2019 Seoul Lantern Festival lights up Cheonggyecheon Stream
2019 서울 빛초롱축제...등불로 태어난 동화 캐릭터들
Hundreds of colorful lanterns fill the autumn sky at Cheonggyecheon Stream.
This year's displays drew inspiration from fairytales.
Eum Ji-young shows us what to expect from the 2019 Seoul Lantern Festival
A flying magic carpet to save the princess from the fairytale Aladdin and the Magic Lamp lights up the Seoul sky.
The Little Prince and Little Red Riding Hood also welcome the guests.
They are just a few of the more than 70 sets of lanterns along the Cheonggyecheon Stream in central Seoul where the festival takes place every year.
Unlike previous years, this year's event features widely loved characters from fairytales with a theme of 'Seoul, Your Fairy Tale' so that both guests from Korea and foreigners can relate to the festival.
The festival, which is in its 11th year has 1.2 kilometers of displays including eye-catching pieces from traditional Korean fairytales and key heroes from Korean history along with some of the city's iconic attractions and monuments.
It's really beautiful. I really liked the lanterns because we don't do anything like this in my country.
I really liked the lanterns from the fairytales. I found them very beautiful and also I really liked the King Sejong sitting on the throne.
And there are plenty of other events for visitors to enjoy.
Visitors to this year's Seoul Lantern Festival can float a wish boat along the Cheonggyecheon Stream or make their own lantern.
The event attracts more than 2 million people from around the globe every year.
We are French bloggers in France about Korean culture so we want to promote Korean culture in France so this is why we came here because we know about this festival.
One of the main events on the festival calendar in Korea, this year's Seoul Lantern Festival runs until November 17th.

Seoul Lantern Festival 2018
Seoul celebrates its 10th year of the Seoul Lantern Festival this November! Illuminated life-size paper lanterns line in the Cheonggyecheon Stream in the heart of Seoul. Last year the lanterns featured Olympic Mascots Soohorang and Bandabi celebrating the 2017 Winter Olympics.
The 2018 the theme, Seoul Dream, Flowing Light highlights the accomplishments of Seoul presenting lanterns of the Seoul Tower, Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Seoul Station, k-pop and basketball stars and more!
The Cheonggyecheon Stream is 1.2 km long. Normally you can enter the stream at various locations. However, for the Lantern Festival, the access points have been blocked off. Enter the stream at location closest to City Hall.
By subway, Jonggak Station ( Exit 5) on Line 1 is closest to the entrance. Once you exit the station, walk one block straight until you see the stream. Turn right until you see the swirly red and blue tree.
The Koreana Hotel is also close to the entrance of the stream and makes a great marker to enter into Waze.
How Long Does Lantern Festival Last?
The Seoul Lantern Festival begins on the first Friday in November until the third Sunday in November. In 2018, the festival runs from November 2nd through November 18th. The lanterns are lit every day from 17:00 until 23:00. After dark the lanterns are the most stunning.
The lanterns are lit every day of the week as well. Please note, the Cheonggyechenon Stream is extremely crowded on the weekends. However, crowds thin out considerably after 21:00.
Plan on spending an hour and a half to two hours to enjoy the Lantern Festival.
How Much Does the Lantern Festival Cost
Admission to the festival is free.
To decorate a paper lantern and release it into the stream costs 3000 won. The paper lanterns can be purchased along the stream closer to the entrance.
What to Wear
Temperatures in November are quickly dropping, especially after the sun sets. During the day time, expect temperatures in the 40°s and 50°s Fahrenheit (4° to 10°C) . Evening temperatures will be between the 20°s and 40°s Fahrenheit (-7° to 4°C). Most importantly, the winds really whip through the corridor of the stream. Consider wearing layers: a thick coat, hat, gloves, comfortable shoes with a thick sole, and wool socks.
Hotels Near the Festival

The Koreana Hotel is located near the entrance to the Lantern Festival. For a more budget friendly option, the Sleepy Panda Stream Walk is located near the end of the stream. Make reservations early as hotels fill up quickly during the festival.

Is the Lantern Festival Stroller Friendly?
Many people have taken strollers to the Lantern Festival. Be aware that there are a few rough concrete sections that may be difficult to maneuver with a stroller. Also, the crowds may add a degree of difficulty. Wearing a baby carrier will make it easier to move about. However, some have said that they were extremely thankful they brought a stroller because their child was able to sleep.
Restrooms
Consider using the restroom before entering the stream, especially if you have small children. There are not restrooms along the walkway of the stream. Instead, restrooms can be found on the street level.

We continue our Seoul Fall series - 11 days in South Korea. This is our Day 8 Part 2 video where we return to Seoul and visit the Seoul Lantern Festival which happens every fall season.
Trip date - Nov 2-12
In this video, we took an express bus back to Seoul from Jeonju and met with our Korean students. It's been awhile since we've last seen them and it's great to have the chance to meet them in Korea.
After having a sumptuous belly-bursting unlimited Samgyepsal (pork belly)/Korean BBQ dinner, we took a bus to Cheonggyecheon Stream where the annual Seoul Lantern Festival is held. After saying goodbye to them, we head over to Gwanghwamun Square so get a glimpse of the statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. From there we took the subway back to Myeongdong to regroup with our friends Jappy and Veb at the Underground Shopping Center for some K-pop Merch shopping (where our friend Jap dropped and lost a 50,000 KRW bill... Aw.)
If you're wondering where we bought the oven-baked Hottoek, check out the previous video (Day 8 Part 1):
For Day 9, we visited Bukchon Hanok Village -

JEONJU TO SEOUL BUS INFO
From Jeonju Hanok village, make your way towards the Jeonju Express Bus Terminal - our cab fare was 5300 KRW (approx US$5)
From there you can ride a direct bus to Seoul. There are two bus types , the more comfortable one (the one we rode going to Jeonju with larger seats is around 18000+ KRW (approx US$16) while the regular one is 12800KRW (approx US$12). We prefer the special bus if available but we were in a hurry so we just took the other bus which was what was leaving next.

Welcome to the first Seoul vlog of the year! We also visited an incredibly beautiful temple in Seoul called “Suguksa” and the lantern festival at Cheonggyecheon Stream, so it wasn’t all bad ;)
Have you been to a traditional Korean Tea House? Or can you recommend a nice one in Seoul? I didn’t give up on them yet ;)

[4K] Walk around Seoul Lantern Festival in Cheonggyecheon Stream
Seoul Lantern Festival at Cheonggyecheon
Looking for a peaceful sunrise walk in Seoul? How about a romantic sunset stroll? One of my favorite spots in the city, which is beautiful year around, is Cheonggyecheon. You should make it a mission to find this peaceful stream in the middle of the city. Cheonggyechoen is surrounded by City Hall, Myeong-dong, Gwanghwamun, the palaces and is a quick walk from Insa-dong. Throughout the year, there are many amazing events that happen along its pathways and bridges. From upcycling exhibitions to the annual lantern festival, it’s always bustling with crowds of tourists and locals alike. There are often photography and art exhibitions, so keep your eyes peeled for the local talent. They even have a few hidden spots to throw a coin in and make a wish. Don’t forget to look out for those hidden spots and find the rainbow bridge on your night strolls. I recommend visiting some of the cool museums and bookstores that also run along the stream. The easiest way to get there from the subway is taking exit 5 of Gwanghwamun station. Walk straight and make a left at the giant shell statue, which marks the start of the stream. For early birds and night owls, there’s at least one 24 hour café along the stream, so you can get a caffeine fix while waiting for the sunrise. Pro-tip: The lantern festival will begin November 3rd and end November 19th. Get there at sunrise at least one day, the reflections from the surrounding buildings with lanterns on the water is a breathtaking sight.
