China's Shandong Province enlarges its capital city Jinan
The State Council has approved a major administrative division adjustment in eastern China's Shandong Province. The prefecture-level city of Laiwu and all the areas under its jurisdiction have now been assigned to the adjacent city of Jinan, which is also the provincial capital. In other words, Laiwu now becomes a district of Jinan City, bringing its total number of districts to 10. Jinan's overall area is now just over 10,000 square kilometers, and it has a population of about 8.7 million people. The secretary-general of Shandong provincial government spoke about the reasons for the adjustment on Wednesday.
