government has reinforced this by giving its communities the opportunity and rights to manage their wildlife through communal conservancies.
Today, over 43% of Namibia's surface area is under conservation management. This includes national parks and reserves, communal and commercial conservancies, community forests, and private nature reserves.
After Independence in 1990, visionary conservationists in the field and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism enacted policy changes that allowed rural communities to benefit from wildlife by forming conservancies. In 1998, the first four conservancies were registered.
Today, more than 70 registered conservancies embrace one in four rural Namibians. A sense of ownership over wildlife and other resources is encouraging people to use their resources sustainably. Wildlife is now embraced as a complimentary land use method to agriculture and livestock herding.
People are living with wildlife, including predators and large mammals, and are managing their natural resources wisely. They are also reaping the benefits. In 2009, community-based natural resource management generated over N$ 42 million in income to rural Namibians. All the while, the program is facilitating a remarkable recovery of wildlife.
Namibia now boasts the largest free-roaming population of black rhinos and cheetahs in the world and is the only country with an expanding population of free-roaming lions. Namibia's elephant population more than doubled between 1995 and 2008 from 7,500 to over 16,000 individuals. This remarkable turnaround has led some to call Namibia's conservation efforts the greatest African wildlife recovery story over told.

NAMPA: WHK- Africa Youth Day 27 Nov 2012 .mov
WINDHOEK, 27 NOV (NAMPA) - Kenyan High Commissioner to Namibia Peter Gitau has encouraged Namibian youth to become part of the country's economic development and to promote local products.
Gitau was speaking at the celebration of the seventh African Youth Day in the capital on Tuesday. African Youth Day is commemorated on 01 November every year and was this year observed under the theme 'Africa must deliver as one to empower African youth for sustainable development'.
We are required to not only shape the youth into a pool of disciplined and organised manpower through participation in social economic development activities, but also to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skill to be great leaders, he said.
The Kenyan High Commissioner added that African youth need to be encouraged to exhibit a great sense of patriotism through active participation in important national development projects.
He said through this, a sense of ownership with regards to national objectives will be fostered in them.
Gitau encouraged Namibian youths to seize the opportunity to pursue their goals in order to contribute to Namibia's future.
He also encouraged youth to stay away from alcohol and drugs and to avoid teenage pregnancy.
The event was attended by youth leaders and school learners.
