이토록 사람을 편하게 하는 절집이 있을까?
순천 조계산 기슭에 위치한 선암사는 '가장 한국적인 모습을 한 절집'이라 평가받는데, 이는 가람의 규모나 건축의 기법으로서의 기준이 아니다.
선암사로 향하는 진입로는 그 경관이 빼어나기도 하거니와 경내의 낮은 담장을 따라 걷다보면 사계절 다양하게 피어나는 꽃과 나무들이 여느 호젓한 고향집에 온 듯한 인상을 준다. 한국인이라면 누구나 가지고 있는 고향에 대한 기억과 흡사한 절집이 선암사인 것이다.
경내에는 지정된 유명한 문화재들도 많이 있지만 이곳으로 사람들의 발길을 이끄는 것은 단연 수령 600여년이 넘는 매화나무.
나무의 기품있는 형태와 짙은 향은 '선암매(仙巖梅)'라 이름짓고 천연기념물로 지정될 정도로 우아하다.
천년고찰로 오랜 시간 시나브로 빛바랜 단청과 기둥들이 은은한 멋과 고즈넉한 풍취를 더하고 사찰을 둘러싼 자연림이 주는 포근함을 간직한 선암사를 만나 본다.

Seonamsa - Korean Buddhist Temple
Seonam Temple, Seonamsa, is a Korean Buddhist temple in the city of Suncheon, South Jeolla Province, South Korea.
The name Seonam (Heavenly Rock) is derived from the legend that a heavenly being once played the game of Go here.
Legend states that in 529 CE missionary-monk Ado built a hermitage at this site on the eastern slope of Jogyesan and named it Biroam.
350 years later in 861 National Master Doseon Guksa constructed a grand temple here and named it Seonamsa. As the head temple of the Samamsa trio, (three rock temples, Unamsa, Yongamsa, Seonamsa), Seonamsa played a fundamental role in the development of Seon Buddhism, and many masters have practiced, taught and attained awakening here.

Seonamsa Temple, which means “Heavenly Rock Temple,” in English, was built, in 861 A.D.,Legend has it that, many Buddhist masters have practiced and taught at Seonamsa Temple after attaining enlightenment. Seonamsa Temple houses 19 cultural properties in its halls and museum and continues to be a prime tourist attraction in this area.
“천상의 돌”이라는 영어의미를 가진 선암사는 A.D 861에 건축되었습니다.
전설에 따르면 선암사에서 많은 불교 대사들이 진리를 깨달은 후 수행을 하고 가르침을 얻었다고 합니다. 선암사는 절의 방과 박물관안에 19개의 문화재를 가지고 있으며 이 지역의 주된 관광명소로 자리매김하고 있습니다.
OK, so let’s take a look around this temple. These colors you see are the same colors in every temple. You can see the intricate carved work at the top. This is an older temple. Very beautiful.

I’m going to show you the corner pieces on the edge of the roof, all very unique. I’ll see if I can get a closer shot here so you can see. That’s better. See the end pieces? And, we’ll take a look at some of them over here too.

So many of these temples have beautiful golden Buddhas inside, but out of respect I’m not going to film them for you. Just, take my word for it, they are very lovely. You can see the mountain behind me, and actually there is a tree I think is a pomegranate, or the fruit looks like a pomegranate.

So, I will show you some painted wood that still has quite a bit of detail to it. Can you see the bird? It’s all very lovely, very unique. This particular style of architecture dates back a very long time.

As I was walking down this walkway and about to enter into this garden, I noticed a group of templestay participants that were gathered. They were taking a tour of the facility.

So I was walking through this lovely garden, noticing this lovely pond to the right, and I found my friend Brigitte. So, I decided to ambush her and ask her some questions about what she thought about this particular temple and how it compared to others she has seen.
사랑스러운 정원을 걷고 있습니다. 옆에는 아름다운 연못이 있구요 그리고 내 친구 Brigitte가 있네요. 그녀에게 그녀가 여태까지 봤던 절들과 어떻게 다른지 이 특별한 절에 대한 생각은 어떤지 기습으로 다가가서 질문을 해보겠습니다.
So what do you think Brigitte? “What?” How does this one compare to others you have seen in Korea? “Wow”. “Excuse me while I take some more pictures.” I guess that means you like it? “Yeah I know.”
Brigitte! 이 절 어때? 뭐? 한국에서 보았던 다른 절들과 비교해서 어때? 와우! 사진을 좀더 찍을께. 이 절이 더 좋지? 그래 그런거 같아.
So I’m going to film a little bit here. Let’s walk down and I’ll show you the persimmon trees here. Looks like one has fallen off the tree. Here, this little guy has fallen off. This one is a soft one. Korean persimmons are very tasty, very delicious.

Sogang's student exchange program organized a field trip to tour a city outside of Seoul. Suncheon is a city outside of Seoul that is known for Suncheon Bay which is a wetland reserve. Suncheon also has beautiful gardens as well. Our program chose Suncheon because not many foreigners get to visit this area or partake in some cultural traditions. It was a nice getaway from the city. The specific places we visited was: Suncheon Bay National Garden, Songgwangsa, Seonamsa, and Nagan Eupseong Folk Village (Traditional Korean Village)

무지개다리 밑에 용머리가 있다 선암사 승선교

전라남도 순천 조계산 동쪽에 자리한 선암사는 백제시대 창건된 천년고찰이다.
그리고 그 아름다운 풍광의 시작에는 무지개다리, 승선교가 있다.
신비로운 모양 때문인지 승선교에는 다양한 전설들이 전해 내려오는데
그 이야기의 중심에 다리에 박혀 있는 용머리가 있다.
그 용머리를 빼면 다리가 무너진다고 하는데... 과연 사실일까?
그리고 용머리를 자세히 보면 철사에 꿰인 동전 한 닢을 물고 있는 것을 발견할 수 있는데
용은 왜 동전 한 닢을 물고 있는 것일까?
무지개다리에 전해 내려오는 신비스러운 이야기를 만나본다.

[짐벌영상] 선암사 선암매의 유혹 - 천연기념물 488호 | UNESCO 세계문화유산
순천 선암사 선암매(順天 仙岩寺 仙巖梅)는
전라남도 순천시 승주읍, 선암사에 있는 매실나무이다.
순천 선암사 경내에는 수령이 350~650년에 이르는
오래된 매화나무 50여 그루가 서식하고 있다.
담장을 따라서 피어난 23그루 매화나무는
3월 말경에 만개하여 장관을 이룬다.
이들 매화나무를 가리켜 선암매(仙巖梅)라고 부른다.
선암매 여러 나무들의 높이는 5~12m까지 다양하다.
이들 중 흰 매화 1그루와 분홍 매화 1그루가
2007년 11월 26일 대한민국의 천연기념물 제488호로 지정되었다.

Songgwangsa was founded by Zen Master Haerin in the Silla Dynasty and qualifies as a Seungbo temple that produced many high monks and 16 Guksas including Bocho Guksa. As great as its ancient history, Songgwangsa has many stories and cultural assets
[TRAVEL JEOLLA] Suncheon Tour: Seonam Temple, Nagan Folk Village & Suncheon Bay National Garden / 순천
2016 Asia Foreign Student Community in Suncheon Tour was a trip organised by UCC (Universal Culture Center) and The Forest.

Here is the 3 places we visited:
-Seonamsa Temple (선암사-순천):
Seonamsa is a beautiful temple located at the west end of Mt. Jogyesan. You have to walk about 1 km from the entrance to reach the temple. If you go along the valley, two rainbow shaped bridges appear; the large one at the back is Seungseon Bridge. Seungseon Bridge is designated as National Treasure No. 400, and it is Korea’s most beautiful arched stone bridge. Because it blends in so well with the valley below, it is often used as shooting location for movies and TV shows.
- Naganeupseong Folk Village (낙안읍성민속마을):
Naganeupseong Folk Village is located in Jeollanam-do Province and contains a town castle. Within the east, south and west of the castle, about 100 families still reside, and the castle area has been very well preserved. The folk village’s other source of pride is the monument of General Im Kyeong-Eop (1594~1646). At every first full moon of the new year, they hold a ritual ceremony and celebration at the general’s monument, with games such as seesaw jumping, swings, and other folk activities.
Nagan Village is also really famous for its Fortress. From there, you can see all the beautiful rice padies and Jeollanamdo vicinity.
- The Suncheon Bay National Garden (순천만국가정원):
Designated as Korea's representative garden, Suncheon Bay National Garden is one of the biggest garden i ever seen. It's divided into different areas like The Korean Traditional Garden, The Dream Bridge, Suncheon Bay International Wetland Center, Metasequoia path, Sunchen Lake Garden... and so on.
I really appreciated to see gardens from all around the world and the outdoor architecture is amazing !
