Shandur Pass is famous around the world because the world’s highest ground of polo is there constructed at height of around 3738 meters from the level of sea & also called the “Roof of the world“. It is in the center of Gilgit and Chitral, the distance is 147 KM Chitral and 211 KM Gilgit. The top of Shandur Pass is flat, it is a plateau. It is situated in the Northern Areas of Pakistan and one of the most visited places of Pakistan by tourists all around the world including people from different cities of Pakistan.
As Shandur Pass is famous for its polo ground so it shows that how much importance the sport polo has at Shandur Pass. Polo is considered as the game played by the kings. Polo is a traditional game at Shandur Pass and it is played every year in the month of July from 5th July to 8th July. It is being played at Shandur Pass from many years and it played among the teams of Chitral and the teams of Northern Areas. The polo played at Shandur Pass is not the same one that is played at international level because it does not follow the same rules that are followed while playing polo on international basis. At Shandur Pass the polo is played without empires and rules and the game is based on certain agreed convention and throughout the game the music band is played that has beats of drums and the whole game is played at those beats. Also Here is the one of the biggest Lake called Shandur Lake.

Chitral to Gilgit city is 390 km. my travel Chitral to Gilgit road via Shandur. Motorcycle takes 12 hours to reach Gilgit Baltistan. 145 km road from Boni to Phander valley is not paved. It is a bumpy & dirt road but from Phander to Gilgit is in very good condition. The road is along the Chitral, Kunar, Mastuj and Gilgit Rivers. Beautiful High mountains, Landscapes, snowy peaks, Small Valleys along the River. Motorcycle rides are risky but easy to stop at any point. Kindly Feedback in comments. The Gilgit–Shandur Road is 212 km provincial highway of Gilgit-Baltistan linking Gilgit with Shandur.Major portion of the this road is located in District Ghizer .
Ghizer District comprises several beautiful valleys which includes Punial Valley, Gupis Valley, Yaseen Valley and Ishkoman Valley.
Ghizer District is the westernmost part of the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Its capital is Gahkuch. Ghizer is a crossroads between Gilgit and Chitral, and also to China andTajikistan via the Karambar Pass through Ishkomen/Darkut Yasin (which are connected via Shandur Pass). Ghizer is a multi-ethnic district and three major languages are spoken; shina, khowar and Burushaski. There are also Wakhi speakers in Ishkoman and some Tajiks.
District Ghizer is Northmost part of the Northern Areas and hence the extreme north of the country. It joins with Wakhan strip on its north-west, and China on its northern borders. On its west, there is Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; and on its east is situated Gilgit. Diamer District is on its south, which is again a part of the Northern areas. Gakuch is the capital of the Ghizer District. Gupis has been serving as a junction between yasin and phander valley. It is the central place from all valleys like phandar, yasin. poniyal etc. The valley is located between the world greatest mountain ranges i.e. hindukush and karakarum.

On The Way To Shandur Pass (Top) From Chitral Pakistan
The total distance is from Mastuj to Shandur is about 40 to 45 km. but it took us four hours to reach there.
And it was worth it. Although the road was rocky and all uphill but I believe it was much better road than the road we travelled the day before. It needed strong nerves to maneuver. Only 4×4 vehicles can go through this track as close to Shandur the track becomes rocky and ascending. Two interesting things that we saw while on our way to Shandur were Yaks (locally called Zho) and beautiful and untouched valley of Laspar. The vehicle has to be fit to travel such a distance in a dirt/rock track. Take your food along with you as there is not much available on the route, Shandur pass (12000 Feet) opens up in front of us it is flate plane about 20 kms with towering mountains on either side. There is a beautiful lake on one side and world’s highest polo ground in the center of the plate. It is one of the major mountain pass of Chitral-Gilgit-Baltistan.

Shandur Top (Urdu: شندور) is located in Ghizer District, Gilgit-Baltistan, in the northmost political entity of Pakistan.[2] It is often called the 'Roof of the World'. The top is flat, a plateau and can be crossed between late April and early November. The grade is very gradual, and the area is crossed by plentiful small streams during summer. The boundary line between Ghizer District of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan.[3]
During the annual 'Shandur Polo Festival,' which is organized by the Ministry of tourism Gilgit-Baltistan and the Tourism Corporation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (TCKP), there is a polo match played on Shandur Top between the teams of Chitral District and Gilgit District and Chitral District.
