Shan State Travel Guide
Travel video about destination Shan State in Myanmar.
North of Burma’s central plains is the exotic and fascinating Shan State, a beautiful landscape in South East Asia located on the eastern side ofMyanmar. Once 40 Shan monarchs ruled there but they lived in hostile times as Burmese kings and Chinese warlords fought against them to gain control of their fertile land.We begin our journey at Inle Lake. The magical beauty of this body of water has attracted and fascinated people since time immemorial and this unique lake is home to the Intha people. The next leg of the journey leads to a far more tranquil section of the lake that features floating gardens that are around a hundred metres long and two metres wide and consist of a densely interwoven carpet of water hyancinths. Mandalay, ‘The City of Art’, is located in the centre of Shan State. It was founded in 1857 and up until the British conquered it in 1885, it was the capital of the kingdom of Burma. The Mahamuni Pagoda is the centre of worship and is also where the Mahamuni Buddha is kept, the country’s most highly worshipped Buddha statue. Around 12 kilometres beyond Hsipaw is the legendary Bagyo Pagoda. Surrounded by a magnificent wall, it is thought that the sanctuary is more than 700 years old. An important festival takes place each year around Tabaung, the time of the full moon in February and March, and is the highlight of the town’s cultural calendar. The Shan people in the north of Myanmar have most certainly retained their cultural heritage and Shan State is an exotic combination of both nature and culture and a land of beauty and joie de vivre!

Shan State Express Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Shan State Express in Myanmar.
The Shan State Express is the sonorous name of a unique train that travels to the north of Myanmar and to the legendary kingdom of the Shan. It passes through some of the most splendid scenery in South East Asia. We begin in the famous city of Mandalay that has a population of around a million and is a centre of Burmese art. Mandalay was founded around one hundred and fifty years ago and is therefore a relatively young metropolis. It owes its existence to an outstanding monarch, King Mindon who, wishing to escape from his kingdom’s turbulent past, had a brand new royal city built. The journey on the Shan State Express begins early in the morning in Mandalay Train Station. Immediately after leaving the city we encounter wonderful scenery that is strongly influenced by a remarkable backdrop of mountains and unspoiled Nature. The railroad travels in a zigzag up the mountains which enables it to negotiate severe slopes that would otherwise be impossible for it to climb vertically. With the arrival of the railroad an increasing number of small farming villages developed most of which were populated by the Shan. Accounting for around eight point five per cent of the total population, the Shan are the largest ethnic minority in Myanmar. Their culture has been a major contribution to the historical development of South East Asia. At numerous railway stations Westerners are sometimes a little wary of the various snacks on offer. When a tempting skewer of food suddenly turns out to be a grilled locust the appetite can sometimes disappear within seconds! The continuing journey on the Shan State Express travels once more into the countryside. Picturesque hills line the route that is close to a famous militarily name, the Burma Road. The Shan State is truly one of the most colourful areas in South East Asia. Due to the extended train route from Mandalay to Lashio the time is hopefully not far away when the poverty of this region will be replaced by a new era of well deserved prosperity.

Myanmar ( Burma ) with bicycle in Nyaung Shwe !
Nyaung Shwe is a town a few kilometers north of Inle Lake in the Shan State of Myanmar. It is located south of Sakangyi and southwest of Taunggyi. Bawrithat Pagoda lies in the southern part of the town.
Nyaung Shwe is the tourist hub for visiting Inle Lake. It consists of one main thoroughfare with numerous side streets and a few parallel roads. The main street has numerous shops, several restaurants, a few stupas, travel agencies and a market (located behind the storefronts). Near the end of this road, a bridge crosses the river channel near an impressive mirror-tiled stupa.
