Shanghai Vlog: JingAn Neighborhood Tour!

November 2, 15 & 16, 2014
Welcome to the JingAn District of Shanghai! While the neighborhood is probably most famous for its luxury shopping and the JingAn Temple, there's a lot more to see and do in the area.
For those who are interested, admissions into the Temple costs 50 RMB per person. If you walk east on Nanjing West Road from the Temple, you'll pass all the luxury shops inside Reel, Kerry Centre, Shanghai Centre, Plaza 66, Citic Square, and Westgate Mall. Most of the shops in these malls are out of our price range, but they house some fantastic food courts and good grocery stores. Our favorite food court is in the basement of Reel. If you're looking for imported groceries, check out Ole in the basement of Kerry Centre or City Shop in the basement of Shanghai Centre.
For more affordable shopping - Uniqlo, H&M, Marks & Spencer, Gap, Old Navy, American Eagle, and Sephora - go to the Nanjing West Road subway station on Line 2. This shopping area is on the opposite side of Nanjing West Road from JingAn Temple. There also lots of delicious restaurants in addition to Korean cosmetic shops on WuJiang Road just behind Nanjing West Road metro station. ;)
Finally, for more outdoor activities check out JingAn Park or JingAn Sculpture Park. JingAn Park is just across the street from JingAng Temple on Nanjing West Road. The Sculpture Park is on Shimen Er Road, near Beijing West Road.
Happy exploring!!

Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center Tour
The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center / 上海城市规划展示馆 is located on People's Square, Shanghai, adjacent to the municipal government building. The Exhibition Center is a six-storey building, with two basement levels, which displays Shanghai's urban planning and development. The focus of the exhibit is a large scale model of the entirety of urban Shanghai, showing existing buildings and approved future buildings. Other exhibits relate to Shanghai's history and planned development, including smaller scaled models focussing on particular areas of interest such as the Bund. The Exhibition Center also has space for temporary exhibitions with a wide range of subject matter.
The Exhibition Center was built as part of the re-development of parkland at the edge of People's Park and around People's Square in the 1990s and 2000s. The Park and Square together occupy what was once the Shanghai racecourse, and today still make up one of the largest open spaces in central Shanghai.
The building was designed by architect Ling Benli of the East China Architecture Design & Research Institute (ECADI), as a harmonious balance to the Grand Theatre, another contemporary building at the other end of People's Square. The Exhibition Center is 43 metres (141 ft) high, has a white aluminium panel cladding and a symbolic membrane structure roof.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a huge scale model of the city of Shanghai, showing all existing and approved buildings. Visitors can view the model from alongside or ascend to a gallery running around it for views from above.
The model is intended to represent the entire city, including all planned developments. However, a few support pillars penetrate the scale model. This means certain areas are missing from the model, and some views of the model are obscured by the columns.
Alongside the model is a small theatre room housing a 360° screen. The room plays a video giving the impression the viewer is flying through the Shanghai of the future, viewing notable locations including some of the Shanghai Expo 2010 pavilions.

Yu Garden. Shanghai, China
Yu Garden. Shanghai, China (2012).
Yuyuan Garden (Chinese: t 豫園, s 豫园, p Yù Yuán, lit. Garden of Happiness) is an extensive Chinese garden located beside the City God Temple in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai, China. It abuts the Yuyuan Tourist Mart and is accessible from the Shanghai Metro's Line 10 Yuyuan Garden Station.
A centerpiece is the Currow ancient stone (玉玲珑, Yù Línglóng), a porous 3.3-m, 5-ton boulder. Rumours about its origin include the story that it was meant for the imperial palace in Beijing, but was salvaged after the boat sank off Shanghai.
Yu Garden was first conceived in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan as a comfort for his father, the minister Pan En, in his old age. Pan Yunduan began the project after failing one of the imperial exams, but his appointment as governor of Sichuan postponed construction for nearly twenty years until 1577. The garden was the largest and most prestigious of its era in Shanghai, but eventually its expense helped ruin the Pans.
The garden was inherited by Zhang Zhaolin, Pan Yunduan's granddaughter's husband, and then passed to different owners. A section was briefly organised by Zhang Shengqu as the Academy of Purity and Harmony (清和书院, Qīng-Hé Shūyuàn) and the Ling Yuan (灵苑, Líng Yuàn, lit. Spirit Park), today's East Garden, was purchased by a group of local leaders in 1709. A group of merchants renovated the increasingly decrepit grounds in 1760 and in 1780 the West Garden was opened to the general public.
The gardens suffered damage numerous times during the 19th century. During the First Opium War, the British army used the Huxinting Teahouse as a base of operations for several days in 1842. During the Taiping Rebellion, the Small Swords Society ran its headquarters in the Dianchun Hall; by the time Qing troops recovered the garden, the original structures had nearly all been destroyed. They were damaged again by the Japanese in 1942 before being repaired by the Shanghai government from 1956 to 1961. They were opened to the public in 1961 and declared a national monument in 1982.

Travel China - Jìng’ān Temple in Shanghai
Jing'an Temple (Chinese: 静安寺; pinyin: Jìng'ān Sì; Shanghainese: Zin'ue Zy; literally: Temple of Peace and Tranquility) is a Buddhist temple on the West Nanjing Road in Shanghai, China. Jing'an District, where it is located, is named after the temple.
The temple was first built in 247 AD in the Wu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period of ancient China. Originally located beside the Suzhou Creek, it was relocated to its current site in 1216 during the Song Dynasty. The current temple was rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty but, during the Cultural Revolution, the temple was converted into a plastic factory. In 1983, it was returned to its original purpose and renovated with the Jing'An Pagoda completed in 2010.
