16C의 임진왜란 - 정유재란 당시 무려 일본군 장수 가토 기요마사가 10만명의 인원이 지은 서생포왜성입니다. 1594년에서 1597년 사이 사명대사와 카토 기요마사가 한반도의 운명을 건 세 번의 회담이 있었던 역사적의의가 담긴 장소이기도 합니다. 낙엽이 지는 가을이라 봄이 되면 다시 가보려고 합니다.

Visit the Chungui Shrine, Haksung-dong, Jung-gu Ulsan S.Korea

The Chungui (to mean loyalty and uprightness) Shrine is dedicated to the memory of the Ulsan righteous men who defeated the Japanese armed forces during Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 and 1597.
April 14, 1592, the Japanese armed forces that invaded Pusan in Korea took the Dongrae Fortress and then occupied Ulsan.the high-principled men in Ulsan who were dispossessed of their territory raised an army resolutely on April 23, 1592 and struggled against the Japanese invaders. they dared to do a surprise attack or defeated enemy troops in such a various fortified zone as Ulsan and Unyang in order to recapture the castles occupied by the enemy. And also, they took part in the battle for recapturing the Kyungju-town castle and distinguished themselves in the battle.
In the meantime, when a war, re-invasion broke out by the Japanese army in 1597, a Japanese General Katoo Kiyomasa who was going north came to withdraw from the front due to a counterattack of the Allied Forces of Korea and China, building castles in Dosan(the present Haksung Park) and Seosaengpo in Ulsan and Holding the castles. At that time, Ulsan righteous men made an attack on the castles with the Allied Forces and they recovered the two castles at last as the Japanese army withdrew from there.
A great many righteous-men's lives were sacrificed in Ulsan during the war and Ulsans territory fell into ruin. After the war was over, King Sunjo rewarded them by dubbing them the meritorious retainers of Sunmuwon jong and had Ulsan-county raised to a higher status of Ulsan-dohobu by adding it and Unyang-hyun for county people who had overcome difficulties.
November 1994 Metropolitan city of Ulsan started to construct a shrine to the memory of ancestors' loyalty and uprightness and completed the construction of five buildings except the main building in an area of 6,013m² on july 2000, and named it the Chungui Shrine . In the main hall are enshrined 242 mortuary tablets, especially with an ancestral tablet for the unnamed men who died in the war. The citizens of Ulsan hold a ceremony wholeheartedly in spring and autumn every year.
