Iran - Kharanaq, Chak Chak & Meybod
We drove through the desert through a mostly beautiful lunar landscape to Yazd via Kharanaq, Chak Chak and Meybod. Kharanaq is an old deserted village of mud houses. Some buildings have been restored in a peculiar way, but no one lives there. Chak Chak is a Zoroastrian pilgrimage site. This religion existed before Islam and still has supporters in Iran. Meybod has a big mud castle, but because we wanted to be in Yazd before dark we only saw it from the outside.
We visited Iran on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our playlist

LEAD IN
In ancient times, Iran''s travelling merchants would stop at caravanserais, to rest, sleep and eat.
Built in a distinct architectural style, caravanserais are said to have been the first types of hotels in ancient Iran.
STORYLINE
After a long day''s journey through the desert, travellers in ancient Iran would usually spend the night at a caravanserai.
A type of roadside inn, caravanserais were built on main trade routes so that caravans or convoys could manage to pass from one caravanserai to the next every day.
The term caravanserai is a combination of caravan and the Persian word ''sara'', which means dwelling.
Caravan in Persian means a convoy of camels or similar animals, merchants, pilgrims or any other kind of traveller and their belongings.
The dry and scorching climate in many parts of the country and far distances between towns and cities made the existence of these resting places inevitable.

La cittadella Narin Qal'eh, Iran - Toscaniviaggiatori.it
