Sequoyah's Cabin
My sister, brother-in-law, and I all visited Sequoyah's Cabin in Sallisaw, OK, on October 19, 2011. It was a kind of pilgrimage for us, celebrating our Cherokee heritage. It was a beautiful place and I really enjoyed the visit.

Located in Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Sequoyah’s Cabin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated as a National Literary Landmark in 2006. Sequoyah, the inventor of the Cherokee written language, built this one-room log cabin in 1829, shortly after moving to Oklahoma. The cabin is maintained as a historic house museum, furnished to appear as it might have when Sequoyah lived there. There are relics and documents associated with his life on display.

Here is the transcription of this video narration in English:
Sequoyah's Cabin Museum in Oklahoma.
While traveling West on Route 40 last summer,
I made a brief excursion
to see the nationally registered historic landmark
of Sequoyah's Cabin
and museum.
Sequoyah is a very famous Cherokee.
I learned there are eight other state parks
within 66 miles of this landmark.
Sequoyah is most famous for
creating a writing system for the Cherokees.
He reduced the Cherokee language to 85 symbols
representing sounds.
This alphabet is called a syllabary.
In 1821 he introduced his syllabary to the Cherokee people.
And soon thereafter, thousands
of Cherokee became literate.
Sequoyah was born in an area known as
Monroe County, Tennessee.
Notice the unusual letters above
Cabin's name
and also at the entrance to the gate.
During this life he traveled as far as
Washington, DC
to California
and he spent some time in Alabama.
His cabin in Oklahoma was his home in his later years.

Sequoyah
Sequoyah, named in English George Gist or George Guess, was a Cherokee silversmith. In 1821 he completed his independent creation of a Cherokee syllabary, making reading and writing in Cherokee possible. This was one of the very few times in recorded history that a member of a pre-literate people independently created an effective writing system,. After seeing its worth, the people of the Cherokee Nation rapidly began to use his syllabary and officially adopted it in 1825. Their literacy rate quickly surpassed that of surrounding European-American settlers.
