027: Riverside of Ribblesdale (Settle, Stainforth Force, Ribblehead Viaduct and Dentdale)
YORKSHIRE DALES WALK FEATURING SETTLE, STAINFORTH FORCE, RIBBLEHEAD VIADUCT AND DENTDALE
Riverside of Ribblesdale
Filmed 2nd September 2014
Running time: 15 minutes
At the start of September 2014 I spend a week in the wonderful Yorkshire Dales. During my first day I arrive in Settle and explore the Ribblesdale valley to the river's source. As with many places I visit I think back to the time when I made my very first trip to the Dales way back in 1988.
Filmed in the counties of North Yorkshire and Cumbria featuring Ribblesdale. Locations include Settle, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Ribblehead and Dentdale. This is the first film in the Yorkshire Dales.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.

NORTH YORK MOORS WALK FEATURING GOATHLAND, MALLYAN SPOUT AND WHEELDALE MOOR
Good Land of Goathland”
Filmed 9th September 2015
Running time: 20 minutes
The North York Moors is a new area for me as I’ve not really explored there properly before now. In September 2015 I spend a few days getting to know the region starting my tour in a village better known as the fictional “Aidensfield” in a certain TV series…..
Filmed in the county of North Yorkshire. Locations include Goathland, West Beck, Mallyan Spout and the Wheeldale Roman Road. This is the first film in the North York Moors.

I ALMOST DIED! Hiking into Hell in Horton-in-Ribblesdale
A trip I definitely won't forget in a hurry. 90mph winds, non stop rain, flash flooding, almost getting washed away into Hull Pot and shoe-horned into getting on a train, which I'm scared of. All in all, a trip full of firsts and pretty sure to be lasts.

Highgate Cemetery and Pub Walk - London Walking Tour
Highgate Cemetery and Pub Walk - London Walking Tour, including ghost stories, train robbers and other quirky stories.
Starting at Swains Lane called thus because of Pig herders from the 1300s driving swine down to Smithfields.
Sightings of the Highgate Cemetery Vampire were common in Swains Lane which is also a cycling mecca because of one of the steepest gradients in London.
The Beatles also had a famous photo taken here.
Highgate Cemetery - opened in 1839 (one of 7 cemeteries Parliament decided on) is home to Michal Faraday, Karl Marx, George Michael and Malcolm McLaren.
In the 1960s reports of blood drained animals and spectral sightings led to claims of a Highgate vampire.
Pond Square also has ghost stories, but one about a chicken! It is also where Sir Francis Bacon died and where many famous people lived like George Michael, Kate Moss, Terry Gilliam and Ray Davies all very nearby.
The Flask pub is a lovely inn. Hampstead was popular for its wells and you could buy flasks here back in the old days.
Dick Turpin, the highwayman, hid here when fleeing from the law and Hogarth drank here. So did Byron, Shelley, Keats and Coleridge who lived over the road. There is also a ghost of a Spanish Barmaid which haunts The Flask.
Other pubs include The Prince of Wales, Highgate Village, which has the hardest pub quiz in London!
Highgate School was founded in 1565 and in the chapel churchyard is buried Peter Heyward, one of the Bounty Mutineers.
The Gatehouse pub dates back to the 14th Century.
The Bishop of London owned the park and the name Highgate comes from the gates which provided access to the park that stretched down to The Spaniards Inn. The gate house was the toll gate and is the earliest recorded building in Highgate. There’s a boundary marker here too.
The Wrestlers is the oldest pub in Highgate still doing business.
Drunk people came to settle differences and fight. They liked high points for some reason, perhaps because places like Highgate had so many pubs. 16 pubs in total in Highgate which started up because they were on the sheep herders trail to London and people would stop to take a rest at the highest point. Maybe for the view!
The Wrestlers still have the Swearing on horns ceremony which even Lord Byron was famous for doing.
You must not eat brown bread while you can get white, except you like the brown the best. You must not drink small beer while you can get strong, except you like the small the best. You must not kiss the maid while you can kiss the mistress, except you like the maid the best, but sooner than lose a good chance you may kiss them both.
You would then become a freeman of Highgate.

Matlock Walks, Peak District Walks In Derbyshire, England, UK
Matlock Walks, Peak District Walks In Derbyshire, England, UK
Matlock Walks was about 7.25 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of field and woodland paths; some tracks and a riverside path; plus short road and lane sections. The walking easy on level ground or gentle gradients except for two steep ascents. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and god landmarks. There were 24 squeeze-stiles to go through and 12 stiles to climb over.

Harkerside Moor & Dent's Houses, Yorkshire Dales - 3 November 2017
A walk of just under 11 miles, the route starts just south of Grinton. Heading west the route climbs High Harker Hill and follows the ridgeline of Swaledale to Whitaside Moor before turning east just to the south of High Carl and joining Smithy Gill on Apedale Road to the crossroads of Dent's Houses. Here I visit Dent Houses, a hut provided by the Bolton Estate. From here the route heads north retuning to the start.
