Searching for Shakespeare: The Dig at New Place, Stratford upon Avon
Director of Learning and Research at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Paul Edmondson invites the University of Warwick's Professor Carol Rutter to explore the new archaeological dig in the grounds of William Shakespeare's last home, New Place in Stratford upon Avon.
The project aims to locate any remains of the 16th century house and discover what life was like for the bard and his family. The film provides a first look at some of the finds discovered on the site including evidence of Tudor life that may have been owned by Shakespeare himself.
Professor Rutter is Director of the CAPITAL Centre and Professor of English in the Deaprtment of English and Comparative Literary Studies. Her main teaching and research areas lie in Shakespeare and performance studies.
The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust was formed in 1847 and aims to promote the appreciation and study of the plays and other works of William Shakespeare and general advancements of Shakespearian knowledge, it has an extensive library and archive relating to the life and times of the bard as well as caring for the historical houses connected to the famous playwright.

The Royal Shakespeare Company performs his plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and adjacent Swan Theatre on the banks of the River Avon.
Stratford upon Avon is a market town and civil parish in Warwickshire, England, on the River Avon, 101 miles (163 km) north west of London, 22 miles (35 km) south east of Birmingham, and 8 miles (13 km) south west of Warwick. Stratford was originally inhabited by Anglo-Saxons and remained a village before lord of the manor, John of Coutances, set out plans to develop it into a town in 1196. In that same year, Stratford was granted a charter from King Richard I to hold a weekly market in the town, giving it its status as a market town. As a result, Stratford experienced an increase in trade and commerce as well as urban expansion.

❤ 1616 - After his death the house passed to his daughter Susanna Hall, and then his granddaughter, Elizabeth Hall
❤ After Elizabeth died, the house was returned to the Clopton family
❤ 1702 - John Clopton radically altered, or rebuilt, the original New Place
❤ 1756 - then-owner Reverend Francis Gastrell, having become tired of visitors, attacked and destroyed a mulberry tree in the garden said to have been planted by Shakespeare

SHAKESPEARE TOUR | Stratford Upon Avon
After a wonderful nights stay in the Beautiful Bedrooms by Fuller's at The White Swan ( it was finally time to hit the history trails of Stratford Upon Avon exploring the Shakespeare Tour, and it didn’t disappoint. First Shakespeare's birthplace, it’s been a pilgrimage site for over 400 years and the stories that it can tell through its amazingly preserved features.
Next Shakespeare's New Place. A chance to walk in Shakespeare’s footsteps and through gardens which Autumn had taken a strong loving hand over. Finally the royal theatre, the true heartbeat of Stratford. The stunning tutor streets throughout the days walks were really bring out my inner architecture nerd!!
The gorgeous medieval Holy Trinity Church on the riverbank the highlight of our excursions; resting place of Shakespeare himself and with a stunning vaulted ceiling. The perfect spot for a moment of peace and reflection.
And finally, Anne Hathaway's Cottage. A perfectly kept piece of history and a look into Shakespeare's wife's family home.
Stratford-Upon-Avon, we will be back so very soon!!

Stratford-upon-Avon, Home Town of William Shakespeare
Stratford-upon-Avon is an historic town on the river Avon in the English county of Warwickshire, best known as the home town of the great English playwright and poet, William Shakespeare. Today, it is a major theater-going destination as the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company. As such, it represents one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
Stratford-upon-Avon has its origins in the Saxon culture of medieval England (the name straet-ford indicates that it was a river crossing). For many centuries it was little more than a small market town on the road to London; even today, it has only 24,000 permanent residents. Though it has developed some industrial capacity, Stratford is now known mostly for its association with Shakespeare. The town benefits tremendously from the resulting tourism and cultural activity, and has gone to great lengths to preserve those buildings that have survived since Shakespeare's time. As a result the centre of town is quaint and attractive, drawing many thousands of tourists each year to its cultural and historical amenities.
Cycling is a great way to see Stratford and the surrounding area. The Stratford Greenway is 5 miles of traffic free cycle track just on the edge of town. Stratford upon Avon is a small compact town and it is very easy to walk to all the shops and attractions. The daily guided Stratford Town Walk passes the major attractions, including a visit to Holy Trinity Church. This is a good way of understanding the layout of the town. There is also an open top bus tour taking in some of the town centre. It then travels out of town in the local countryside to see Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Shottery and Mary Arden's House in Wilmcote.
