Kinabatangan River Safari - Borneo, Sabah, Malaysia
The Kinabatangan River (Malay: Sungai Kinabatangan) is a river in Sabah, Malaysia. It is the second longest river in Malaysia, with a length of 560 kilometres from its headwaters in the mountains of southwest Sabah, to its outlet at the Sulu Sea, east of Sandakan.
Kinabatangan is known for its remarkable wildlife and fascinating habitats such as limestone caves at Gomantong hill, dryland dipterocarp forests, riverine forest, freshwater swamp forest, oxbow lakes and salty mangrove swamps near the coast.
The ecology of the upper reaches of the river has been severely disrupted by excessive logging and clearing of land for plantations. However, the original lowland forests and mangrove swamps near the coast have largely survived, provide sanctuary for a population of saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus), and contain some of Borneo's highest concentrations of wildlife. Of special note are Borneo's indigenous proboscis monkeys, Bornean orangutan and Asian elephants. The area is also known for its great variety of birdlife.
In Sukau, many of the major tour operators maintain lodges. All lodges offer packages, which usually include transport, accommodation, food, river cruises, and guiding services. However, most of the money spent in these Lodges leaves the area. Visitors should also check locally run bed & breakfast and homestay accommodation.
Further up Kinabatangan river at the villages of Bilit or Batu Putih you could opt to stay with the local Orang Sungai people in the Miso Walai homestay program part or a Sabah National Project. Nearby the villages there are beautiful series of oxbow lakes. They provide accommodation, food, jungle guides, boat trips, fishing and other activities. They also have recently built an eco-lodge in the jungle nearby one of the oxbow lakes – Tungog lake.
We would like to thank our guide Mr. Boy from Sepilok Tropical Wildlife Adventure for the excellent presentation.

Turtle Island Borneo | Exploring Sabah Malaysia
In this video we head to Sandakan, Malaysia, Borneo and head to Turtle Island. Here we had the amazing opportunity to help a baby turtle back to the sea when his siblings had been eaten by a monitor lizard, watch a mother turtle lay eggs on the beach and then release some hatchlings to the see. It was such a special 24 hours part of our trip with Borneo Dream:

Malaysia - Sandakan Hotspot Eco Tours
Flying from Kota Kinabalu (KK) to Sandakan is easy, fast and inexpensive. This tour was very well organized by Mr Lai of Sandakan Hotspot Eco-Tours. Leaving from KK early morning on day 1, I was met as well as other tourists at Sandakan airport by Hadi, our professional and agreeable tour-guide. After a quick breakfast at a local cafe, we arrived at the Sepilok Orang-Utan Reahabilitation Center, one of only 4 such centers in the world. You get to see orang-utans coming at feeding time on their free will as they are free in nature. You also get to see the newly rescued orang-utans getting some training to be able to survive later in the wild. After a great visit there, we had a nice buffet lunch at a local restaurant and our comfortable A/C bus took us to the Gomantong Caves. We were very fortunate to visit during the 6 weeks a year when bird nests collectors are at work. It gave an extra interest to this huge cathedral-type of cave. Then, we drove to the Sungai Kinabatangan, Sabah's longest river. After checking-in at Borneo Natural Bilit Sukau Resort where I was quite surprised at how nice the bungalows were: I did not need the A/C as the cool temperature and fans where just right. Nice traditional style but clean and spacious. Rooms with personality! After a quick snack, we went for a late afternoon river cruise to spot many types of birds, proboscis monkeys, macaques, and perhaps crocodiles and pygmy elephants. You realize then that your eyes are much better than your camera at distinguishing the creatures often far away and in the shade! After this 2h1/2 hour trip we came back at the resort for a buffet dinner with the many other tourists (most backpackers-type) that came for a day tour or overnight like I did. Shortly after dinner, we were invited to join a night walk around the property to see some animals sleeping like insects and birds. After a great night of sleep, I got up early again, this time to go to a 6am river tour, giving us more chance to see the wild animals clinging to the jungle bordering the river with infamous palm oil trees fields beyond! I let you watch the video to see what animals we did see … After a breakfast on our river tour return, a big bus took a lot of us to diverse destinations, sometimes to connect with other buses. Back at Sandakan airport mid-day, I was back in KK by 4pm on day2. A busy but really fun 2-day tour!
I recommend and thank Mr Lai of Sandakan Hotspot Eco-Tours for his support and our great guide, Hadi. Filmed in August 2018.
Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari with Borneo Eco Tours - Sabah, Borneo
Last January I had an amazing experience in Sabah, Borneo, during the Kinabatangan river safari I took with Borneo Eco Tours, a sustainable tour operator. During the trip I stayed at Sukau Rainforest Lodge, one of National Geographic's Unique Lodges of the World: this is my video review of the three-day trip.
Spoiler: it includes orangutans, pygmy elephants, and lots of cuteness!
GOMANTONG CAVES - Swiftlet nests, which are harvested for bird's nest soup
The Gomantong Caves are an intricate cave system inside Gomantong Hill in Sandakan Division, Sabah, Malaysia.
For centuries, the caves have been renowned for their valuable edible swiftlet nests, which are harvested for bird's nest soup. The most valuable of the nests, the white ones, can sell for very high prices.
The birds' nest collection is an ancient tradition, and the trading of these nests has been done since at least 500 AD. Twice a year, from February to April and July to September, locals with licenses climb to the roof of the caves, using only rattan ladders, ropes, and bamboo poles, and collect the nests. The first collection takes place early in the breeding season before the swiftlets lay their eggs. The birds then make another nest in which they finally lay their eggs. After the young have fledged, the second collection is made. These individuals are very much in demand by the people and communities that hold the Government's harvesting licenses.
We would like to thank our guide Mr. Boy from Sepilok Tropical Wildlife Adventure for @STWA the excellent presentation.
Thanks for watching!

A compilation of footage from our trip to Kuala Lumpur and Borneo, July 2018! We stayed in KL for 3 days, then just over a week in Borneo, staying in Sandakan, then Kota Kinabalu. We visited Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, where orphaned and abandoned orangutans are rehabilitated before being reintroduced to the wild. Then we went on a river cruise through the Kinabatangan river, seeing the wildlife to which it is home. Finally, we had a day in Manukan island swimming with tropical fish and sunbathing on the cleanest and clearest beaches. It was an incredible experience!

Wild Borneo Expedition
Redfern's Wild Borneo expedition takes in the very best wildlife highlights that Borneo has to offer. Starting with a boat journey to see the curious proboscis monkeys, we explore towering tropical rainforests in search of one of the world’s largest flowers, with blooms up to 1 metre in diameter. We then travel upriver by canoe to stay at a remote longhouse, experiencing traditional life and customs, and explore vast caves used by gatherers of bird nests for soup both in ancient times as today.
We then observe orangutans up close, before relaxing in soothing geothermal hot water springs prior to an ascent of Borneo’s tallest and most spectacular mountain, Mt. Kinabalu. After seeing exquisite orchids and giant carnivorous pitcher plants, we end the tour on a beautiful coral island for two days of relaxing on tranquil beaches and snorkelling in fish filled waters. Scuba diving is a possibility for those who hold a dive qualification or simply wish to try!
