GRAPHIC IDEOLOGY: CULTURAL REVOLUTION PROPAGANDA FROM CHINA
July 22, 2017 to December 31, 2017
Working closely with UO faculty members and students in the Departments of the History of Art and Architecture, East Asian Languages and Literatures, and History, the JSMA is proud to present a special exhibition of Chinese Cultural Revolution propaganda posters. Drawn from a local private collection of great scope and quality, this installation celebrates the promised gift of a core selection of these historically important and visually compelling works and will provide a focus of study for a number of Fall 2017 classes and public programs. The exhibition grew out of a cataloguing project and smaller gallery installation undertaken last year by graduate students Kun Xie, Sangah Kim, Allie Mickle, and Esther Weng, and is augmented with further research and analysis by UO China specialists Roy Chan, Jenny Lin, and Ina Asim along with some of their graduate students.
The exhibition, catalogue, and programs are made possible with generous support from the WLS Spencer Foundation; the Coeta and Donald Barker Changing Exhibitions Endowment; the Harold and Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation; the Oregon Arts Commission, and the National Endowment for the Arts; a federal agency; JSMA Academic Support grants, and JSMA members.
The Art of Chinese Propaganda Posters
China's Cultural Revolution lasted from 1966 to 1976, and resulted in turmoil and upheaval for millions of its citizens. The Communist Party enforced sweeping social changes and used propaganda posters to promote them.
The posters have several reoccurring themes, including nature and the government's ability to tame and transform it, advancement through industrial production and mechanization, positioning women as key figures, and Chairman Mao himself.

Shanghai is a very accessible city. Below are the details of trains from Haining and Huzhou. The school may also provide a minibus service to a Shanghai airport after your placement, make sure you know where you’ll be dropped off and make use of the excellent (and cheap!) Shanghai metro to get to the centre.
Shanghai South Railway Station is on Line 1, Hongqiao Airport is on Line 2 and Line 10, and Pudong Airport is on Line 2
Things to see
There are lots of things to see and do in Shanghai, and websites like TripAdvisor and Smart Shanghai will be invaluable during your time there. Here’s a short list of some of the must-see attractions in Shanghai:
Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre– In my opinion the most fascinating place in Shanghai, I haven’t found anything in China to rival this unique museum. Just getting there transports the visitor to the underground scene of Shanghai under Mao. Finding the museum itself can be quite a daunting experience, but don’t give up! On arriving at the housing estate where the museum’s located, you’ll be directed by a security guard at the front gate to the basement of one of the buildings. The museum houses hundreds of salvaged propaganda posters, giving a technicolour lesson in the history and politics of China’s 20th There’s also an excellent shop where you can buy postcards, books or prints for family and friends.
Nightlife
Shanghai’s reputation as a party city is well deserved and you’ll find bars and clubs catering to all tastes. Smart Shanghai is a useful website where you can get taxi printouts with the address in Chinese of all Shanghai’s bars. Be careful of clubs offering free drinks, as spirits will occasionally be fake and leave you regretting the choice in the morning

Spent 2 months living and working in Shanghai, China. Got to meet and live with the most amazing people as well as visited some incredible and historic places. Stayed in an adorable apartment right in the city center, befriended people from all over the world, and got to fully immerse myself within the beautiful and rich Chinese culture.
