Farm Sanctuary in Acton, California
Tippi Hedren of the Roar Foundation and the Shambala Preserve introduced by Mariana Tosca
The Roar Foundation, founded in 1983 by Tippi Hedren, exists solely to support the Shambala Preserve. Their mission is to educate the public about the dangers of private ownership of exotic animals. Huge numbers of dangerous animals are bred and sold in the United States for illegal purposes. Private ownership presents a grave danger to the public and is cruel and unfair. More stringent legislation is needed to prohibit breeding and selling. They are actively involved on federal as well as state levels.
Shambala is home to more than 70 big cats: lions, tigers, cougars, black and spotted leopards, servals, bobcats, Asian leopard cats, a jungle cat, a lynx, and one very magnificent liger. All have come to the Preserve after confiscation by authorities such as California Fish and Game, the United States Department of Agriculture, the ASCPA, and various Humane Societies. They are from roadside zoos and private citizens who realize that they have purchased an animal that they can no longer handle. The exotic cat trade is a huge business, just under illegal drugs, according to U.S. Fish and Wildlife.
Once an animal is brought to Shambala, it remains there for the rest of its life. As a true sanctuary, they do not buy, breed, sell, trade, or subject our animals to commercial use. Their only purpose is to allow these magnificent animals to live out their lives with love and dignity. Each Wild One has the best human, nutritional, medical, emotional, and mental care possible.

Shambala's - Jiang the Jumper!
Brought to you by Terri Keefer (Black Leopard Kara's adoptive Mother).
On January 6, 2007, Jiang impressed all adoptive parents by jumping high in the sky for his femur bone!
Shambala is Tippi Hedren's baby... sitting at the tip of the Mojave Desert in California. It's a wild animal preserve serving as a haven for endangered exotic big cats. Most of them were pets at one time and have never lived in the wild.
Tippi has created an amazing sanctuary that provides a dignified life for these wonderful creatures. In the words of Tippi Hedren, it is part of her mission to rescue exotic feli
nes born in the United States to be sold as pets.
Go to Shambala.org and check out what she has created.
It is an honor for me to be part of her Shambala family.

DV Tiger Mauling
HEADLINE: Hedren: Tiger mauling was 'a terrible shock'
CAPTION: A worker at Tippi Hedren's California animal sanctuary remains in intensive care after he was bitten in the neck while cleaning a tiger's enclosure. Hedren says she doesn't know what set the tiger off, but says It's not his fault.'' She blames the people who illegally breed tigers as pets. She rescued this tiger from one of these facilities in 2003. (Dec. 4)
[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
Alexander the tiger was keeping a close watch on media gathered around his fenced in compound Tuesday.
The male Bengal tiger attacked a caretaker Monday here at the Shambala Preserve, a wild animal sanctuary about 40 miles Northeast of Los Angeles operated by actress Tippi Hedren.
(Upsound worker Jesus Torres....)
Jesus Torres was in the caged pen with caretaker Chris Orr when the 450-pound tiger suddenly, without warning, came at Orr.
It was Torres who pulled his badly injured co-worker to safety.
SOT: Jesus Torres, caretaker, Shambala Preserve.
Hedren told reporters that Orr was airlifted Monday from the animal compound and is listed in critical but stable condition.
SOT: Tippi Hedren, founder, Shambala Preserve.
Hedren says this is the first such attack at Shambala since she founded the shelter in the early 1970's.
The sanctuary is now home to more than 60 big cats, including tigers, lions and leopards...many of them, she says, bred illegally in captivity.
SOT: Hedren
California state officials are investigating the tiger attack.
Hedron says new safety measures are being considered for Shambala's big cat caretakers to prevent another attack from happening again.

California wildfire: 10,000 homes evacuated from path of Sand Fire
A wildfire north-west of Los Angeles has forced the evacuation of some 10,000 homes as it expands across a rugged 51 sq-mile (132 sq-km) zone, fuelled by high winds and hot weather.
Helicopters are being used to tackle the blaze, nicknamed the Sand Fire, which broke out near Santa Clarita, 40 miles (65km) from Los Angeles.
The fire has destroyed more than a dozen homes in three days.
Nearly 3,000 firefighters are working to contain the blaze.
Officials said only 10% of the fire was under control.
This is the fifth year of an ongoing drought, so we have very extreme fire behaviour, Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby told reporters. These are not normal times.
Fire crews have also been hampered by the forested, mountainous terrain.
Over the weekend, a body was found in a burned-out car but it is not clear if the death is fire-related.
A wildlife preserve owned by actress Tippi Hedren, who starred in the Hitchcock classic The Birds, has also been evacuated. Hedren's daughter, actress Melanie Griffith, tweeted that her mother and the 40 big cats at the Shambala Preserve were safe.
Forecasters say there could be some relief in sight with cooler temperatures due to move in.
Firefighters are also struggling to contain a blaze further north, in mountains near Big Sur.
This wildfire, spanning more than 23 sq miles (59.6 sq km), forced the evacuation of more than 1,000 homes in the communities of Palo Colorado and Carmel Highlands.

Mountain Lion in Acton Photo & Video montage 08/28/2015
Here are some photos and videos that I took after the mountain lion was tranquilized by the fish & wildlife game warden. She was about 2&1/2 years old and from my perspective, about 80-90 pounds. The guy in the black shirt is one of the owners of L&J Automotive, who got knocked over as he opened the door to the shop to open for the day. The cougar was hit with a tranquilizer dart and sucame to the sedative in the yard of Casa Bellas Fountains & Statutes. She was eventually loaded onto the back of the game warden's truck and taken to be set free in the Angeles National Forest.

As someone who has worked on television, film, and in theater productions for decades, I have been conditioned, or better said, us in the entertainment industry have been conditioned to work long hours. It has been and is commonplace. Please don’t mistake being conditioned for acceptance or anything other than having to do the work you’re hired for when it is available. And that means we don’t go home until the job is done. Not after eight hours. Not after ten. Usually not after 12 even, and sometimes not for days at a time with little if any sleep at all. And this could be for many months at a time.
This is one of the few industries where you will work with a group of total strangers under stressful and sometimes even life-threatening conditions to create and deliver a product on time. Film and television production can be a dangerous business. Untimely disasters have plagued Hollywood sets since as early as the 1920s. Half of all film-related fatalities to cast and crew are associated with stunt work where timing is critical. And all too often, budgetary factors drive demanding schedules and sometimes compromise the safety of those on set.
This is why there are often many comparisons with military operations because of these factors and an exact attention to detail for delivery.
While a large majority of you watching this may not be directly involved in any stunt work throughout your time in the Hollywood trenches, things still do happen. And in many cases are entirely avoidable.
On February 20, 2014, 27-year-old camera assistant Sarah Jones lost her life when a train struck her during production. 42-year-old hairstylist Joyce Gilliard and another crewmember were also injured shooting the independent biopic about Gregg Allman.
Director Randall Miller moved the shoot from the land beside the Altamaha River in Wayne County, Georgia onto a narrow trestle, which is still used, by trains. While crewmembers were on the trestle, a voice shouted to the crew that they would have 60 seconds to clear the track if a train appeared.
The track’s owners, CSX Transportation, had denied the production company permission to shoot on the tracks on two occasions. The film’s director, Miller, producers Jody Savin, and Jay Sedrish, and first assistant director Hillary Schwartz, have been indicted in criminal proceedings and pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and criminal trespass. Miller, Savin, Sedrish and other individuals and entities associated with the film have several civil suits filed against them.
Miller was charged with criminal trespass and involuntary manslaughter on March 9, 2015, and is the first filmmaker to go to prison for a film-related death, after negotiating a plea agreement with the District Attorney for two years in jail and eight years probation.
My deepest condolences to the Jones family. You have our sympathies.
You have to BE VIGILANT and ALWAYS make a conscious decision on whether your workplace is a safety hazard or not. It is up to YOU. Make educated choices and act upon them. If something doesn’t seem right, chances are they are not. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and point out something that may be out of place that can cause injury or loss of life.
