The Ancient Fortress of Shali - Siwa Oasis, Egypt
The Ancient Fortress of Shali is walking distance from most hotels in Siwa Oasis. The fortress is in ruins and slowely, m-e-l-t-i-n-g...since it was built of rock, salt, mud brick and palm leaves. You can still see palm leaves and trunks sticking out of the walls.
At one time, 20,000-30,000 persons lived inside these walls which is astounding when I think that my suburb, spread out over miles has a population of 35,000. The Siwans must had lived on top of each other. Dramatically lit at night, there are wonderful views at the top of Siwa Oasis and the surrounding desert.

siwa 2/3
The Siwa Oasis (Arabic: واحة سيوة Wāḥat Sīwah, Siwi Isiwan) is an oasis in Egypt, located between the Qattara Depression and the Egyptian Sand Sea in the Libyan Desert, nearly 50 km (30 mi) east of the Libyan border, and 560 km (348 mil) from Cairo.[1][2][3] About 80 km (50 miles) in length and 20 km (12 mi) wide,[1] Siwa Oasis is one of Egypt's isolated settlements, with 23,000 people, mostly ethnic Berbers[1] who speak a distinct language of the Berber family known as Siwi. Its fame lies primarily in its ancient role as the home to an oracle of Amon, the ruins of which are a popular tourist attraction which gave the oasis its ancient name Ammonium. Historically, it is part of Ancient Libya. Its modern name Siwa, first attested in the 15th century (earlier Arab geographers termed it Santariyyah), is of uncertain origin. Basset [4] links it to a Berber tribal name swh attested further west in the early Islamic period, while Ilahiane,[5] following Chafik, links it to the Tashelhiyt Berber word asiwan, a type of prey bird, and hence to Amon-Ra, one of whose symbols was the falcon.
Agriculture is the main activity of modern Siwi, particularly the cultivation of dates and olives. Handicrafts like basketry are also of regional importance.[1] Tourism has in recent decades become a vital source of income. Much attention has been given to creating hotels that use local materials and play on local styles.

Siwa -- Egypt Adventures I Queen13
HELLOOOO welcome back to my channel. Today's video isn't a normal sit down video It's a kinda vloggish wanderlust type of video. I have recently visited Siwa which is a small village or rather island located in Egypt . It is all built on water and salt . It's known for its Hot springs And Salt Lakes .Visiting this place was such a great pleasure and a great experience . The people there were so kind and fun and Siwa has so many ancient places and ruins which were wonderful to see and walk on the steps and floors that all those great people have walked on before . I loved this trip and overall the place and I would absolutely recommend going there if you are able to.

Ancient fortress being restored with EU help
(19 Mar 2019) LEADIN:
The ancient fortress of Shali in Egypt is rising from the ashes.
The uninhabited 13th century citadel has been given a cash injection by the European Union for restoration works.
STORYLINE:
Above the streets of Siwa sits the Shali fortress.
And work is underway to restore this ancient structure to its former glory.
Workers carry stone and mud as they rebuild its crumbling walls.
It has been abandoned for several decades but was once considered impregnable.
The fortress served as protection against foreign tribes as Siwa became a trading place for desert caravans.
This renovation project is only possible thanks to funding of up to 540,000 euros (610,000 US dollars) by the European Union.
And it's being carried out by EQI (Environmental Quality International), a company specialising in sustainable development.
Bakreen Ibrahim is the site manager.
It is important for us to protect our heritage, as well as our natural resources and traditions. Every city has a symbol, and we are proud that Shali is the symbol of the green oasis of Siwa, he says.
This unique site is a lasting memory of Siwa's Berber identity.
And workers are using traditional construction methods to repair it.
Entirely natural and local, kershef is a mixture of salt rock and mud.
Once dry, it takes on its final colour, blending completely into the landscape of the oasis.
This is mud, water, and kershef. The kershef looks like a stone brick, it comes from the lake, says Ibrahim.
We don't add anything else in kershef buildings.
This material is ideal for the desert climate. It keeps cool in summer and warm in winter.
But it is not resistant to time.
In 1926, heavy rains caused severe damage to the fortress.
The inhabitants then left the old town, and the materials were sometimes reused to build houses elsewhere.
But repairing the fortress could mean a bright new future for the area, attracting tourists and their money.
Suleiman Abdallah Mohammad, head of the Centre for Documentation on Cultural and Natural Heritage in Siwa, sees it as a potential cultural hub.
For craftsmen, those who carve wood, make objects using the palms, pottery, embroidery, and silver work, he says.
It will become a market place and an open-air museum for everyone. For the skilled hands and the people who buy, it will become an open market for the entire world.
A mural shows the ramparts of the original fortress on the central square of Siwa.
The inhabitants hope to see it with their own eyes. The renovation is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
