River Severn flooding in Shropshire

4K. PART 1 OF VIDEO.
Shrewsbury is is the county town of Shropshire, England. The town is on the River Severn.
It is a market town whose centre has a largely unspoilt medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. The town is the birthplace of Charles Darwin and is where he spent 27 years of his life.
Shrewsbury can be found 9 miles (14 km) east of the Welsh border, and it serves as the commercial centre for Shropshire and mid-Wales, with a retail output of over £299 million per year and light industry and distribution centres, such as Battlefield Enterprise Park, on the outskirts.
The A5 and A49 trunk roads come together as the town's by-pass, and five railway lines meet at Shrewsbury railway station.
The town is located 150 miles (240 km) north-west of London, far enough away from the Smoke to be interesting.
Shrewsbury's known history commences in the Early Middle Ages, having been founded c. 800 AD. It is believed that Anglo-Saxon Shrewsbury was most probably a settlement fortified through the use of earthworks comprising a ditch and rampart, which were then shored up with a wooden stockade. There is evidence to show that by the beginning of the 900s, Shrewsbury was home to a mint.
The Welsh besieged it in 1069, but were repelled by William the Conqueror. Roger de Montgomery was given the town as a gift from William, and built Shrewsbury Castle in 1074, taking the title of Earl. He founded Shrewsbury Abbey as a Benedictine monastery in 1083. The 3rd Earl, Robert of Bellême, was deposed in 1102 and the title forfeited, in consequence of rebelling against Henry I and joining the Duke of Normandy's invasion of England in 1101. In 1138, King Stephen successfully besieged the castle held by William FitzAlan for the Empress Maud during the period known as the Anarchy.
It was in the late Middle Ages (14th and 15th centuries) when the town was at its height of commercial importance. This was mainly due to the wool trade, a major industry at the time, with the rest of Britain and Europe, especially with the River Severn and Watling Street as trading routes. The Shrewsbury Drapers Company dominated the trade in Welsh wool for many years.
In 1403 the Battle of Shrewsbury was fought a few miles north of the town centre, at Battlefield. It was fought between King Henry IV and Henry Hotspur Percy, with the King emerging victorious, an event celebrated in William Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1, Act 5.
Shrewsbury has also played a part in Western intellectual history, by being the town where the naturalist Charles Darwin was born and raised. The town is also home to the Ditherington Flax Mill, the world's first iron-framed building, which is commonly regarded as the grandfather of the skyscraper. Its importance was officially recognised in the 1950s, resulting in it becoming a Grade I listed building.
Shrewsbury, in the Industrial Revolution was also on the Shrewsbury Canal, which linked it with the Shropshire Canal and the rest of the canal network of Great Britain. Despite this, Shrewsbury escaped much of the industrialisation taking place in 19th century Britain due to its isolation from other large manufacturing towns and ports.

4K video of the Worcester Floods late October 2019 - River Severn - England
This 4K video is about the floods along the banks of the River Severn in Worcester. The video was taken late October 2019. If we had gone out the night before there would have been a lot more water. Every year the River Severn spills over into the flood plains along its banks. At this time of year the night are closing in and getting out after work to take shots before the sun disappears can be tricky. We love where we live, but tend to take it for granted. Maybe we should do more local videos. Please comment, and if you want us to take anything in our area let us know.

Shropshire flooding: Cars under water as River Severn levels peak
Red alert flood warning are in place across Shropshire and the Welsh borders today after the weekend's torrential rain.
Flood defences are up in Shrewsbury and Ironbridge and caravan owners on riverside sites in Bridgnorth are being warned about possible flooding as the River Severn peaks there tomorrow morning.
Shropshire and the Midlands were the worst hit by the weekend's weather, with rain in the Welsh hills adding to that falling on saturated ground in the county.
All riverside footpaths remain flooded while parts of the Quarry park are covered in water, along with Frankwell car park which is fully closed and St Julian’s Friars car park which is partially shut.
Vehicles have been left stranded in both car parks, as well as next to the tennis courts off Town Walls, with some almost fully submerged.
The Environment Agency has issued 82 flood warnings and 117 flood alerts, with a dozen of the red flood warnings on the Vyrnwy and Severn in the region. There is also a flood warning on the River Dee south of Llangollen and a flood alert for the River Teme near Ludlow and Clun.

Bridgnorth Drone Footage
Check out some aerial footage of the recent floods at Knowlesands near Bridgnorth. Filmed with a DJI Mavic Air drone Autumn day in October 2019.
About Knowlesands
Knowlesands is a small village along the Bridgnorth to Highly Rd consisting of a few houses, caravan parks and the popular Swan Inn.
On the banks of the River Severn, Knowlesands is a very popular site for fishing and walking.
Personally - having lived all over the world - I love this place and feel so lucky to wake up most mornings to this misty view. It's amazing how many people stop by the roadside to photograph and watch the cows in the mist.
Hope you enjoy the video. If you want something to compare the floods too - check out this recent video f the same area of Bridgnorth -

1980: Bridgnorth street scenes, Castle, SVR, Cliff Railway, the river Severn
The boys spend a day in Bridgnorth in 1980. We walk along the river, around the alleys and steep streets, seeing all the beautiful old buildings, including Bishop Percy's House, home of the Bridgnorth Boys Club from the 1940s until 2003. The Old Town Hall, people painting the black and white timbered buildings, St Mary's Church, the Castle and park. Then Dad just had to spend some time watching the trains on the Severn Valley Railway at Bridgnorth Station. Then more wandering around, we see some of the old metal insurance plaques mounted on the walls of buildings, which are probably long gone now 40 years later. A quick sit down, and then it's back to the river and a ride on the cliff railway, with wondeful views across the bridge and the River Severn.

4K video. A walk to Diglis Basin, where the Worcester and Birmingham Canal meets the River Severn.
This is a 4K video of a walk to Diglis Basin. Diglis Basin sits where the canal meets the River Severn in the city of Worcester. We walked along the Worcester and Birmingham Canal on Sunday, one of the sunny days in November 2019. We passed the Commandery, the Royalist Headquarters during the deciding battle of the English Civil War – the Battle of Worcester 1651. There is more to this area, but as you will see the Severn was still in flood therefore some areas were inaccessible. You will notice the water overspilling the towpath after lock one. The area around the Basin has gone through a transformation developing the space, turning it from a derelict wasteland into what you see today. The development to the right as we approach the Basin is the now transformed Royal Porcelain Works.
