Sequoia Park Zoo: A Gem in the Redwoods
For tips on how to create videos like this one:
Sequoia Park Zoo is located in the seaport town of Eureka, California, along the Pacific northwest coast. Set amid a mature coastal redwoods forest, this little gem of a zoo is a much beloved part of Humboldt County and the Lost Coast California region.
While it may be small in size (about 7 acres), the Sequoia Park Zoo is big on physical beauty, animal care, conservation activities and education. Founded in 1907, the zoo is the oldest in California and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
While at Sequoia Park Zoo, stroll through the beautifully maintained grounds and discover over 250 animals representing 75 species in a variety of exhibits. Some of the animals you'll find include: Chilean flamingos, crested screamers, Patagonian cavies, donkeys, a yak, cottontop tamarin, spider monkeys, gibbons, scarlet Ibis, Alpacas, red pandas, and an aviary with local and exotic birds. There's also a collection of barnyard animals and a petting corral.
The Sequoia Park Zoo is mostly level and easily maneuverable for families using strollers or the handicapped. Benches abound for quick breaks during your zoo tour.
Secrets of the Forest is an indoor, interactive exhibit that displays the forest habitats of some of our native species. It also shows the delicate balance between man's activities and the impact on Humboldt County's animal life, streams, rivers and bay.
A visit to the Sequoia Park Zoo is the perfect half-day excursion. I suggest you start off your visit in the morning when the animals are most active and have lunch at the zoo cafe where you'll find menu options including beef and garden burgers, chili, garlic fries, wraps, sandwiches, salads, desserts, plus an espresso bar. Eat in the indoor dining area or go outside to the picnic tables where you can take in the sights and sounds (those crested screamers really DO scream!) while enjoying your meal.
Then cap off your visit by exploring the adjacent redwood forest and park, which includes a duck pond, playground equipment for the kids and 60 acres of towering coastal redwoods with easily accessible paths suitable for most ages and activity levels.

Video Tips and How I Created this Video:
I filmed this video concentrating on short shots. I spent about 2 hours at the Sequoia Park Zoo on a sunny morning in April 2013. Using my Canon VIXIA HFR300, I filmed 125 short shots ranging anywhere from 10 seconds to 90 seconds of footage each. Once home, I took those 125 short shots and selected the 64 shots I liked the best.
I edited these using Cyberlink Power Director 10 editing software on my Toshiba Satellite L775 laptop. I ended up with 64 clips ranging in length from the shortest segment of 2 seconds to the longest segment of 22 seconds.
The power of a short shot video is that it gives your video momentum and is effective in telling your video's story without boring your audience. People are used to (and expect) videos with short clips even if they don't realize that's what they're viewing. Count the number of shots the next time you watch commercials and you'll be amazed at how many the pros can fit into your average 30-second spot.
Try using the short shots in your next video and see for yourself the power of this technique!

The Sequoia Park Zoo: When Conservation Meets Innovation
Established in 1907, Sequoia Park Zoo is the oldest zoo in California and one of the smallest accredited zoos in the country. Situated next to the magnificent old-growth redwoods of Sequoia Park, the zoo is truly a jewel in the heart of Eureka. It’s a major draw for tourists and locals, schools and families, students and researchers – anyone with an interest in animals, conservation and education. - SPZ Website.

Ravens at Sequoia Park Zoo, Eureka CA
These are the ravens at the zoo. As you can see, they have broken wings. This is why the zoo has them, so they can have a chance at living instead of just be put back out into the wild and be killed. I assume they came from the local area, since I know we do have some ravens here (I still can't figure out how you tell the difference between a crow and a raven when you see them at a distance, especially if they're quiet). I don't think these guys appreciated being stared at by people all day though =/ They were beautiful birds, and I appreciate having the opportunity to see them up close like that though.

California: Humboldt Redwoods State Park
Humboldt Redwoods State Park is a state park of California, the world's largest remaining contiguous old-growth forest of coast redwoods. It is located 30 miles (48 km) south of Eureka, California, named after the great nineteenth-century scientist, Alexander von Humboldt. The park was established by the Save the Redwoods League in 1921 largely from lands purchased from the Pacific Lumber Company. Beginning with the dedication of the Raynal Bolling Memorial Grove, it has grown to become the third-largest park in the California State Park system, now containing 51,651 acres (20,902 ha) through acquisitions and gifts to the state.
It is part of the Northern California coastal forests ecoregion and has 23,600 acres (96 km2) of old-growth forests. 17,000 acres (69 km2) are old-growth redwoods, comprising the entire Bull Creek watershed and the Rockefeller Forest.
The park is famed for its coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), many of which grow to over 300 feet (91 m) in height. The forests on alluvial plains are almost pure redwood forest, but the forests on the slopes also contain Douglas-fir.
Over 100 of the 137 known trees over 350 feet (110 m) tall—all coast redwoods—occur in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It is home to the 4th-tallest measured living redwood, the Stratosphere Giant, which was measured at 112.94 metres (370.5 ft) in 2004. Stratosphere Giant was the tallest known living redwood until the discovery of three taller trees in Redwood National Park; the tallest, Hyperion, measuring 115.55 metres (379.1 ft) in September 2006.
Before the discovery of Hyperion, the tallest redwood ever measured was the Dyerville Giant, also in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It was 113.4 metres (372 ft) high when it fell in March 1991. It was estimated to be 1,600 years old. The Dyerville Giant can be seen on Founders Grove Nature Trail, which honors the creators of Save the Redwoods League. Also in this grove is Founders Tree, which is 346 feet (105 m) tall with circumference of 40 feet (12 m).
The Avenue of the Giants offers visitors a 32 miles (51 km) drive through Humboldt Redwoods State Park with eight stops along an auto tour of park highlights. The park has over 100 miles (160 km) of hiking trails. Visitors to the park can go horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, and swimming in the South Fork Eel River. The park is prone to fire hazards, and camping is permitted in specified areas. Almost 250 sites are available for use, including an equestrian camp. Nearby Burlington, serves as a main camping spot, alongside Albee.
The Chandelier Tree in Drive-Thru Tree Park is a 276-foot (84 m) tall coast redwood tree in Leggett, California with a 6-foot (1.8 m) wide by 6-foot-9-inch (2.06 m) high hole cut through its base to allow a car to drive through. Its base measures 16 ft (4.9 m) diameter at breast height (chest-high). The sign claims 315 ft. high and 21 ft. wide, but a Certified Arborist experienced with tallest redwoods, using a laser rangefinder, measured the tree as 276 ft. high and 16 ft. diameter. The name Chandelier Tree comes from its unique limbs that resemble a chandelier. The limbs, which measure from 4 to 7 ft (1.2 to 2.1 m) in diameter, begin 100 ft (30 m) above the ground. The tree is believed to have been carved in the early 1930s by Charlie Underwood.
The closest to Eureka is the Shrine Drive-Thru Tree, 50 miles to the south in Myers Flat, on the world famous Avenue of the Giants. Unlike the others, the cleaved opening was created primarily by nature, not man.
The Shrine Drive Thru Tree has been attracting visitors for years. Located in Myers Flat, four miles south of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park Visitor Center, it's an easy stop right on the Avenue of the Giants -- just look for the signs and the Gift Shop. Seasonally open - closed in winter

The Henry Cowell Redwoods State park was home to the Ohlone tribe for thousands of years. This park has some of the oldest and best preserved pacific coast redwoods in the state of California with the oldest being 1,500 years in age. Luckily today the redwoods still stand considering that they almost got the ax back when Roaring Camp begin as a small settlement and the first sawmill built west of the Mississippi. Presidents including John Fremont visited this grove during there journeys. However, it would be men like Joseph Warren Welch Sr and Jr., Andrew P. Hill, William T. Jeter and Henry Cowel who focused on saving these trees.
During the 1870's when Roaring Camp dissipated as lumber was being exhausted a railroad had sprung up this provided tourism to the area for those who could take the train from Santa Cruz to its mountains to see these true giants. While later service from Henry Cowell took its passengers along the San Lorenzo Mountains to the beach the first of its kind. Today the railroad is still up and operating carrying tourist to and from the beach all the way to this beautiful redwood grove.
The purpose of the video is to give our viewers a birds eye view so they can virtually tour the park which includes the Redwood Grove, Roaring Camp, Big Trees Pacific Railroad and a brief walk through of the Capritaurus Bigfoot Museum with a final stop at the old Felton Covered Bridge. All significant sites which surround the redwood grove with nature in between and some mild entertainment. Then the very end has a lovely gallery of our adventure along with some music.
While I had wished I filmed more I do not want to give away to much its a location that everyone should visit once in there life but at the same time id love to return once again to visit the Big Ben Grove, Barrel Mill and Lime Kiln Site someday. We hope you enjoy this wonderful compilation of all these great sites and gems surrounding Big Grove and what is known as the Garden Of Eden it truly is an amazing place full of giants which still stand today over a thousand years later.

CALIFORNIA REDWOODS PHANTOM DRONE 4K
Redwood Horizon
Filming Location was Corralitos, California (Santa Cruz Mountains) with a DJI Phantom 3 Standard Edition.
All footage was was filmed on June 5th, 2016 and edited with Adobe Premiere Pro CC.
Maximum drone elevation reached roughly 1200 feet.
The song used for the video is Nothing You Can Say (featuring Lucy Stone) by Lane 8.
The white tree near the end of the video is a Sycamore and has been reported to be the second tallest in the world. While it is not located at the plateau where most of the filming occurred, it is at the bottom of the valley below it. Height of the tree was verified by laser measurement. According to my drone's measurement the tree is just over 160 feet tall.
Many thanks to my loving parents who made this video possible and my many friends for supporting me in all that I do.
