São Miguel Island - Azores
São Miguel is the biggest island in the Portuguese Azores archipelago. It’s known for its volcanic scenery, flora and rich marine life, including whales. Ponta Delgada, the capital, is home to the 18th-century City Gates, Gothic St. Sebastian Church and 16th-century Fort of São Brás. The twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades, one green and one blue, lie to the northwest. To the east, Furnas has fumaroles and hot springs.

São José is a parish in the municipality of Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores.
Right behind the Forte in center of Ponta Delgada, you will find the Hospital, a former Franciscan monastery, with its church Igreja de São José. Constructed in the beginning of the 18th century on the site of smaller chapel from the 16th century, this triple-naved church is the largest sacral edifice in the archipelago. The rather plain, yet imposing façade conceals a richly adorned interior, with fresco-painted vaults, four magnificent gilded wood-carved side altars, a sanctuary covered with beautiful blue and white glazed azulejos, interesting paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries showing Hispanic-Mexican influences and Baroque jacaranda furniture in the vestry. Adjoining to the left stands the chapel Nossa Senhora das Dores, which was added later and is a perfect example of Baroque architecture on the Azores.
History of the Sao Jose parish in Portugese :
As terras onde hoje se encontra a igreja paroquial de São José eram, no século XVI, propriedade de Fernão de Quental e de sua mulher, Margarida de Matos, sendo esta quem ali mandou erguer uma ermida de invocação a Nossa Senhora da Conceição, em data que se desconhece. O templo apenas terá sido terminado após sua morte, pelos seus filhos Afonso de Matos de Quental e Jerónimo de Quental, decorria então o ano de 1544. Nessa altura, já ali estavam instalados os frades menores de São Francisco de Assis, vindos de Vila Franca do Campo para Ponta Delgada por volta de 1525, três anos após o sismo que destruiu aquela vila micaelense. Quando estes frades franciscanos manifestaram o interesse em se instalar em Ponta Delgada, pretensão bem acolhida pela governação local, foi-lhes indicado três locais possíveis para a instalação do cenóbio: a nascente, perto da Calheta de Pero de Teive, onde hoje se localiza a Cadeia da Boa Nova; a norte, num campo onde mais tarde os capitães do Donatário e futuros condes de Vila Franca levantariam o seu paço, sensivelmente onde agora está a Escola Secundária Antero de Quental; e, finalmente, a poente, junto à ermida de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, erguida por Margarida de Matos, o local escolhido.

These pictures were taken 21Feb2014 while I was in Lisbon, Portugal with my wife. If you happen to be traveling in that area, Santarem is an hour away from Lisbon towards Fatima. It is very easy to get there by bus and cost about 7 Euros roundtrip. If you are in Lisbon, take a taxi or city bus to Sete-Rios Bus Terminal as the video will show.
The physical address of the bus terminal in Lisbon is: Terminal Rodoviario de Sete Rios, Praca Marechal Humberto Delgado, Lisboa 1500-423 Portugal, Telephone: 707 223 344. Buy the ticket inside the terminal office of Sete-Rios and wait for the scheduled coach (long distance bus). There is an information office counter if in need of assistance.
If you are in Fatima, walk 5min to the bus station there behind the Church of the Holy Trinity. It will be on your left. The physical address is: Terminal Rodoviario de Fatima, Jose Alves Correia da Silva, Fatima 2495-402, Portugal. Telephone: 249 531 611.
Once you get to the Bus Terminal of Santarem, the Miracle Church is only a few blocks away. Walk across the park until you reach Rua Miguel Bombarda, turn right and the church is on your left. The physical address is: Largo do Milagre, Santarém 2000-069.
If you get lost, ask one of the locals for direction. It helps if you have the name of the church, or street written down. Better yet if you have a picture to show, of the place you want to visit, from your camera, ipad, or tablet....no words will be necessary.
Once you get inside the church, you must coordinate in the office. No pictures are allowed of the Miraculous Host, but you can purchase postcards, pamphlets, and books there. You will be in awe to see a bleeding host (Jesus' heart) that is very much alive. It has been in that state since the year 1266. Please be respectful and observe proper reverence since this is a place of worship and a major pilgrimage site. Google it for more information.

Sunsets that pour out from the sky over the biggest waves I've ever seen, unearthly hikes in the most serene and quiet forest I've ever felt, yes, you could literally FEEL the quiet...
Gardens where you could hear every flap of every pigeons wings, cobblestone streets, cows walking in the roads, farmers standing inches sometimes, from the village roads while drinking their beer or espressos, everything... slow.
Rain, so much rain! And Green! Everything green or blooming, the white, pink, blue and purple Hydrangeas as big as your head, bigger even sometimes....
Terceira island was one of the most sensory place I've ever been. I'm more blessed and lucky to have been able to spend a little time getting to know some of the people and places of this magical island in the middle of the North Atlantic. It was amazing.

Catedral de Angra do Heroismo on the Island of Terceira in the Azores
On a walking tour of the city of Angra do Heroismo, we first saw the Cathedral of Angra at a distance from the top of Jardim Duque da Terceira (Duke of Terceira Garden). Our guide then took us to the steps of the cathedral
Description:
The Angra do Heroísmo Cathedral is the biggest Temple and one of the main monuments of this lovely town, classified by UNESCO as World Heritage, situated in the gorgeous Terceira Island, on the Azores Archipelago.
The present temple would have been built over the previous São Salvador Church, dated probably from 1496, yet small for the prescent population of Angra do Heroísmo, that was by then affirming its power and expansion. From this previous temple is left the main altar.
In 1570 started the temple’s construction, in a majestic style, and in the 20th century several conservation works were made, as the natural catastrophes, namely the 1980 big earthquake and a big fire in 1984, caused serious harm in the building.
The Angra do Heroísmo Cathedral is characterized by its sober façade with two bell towers and presents a lovely interior with cedar sculpted ceiling, 17th century glazed tiles, furniture in jacaranda wood and the famous pipe organ with big dimensions.

Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island, is the capital of the Azores archipelago of Portugal. The striking, 3-arched city gates and the Gothic-style Church of St. Sebastian are near the harbor. The Convent and Chapel of Our Lady of Hope houses a revered image of Christ. The Carlos Machado Museum offers diverse artifacts of Azorean culture. The city is a gateway to the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, to the northwest.

I met some young people who showed me and Chilly around Furnas. An amazing village built inside the crater of an active volcano. Beautiful scenery, a lake, bubbling cauldrons and an amazing gothic church.
The locals are so proud of the lovely environment and the sight on they’re little island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
What started as an accidental surprise stop is turning into an adventure on an incredible piece of our planet.
Geographically as far from Australia as you can get, few Australian tourists visit this place which has many similarities to Australia especially with food and relaxed lifestyles.
I’m thrilled to find out that im the first Australian tourist encounter many locals have had.
