The historic wineries of Great Western, Best's and Seppelt
ABC's Australia Wide program takes a look at the historic wine town of Great Western and its two main wineries - Best's and Seppelt. The companies have the same humble beginnings but have taken divergent paths.
Seppelt’s Underground Drives/Cellars at Great Western wine region winery near Stawell Ararat
Dark, mysterious and foreboding.
This is how many feel when descending into the labyrinth of the tentacle like reaches of the Great Western underground tunnels called “The Drives”.
They are the largest underground cellars in the Southern Hemisphere.
Not to make people alarmed but, there are more than three kilometres of them complete with dark secrets and much trapped below.
The secrets belong to the many workers who, over the years, have slaved away underground, creating what is trapped in “The Drives”.
What is trapped you may ask. The answer is Wine. Hundreds and thousands of bottles of the stuff.
They are all trapped deep beneath the historic Great Western winery.
Beware: Watching this video may tempt you into going down there, in the attempt of rescuing a few (dozen).
