Florida Keys Seven Mile Bridge Run 2018

The longest of 42 bridges over water that help comprise the Florida Keys Overseas Highway is the site of an annual footrace. On April 6, 2019, a field of 1,500 runners is to cross the span in the 38th edition of this world-renowned, unique event.

The footrace over the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico was established in 1982 to mark the completion of a project to build 37 new Keys bridges, which replaced converted railroad bridges constructed in the early 1900s by Florida developer Henry Flagler.

Just getting a chance to compete is challenging. The April contest has become one of the most popular running events in the southeastern United States.

2014 Seven Mile Bridge Run in the Florida Keys

MARATHON, Florida Keys— A South Florida college student won the overall men's title during Saturday's Seven Mile Bridge Run across the Florida Keys Overseas Highway's longest bridge.

Twenty-one year old Florida Atlantic University senior Josh Peterson, of Boca Raton, Fla., was top finisher among the race's 1,500 participants with a time of 39 minutes and 44 seconds. Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., resident Laura DiBella, 35, completed the course in 43:22 to place first in the women's division.

Peterson's college track and field coach Mike Stone, age 34, also of Boca Raton, and Marathon's Martin Sykut, 51, finished second and third in the men's division, with times of 39:49 and 40:46, respectively.

Helena Bursa, 38, of Big Pine Key, Fla., placed second in the women's division with a time of 44:58, nearly two minutes faster than her same-place finish in 2013. Key West resident Bethany Tietz, 37, finished third with a time of 47:47.

The well-known footrace was first staged in 1982 to mark the completion of a project to build 37 new Keys bridges to replace converted railroad bridges built in the early 1900s by Florida developer Henry Flagler.

The contest has become one of the most popular running events in the southeastern United States. Getting a chance to compete is the real contest. This year's field filled in under 10 minutes after online registration was activated in February.

The early morning race closed the Seven Mile Bridge to traffic for about two hours, but Monroe County Sheriff's Captain Don Hiller reported no major problems.

Florida Keys: Overseas Hywy & 7 Mile Bridge Aerial

The original roadway from the Mainland to Key West opened in 1928 as State Road 4A, however there was a 41 mile gap from Lower Matecumbe and No Name Keys. When the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 destroyed parts fo the Overseas Railroad, the bridges where retrofitted with concrete for vehicular traffice. In 1938 the highway opened as Route 1 and finally connected Key West with the Mainland.

The Seven Mile bridge is actually 6.79 miles and opened in 1982. The old bridge is now used for pedestrian and bicyclist traffic. In 2014 the Florida Department of Transportation approved a $77 Million plan to restore the old bridge.

We used the new X-Star Premium drone for this. We have done reviews on the picture quality which is much better than the Phantom . but this video was impressed with how it dealt with wind. At times we had very strong gusts of wind, probably about 25mph, and it the drone still remained very steady, and even against the wind was still able to maintain about 7-10mph.

The Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago located off the southern coast of Florida, forming the southernmost portion of the continental United States. They begin at the southeastern coast of the Florida peninsula, about 15 miles (24 km) south of Miami, and extend in a gentle arc south-southwest and then westward to Key West, the westernmost of the inhabited islands, and on to the uninhabited Dry Tortugas. The islands lie along the Florida Straits, dividing the Atlantic Ocean to the east from the Gulf of Mexico to the northwest, and defining one edge of Florida Bay. At the nearest point, the southern part of Key West is just 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba. The Florida Keys are between about 23.5 and 25.5 degrees North latitude.
The climate of the Keys is defined as tropical savanna according to Köppen climate classification. More than 95 percent of the land area lies in Monroe County, but a small portion extends northeast into Miami-Dade County, such as Totten Key. The total land area is 137.3 square miles (356 km2). As of the 2010 census the population was 73,090 with an average density of 532.34 per square mile (205.54/km2), although much of the population is concentrated in a few areas of much higher density, such as the city of Key West, which has 32% of the entire population of the Keys. The US Census population estimate for 2014 is 77,136.
The city of Key West is the county seat of Monroe County. The county consists of a section on the mainland which is almost entirely in Everglades National Park, and the Keys islands from Key Largo to the Dry Tortugas.
The Florida Keys are the exposed portions of an ancient coral reef. The northernmost island arising from the ancient reef formation is Elliott Key, in Biscayne National Park. North of Elliott Key are several small transitional keys, composed of sand built up around small areas of exposed ancient reef. Further north, Key Biscayne and places north are barrier islands, built up of sand.
The Florida Keys have taken their present form as the result of the drastic changes in sea level associated with recent glaciations or ice ages. Beginning some 130,000 years ago the Sangamonian Stage raised sea levels to approximately 25 feet (7.5 m) above the current level. All of southern Florida was covered by a shallow sea. Several parallel lines of reef formed along the edge of the submerged Florida plateau, stretching south and then west from the present Miami area to what is now the Dry Tortugas. This reef formed the Key Largo limestone that is exposed on the surface from Soldier Key (midway between Key Biscayne and Elliott Key) to the southeast portion of Big Pine Key and the Newfound Harbor Keys. The types of coral that formed Key Largo limestone can be identified on the exposed surface of these keys.
Starting about 100,000 years ago the Wisconsin glaciation began lowering sea levels, exposing the coral reef and surrounding marine sediments. By 15,000 years ago the sea level had dropped to 300 to 350 feet (110 m) below the contemporary level. The exposed reefs and sediments were heavily eroded. Acidic water, which can result from decaying vegetation, dissolves limestone. Some of the dissolved limestone redeposited as a denser cap rock, which can be seen as outcrops overlying the Key Largo and Miami limestones throughout the Keys. The limestone that eroded from the reef formed oolites in the shallow sea behind the reef, and together with the skeletal remains of bryozoans, formed the Miami limestone that is the current surface bedrock of the lower Florida peninsula and the lower keys from Big Pine Key to Key West. To the west of Key West the ancient reef is covered by recent calcareous sand.
Just offshore of the Florida Keys along the edge of the Florida Straits is the Florida Reef (also known as the Florida Reef Tract). The Florida Reef extends 270 km from Fowey Rocks just east of Soldier Key to just south of the Marquesas Keys. It is the third-largest barrier reef system in the world

bicycling from Homestead to Marathon FL, 7 Mile Bridge

Card Sound Road is a tragedy waiting to happen. There are only 2 options to ride a bike into Key Largo. Card Sound Road or US1. Card Sound Road is the recommended route by the Adventure Cycling Association. Currently, there is alot of construction on US1, but I've heard that they are adding shoulders. US1 will always have much more traffic, but with shoulders, it might be safer than Card Sound Road. The conditions are hazardous and dangerous.

I depart Homestead FL and ride to Key Largo and on to Marathon, including bicycling on the 7 Mile Bridge

MARATHON, Florida Keys — South Florida resident Josh Peterson claimed his third consecutive overall men’s title during Saturday’s 35th annual Seven Mile Bridge Run across the Florida Keys Overseas Highway’s longest bridge.

Peterson, 23, of Boca Raton finished first among 1,500 participants in 38 minutes and 57 seconds.

Laura DiBella, 37, of Fernandina Beach, Fla., completed the course in 43:00, also her third consecutive overall women’s division title.

Michael Stone, 36, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., finished second in the men’s division with a time of 39:27. High school student Ryan Vanorman, 16, of Rockford, Mich., placed third at 39:38.

In her third bridge run endeavor, Morgan Hull, 20, an engineering student in Gainesville, Fla., placed second in the women’s division at 43:19. Race veteran Helena Bursa, 40, of Big Pine Key, Fla., placed third with her personal best time on the course of 43:51.

Begun in 1982, the now notable footrace over the convergence of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico marked the completion of a project to build 37 new Keys bridges to replace converted railroad bridges constructed in the early 1900s by Florida developer Henry Flagler.

The run closed the span between the Middle and Lower Keys for just over two hours Saturday morning, but race organizers and Keys officials publicized the event well in advance to minimize traffic problems, according to Lt. Derek Paul of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is part of the Overseas Highway in the Keys, which is part of the 2,369-mile (3,813 km) U.S. Route 1.

There are two bridges in this location. The modern bridge is open to vehicular traffic; the older one only to pedestrians and cyclists. The older bridge, originally known as the Knights Key-Pigeon Key-Moser Channel-Pacet Channel Bridge, was constructed from 1909 to 1912 under the direction of Henry Flagler and Clarence S. Coe as part of the Florida East Coast Railway's Key West Extension, also known as the Overseas Railroad.

After the railroad was damaged by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, the line was sold to the United States government, which refurbished Seven Mile Bridge for automobile use. Unsupported sections were added in 1935 to widen it for vehicular traffic. Dismantled trackage was recycled, painted white, and used as guardrails. It had a swing span to allow passage of boats in the Moser Channel of the Intracoastal Waterway, near where the bridge crosses Pigeon Key, a small island that held a work camp for Flagler's railroad. Hurricane Donna in 1960 caused further damage.

The current road bridge was constructed from 1978 to 1982.

The vast majority of the original bridge still exists, although the swing span has been removed. The 2.2-mile section to Pigeon Key, used as a fishing pier and long open to motorized vehicles to give access to the key, was closed to motorized traffic in 2008 after the unsupported sections began to sag. In 2014, the Florida Department of Transportation approved a $77 million plan to restore the old bridge. By 2017 the pedestrian section was closed, with extensive repairs predicted to be finished by about late 2021.
