#Facts
1. The Shalimar Gardens were laid out as a #Persian #paradise garden intended to create a representation of an earthly utopia in which humans co-exist in perfect harmony with all elements of nature.
2. The architecture of Shalimar is incredible with its oblong parallelogram shape which is covered from all sides with a high brick wall. Construction of the gardens began in 1641 during the reign of Emperor Shah Jahan and was completed in 1642.
3. Shalimar means ‘abode of light’ or ‘moonlight’.
4. The gardens span 80 acres, a 100-mile-long canal built to bring water from the foothills of Kashmir to the site, 200 feet above the ground against the gravity to supply water to fountains.
5. There are in total 410 fountains with waters flowing into marble pools. Such is the creativity that went into the making of the water systems and thermal engineering that the scientists even today are unable to gauge the designs from the blueprints.

viii) 2 Gateways &
ix) Minarets situated at the corners of the garden.
7. The terraces are at a height of about 5 meters one above the other with a same level of distance. All the 3 terraces have their specific names:
i) The top terrace is known as ‘Farah Baksh’ means ‘Bestower of Pleasure’.
ii) The mid level garden ‘Faiz Baksh’ means of ‘Bestower of Goodness’.
iii) The lower garden ‘Hayat Baksh’ means ‘Bestower of Life’.
