The Serpentine Dam is an rockfill embankment dam with a concrete face and a controlled spillway across the Serpentine River, located in the South West region of Tasmania, Australia.
The impounded reservoir, also formed with the Edgar Dam and the Scotts Peak Dam, is called Lake Pedder which flooded Lake Edgar, a naturally forming fault scarp pond. The dam was constructed in 1971 by the Hydro Electric Corporation (TAS) as part of the Gordon River Power Development Scheme for the purpose of generating hydro-electric power via the conventional Gordon Power Station. Water from Lake Pedder is diverted to Lake Gordon (formed by the Gordon Dam) via the McPartlan Pass Canal.

Gordon River Adventure (Tasmania)

The Gordon River is one of the major rivers of Tasmania.
The river rises in the centre of the Island at Lake Richmond and flows westward for about 193 km where it empties into Macquarie Harbour on the west coast of Tasmania.
Major tributaries include the Serpentine & Franklin River.
The entire course of the Gordon River is an uninhabited wilderness area.
All boat excursions in the lower Gordon River from Macquarie Harbour starts at the town of Strahan.

Mt Sprent Tasmania is just past Strathgordon in the South West National Park. Starting from Serpentine Dam the walk offers stunning views over South West Tasmania and across to Mt Field and the mountains of the central west. We left our warm Clothes and waterproofs in the car so at 870m it started raining and the temp also dropped so we decided to head back. The return walk to the summit would take somewhere between 4 to 6hrs depending on your level of fitness.

Tasmania's ORIGINAL Lake Pedder - In Memoriam

This super 8 silent movie from March 1971 was filmed by bushwalker and conservationist Arnold Rowlands on his last flight into Lake Pedder before it was flooded by the damming of the Gordon, Serpentine, and Huon Rivers. I have digitised a video copy and added a soundtrack and titles, and wish to share my tribute to Lake Pedder with you. I walked into Lake Pedder in 1971 and this very special place lives on in my memory. May it inspire you too as it did many Tasmanians, who fought hard for its preservation, and although unsuccessful, laid the foundation for the world's first Green Political Party. May it live again one day!
