Shanghai's Best Bars! Drink in a jacuzzi on a rooftop!
Shanghai is home to some of the best bars in Asia. We team up with J Lou to spend the day hopping from bar to bar to create our list of the ultimate places to get your drink on. We hit up Speak Low, a venue that constantly has a spot in the World’s Top 50 bars list for a good reason. Featuring hidden doorways and a multi-level venue, Speak Low’s constant surprises and famous cocktails will never disappoint. VUE at Hyatt on the Bund offer their guests something a little different, the bar is known for its killer combination of one of the best views of the Pudong skyline and a jacuzzi. Honestly, what better way is there to enjoy a drink and a view than lounging in a jacuzzi? If you’re a jazz fan, you definitely need to go to the Jazz Bar at The Fairmont Peace Hotel, a Shanghai institute frequented by many heads of state that features an old-timers jazz band that can still play some pretty funky tunes. People 7 is a must go if you’re up for some delicious fusion food and a night filled with some of the most creative drinks we’ve ever seen, this bar definitely keeps you coming back for more. Last but not least, one of the best places in Shanghai to grab a drink and watch the sunset over the Puxi skyline has to be Flair sitting high on top of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pudong. Featuring a gorgeous open balcony and an extensive drinks menu, it’s the ultimate spot to capture Shanghai at its best. It’s all here in our latest episode of Top Picks, our original travel videos series where we list our favourite foods and things to do from all over the world.

To my surprise, the music was awesome at most venues.
Before you go out make sure to install the ExpressVPN app, otherwise you'll not be able to use Google Maps, which is a necessarity if you get lost or cannot find the venue.
I got lost many times looking for particular clubs. China bans Google, Facebook, Gmail, Twitter & Instagram. So for communication with the locals install WeChat, which is the WhatsApp of China.
Start off your night at Sir Elly's on top of the Peninsula Hotel, this bar has the most mesmerizing view of Shanghai (Pudong business district), than head over a few blocks down the Bund for Bar Rouge.
Bar Rouge is the most popular bar in Shanghai where you can meet expats and many English speaking locals, make sure to go on Thursday for Ladies Night!
A little further down the Bund you'll find club M1NT, this amazing club on the 24th floor of an office building, has a massive shark aquarium in their hallway and often themed events.
Entrance is free that's why drinks start at $20, so make sure to pre-drink or come with a thick stack of bills.
A 10 minute cab ride from the Bund you'll are Fusion Nightclub in the French Concession, here you'll find a young often foreign crowd jamming to house & EDM. This place wasn't my cup-of-tea.
Than there is Linx Nightclub near People's Park, a super upscale club with many expensive cars parked up-front. The club was rammed with models and douchebags, although music was good.
Again Linx had free entrance as well with drinks starting at $20
Two other places worth mentioning is NEST, a lounge bar for great dining and predrinking with friends before you start your night and club MUSE across the street from NEST, MUSE actually really surprised me, this place had incredible DJ's, so make sure to check it out when you are in the area.
Luckily cab rides start at 18 yuan ($4) which usually covers the cost getting from club to club. If you don't speak Mandarin, make sure you have your hotel address written down so the cab driver knows where to take your drunk ass.
All-in-all, the Shanghai nightlife is pretty amazing and definitely worth checking out when stopping by in Shanghai.

Shanghai Airbnb Tour | USD30/night | Travelling in Shanghai, China
If you're looking for a budget airbnb to stay in Shanghai, this might just be the place for you! I have spent 2 weeks here and it's amazing.
(Please note that this is the price for 1 room not the entire villa.)
This was actually my very first time living in a Villa and sharing the flat with 3 generations. In Hong Kong unless you're very rich, otherwise it's pretty impossible to live in such a big place with so much space.
I was cooking here and working out at the gym at the basement. You'll love it if that's part of your daily routine.
Use my link for a 399HKD off booking on airbnb for the first time!
Airbnb Link:
(Please noted that this place is not at the city centre. It takes 5 minutes taxi (Less than 2 USD) getting to the closest metro station + around 30 mintutes getting to the city centre Jingan station. I would not recommend this if you are in a rush for this trip.)
If you're reading till this very end, a bonus tip for you if you're travelling here from aboard, download a VPN before you come. Ideally 2, cause if 1 doesn't work you still have another one as a backup. And it won't always work. It just won't.
I was using Astrill VPN for the entire 2 weeks and it works perfectly. I also have a subscription on ExpressVPN but, ... mmmm it didn't work most of the time while I was there. So pick it for yourself!

Shanghai DESIGN TOUR + Yunnan Food with Groupe Renault | Shanghai, China
In April of 2019, I was hired by the awesome Renault company to shoot a video for them in Shanghai, China. I spent 12 days exploring Shanghai and the cities of Suzhou and Hangzhou. Those videos are coming soon, but for now, please come along with me as I go on a Shanghai design tour with Groupe Renault and enjoy some authentic Yunnan food!
I was so excited to head out on Groupe Renault’s 24-hour Design Discovery China tour! I started at the Puli Hotel to meet with Anthony Lo (the vice president of exterior design at Renault). I attended a presentation that explained what goes into designing cars, the types of ideas that go into it, and why Renault chose China in the first place. Shanghai is a world leader when it comes to design!
After the presentation, I headed down to the lobby to find out why they chose the Puli Hotel to get inspired. Outside at the entry, there is a lot of beautiful bamboo. The exterior walls are made of Shanghai bricks, which are also quite stunning. There are also some awesome horse statues. I could see why this hotel was chosen to inspire Renault! The design is incredible.
We continued our tour of the hotel, including its terrace and spa, and then headed to the Museum of Contemporary Art. The area it’s in has a very strong history. The area is beautiful and includes gorgeous skyscrapers and an amazing park.
The museum is beautiful! There was lots of unique, graffiti-style artwork that featured a lot of cats. There’s even a piece inspired by Harley Quinn and the Joker! I learned a lot about the artwork there, including the pieces by Obey, who is known for designing President Obama’s famous 2008 campaign poster. I loved this museum! It’s such a cool place!
From there, we went to Lost Heaven Restaurant to have some Yunnan cuisine. I love Chinese food, so I couldn’t wait to dig in! I learned that the Yunnan Province is in the south of China and was linked to the Silk Road.
I started with a samosa, which was super greasy and crispy and contained vegetables and some nice beef. I added a spicy and sweet sauce to it for an extra kick! Then I tried an egg roll, which was also greasy, but good! I loved the cabbage in it.
Then I went with a cucumber, radish, cabbage, and carrot stir-fry and a dish with lots of veggies, nuts, and chilies. It was like a papaya salad! It wasn’t too hot; it was just right. I enjoyed it with a Tsingtao beer, which is the most popular beer in the world. It was very light and refreshing!
Next, I had beef with a nice glaze on it. There were some chilies in it, so it was hot! Because the Yunnan Province is so close to Myanmar, the food has a lot of southeast Asian influences.
The stir-fry was cold, crunchy, and moist and bursting with flavor. Then I went with fried eggplant. It was super soft and practically evaporated in my mouth! It was almost like crème brulee! Next was some pork neck, which was incredible! It was nice and fatty and tasted like Chinese-style ribs. I added a chili sauce to it. I loved everything, but the eggplant was the star for me!
Then we headed to the Yang Design Museum, which is located in a 100-year-old building and features a collection of old cars. Inside, I learned that the Yang Design actually helps Renault and other companies adapt their vehicles for Chinese consumers and that they have their own design museum!
I couldn’t help but admire a $2,800 high-tech, smart carbon fiber suitcase designed by them. There are also old-school travel trunks on display. They’re so colorful and beautiful! There’s also a showroom of vintage cars and much more!
Next, we went to Banma, where we learned about AI technology that will connect you to your car. I couldn’t wait to check it out! The technology is super-advanced and top secret, so I can’t tell you about it, but it was amazing!
I ended my day at the Shanghai Edition Hotel’s Punch Room to get some drinks! The bar is super chic and intimate and offers an incredible view of the city. What an amazing way to end my design tour with Groupe Renault!
I hope you enjoyed coming along with me on my epic design tour with Groupe Renault! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment! Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food content!

Shanghai DESIGN TOUR + Yunnan Food with Groupe Renault | Shanghai, China
CRAZY SPICY Chinese HOT POT at Hai Di Lao on Nanjing Road | Shanghai, China
Back in April of 2019, I took my second trip to the country of China. I headed to Shanghai to do a one-day job with an awesome company and built a three-city itinerary around it to give me ten whole days to explore! I hit up Shanghai as well as the cities of Suzhou and Hangzhou. I can’t wait to share my latest Chinese adventures with you!
Subscribe to Nea on Instagram:
After arriving in Shanghai earlier in the day, I headed out on my first evening with my friend Nea to eat some spicy Szechwan hot pot on Nanjing Road, the most famous road in the city. Come along with us on our fiery Chinese food adventure!
We arrived at Hai Di Lao, which is next to the metro exit. It’s on the fifth floor of a huge shopping mall. I thought the restaurant looked packed, but Nea didn’t think so!
We had an hour-long wait ahead of us, so we sat in their waiting area and had some sour plum juice and popcorn while we waited. The popcorn was really good and reminded me of cereal. I also ordered a strong Chinese amber lager. It was really good and only 10 yen, so around $1.40 U.S.
We waited about 15 minutes and were taken to our booth. You can order up to four different dishes, which cook over the grill set into your table. They even gave me an apron. We chose our hot pot soups from the menu since this branch didn’t have a buffet. There are lots of meat options including beef, pork, lamb, and more. I was so excited!
Our soups and meats came, along with lots of veggies. We still had noodles coming, too. Each soup had a different level of spice. I couldn’t wait to try them all. The meats cook in only two minutes!
I went for a spicy one, which wasn’t too spicy. Next was the crazy spicy one, which was super hot. My tongue felt like it exploded! Then I tried some mushrooms, which almost felt like tofu. It was so good! There were so many different flavors to choose from with the different meats, vegetables, and soups. The lightest one had no spice, while the hottest was like an inferno!
The tomato one was also spicy. I tried some delicious lamb and more mushrooms, which I loved. Then I tried the beef, which was super tender, and more spicy sauce. But now everything was spicy!
The mini cabbage was a little hot with a tomato base. Then I went with crunchy mushrooms with the least spicy sauce, as well as fermented bamboo. The tomato one was the spiciest! It was so hot! It makes your lips tingle!
The spice was so intense, I had to go back for some more beer!
Then we watched the noodle master pull noodles right in front of us. He whipped them around in huge arcs and yet they never touched the floor! It was so cool! They take two minutes to cook.
Then it was time to try the noodles! They were so hot, so I had to let them cool off a bit. The tomato base absorbed into the noodles and made it taste so good!
I avoided the ultimate spice and went for some meat and veggies in the rest of the sauces. It was super delicious and a little fatty. The best thing about hot pot is the way everything absorbs the sauce. And the best thing is, it only cost about $50 U.S.
After overeating, Nea and I headed back out onto Nanjing Road to explore this amazing pedestrian street. There are massive shopping malls, lots of skyscrapers, and restaurants. I even spotted a display for Avengers: Endgame that featured Lego faces and a huge Thanos statue with his sword!
The lights were slowly turning off as I explored the area after Nea headed off, but I’d see her again the next day. The language barrier here is real, so I suggest hiring a guide or finding an English-speaking friend when you come to China.
I hope you loved coming along with me and Nea on our spicy Chinese hot pot dinner! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel if you haven’t already so you don’t miss out on any of my upcoming travel/food content!

CRAZY SPICY Chinese HOT POT at Hai Di Lao on Nanjing Road | Shanghai, China
Shanghai's Best Restaurants! From Daimon to Jia Jia Tang Bao! ???????? ????
Shanghai in China is home to some of the tastiest dishes in the world. Join us as we visit some of the best restaurants in Shanghai to try out local Shanghainese fair as well as sample some of the city’s best international offerings. Our first stop is Jian Guo 328 where we try Shanghai’s famous Hong Shao Rou, delicious braised pork bites with quail eggs and chestnuts. Next, we visit 1970s-inspired Daimon on The Bund where they serve up Hong Kong-style food with a twist, such as Chilli Crab Xiao Long Baos and (our favourite) Claypot Rice with Iberico Ham! We also pop over to Shanghai's Xiao Long Bao institution Jia Jia Tang Bao for way too many of their famous Pork & Crab and Pure Crab Xiao Long Baos. We taste our way through upscale Hakkasan’s delicious lily bulb and prawn dumplings before finishing with an experience of Chinese-Italian fusion at Xixi Bistro in hip Xin Tian Di. It’s all in our latest episode of Hawker Style, our original videos series exploring street food from across the globe.

The Peninsula Hotel - rooftop bar Sir Elly's, Shanghai, China
Amazing views of Shanghai at night from Sir Elly's on rooftop at The Peninsula Hotel. Pricey staying at the hotel - 2 reasons - one is this bar Sir Elly's, the other is the Rolls Royce airport transfer... Great bar...
Best Underground Clubs in Shanghai
The five best underground nightclubs in shanghai.
Shanghai has a thriving underground music scene - which isn’t often documented.
This video gives an overview of the five best spots for decent electronic music in Shanghai.
This list will focus on the venue's:
atmosphere
sound system quality
booking quality
5. Celia
298 Xingfu Lu, near Pingwu Lu.
幸福路298号
I once visited and it was dead, I don’t remember too much about it, but remember they told me to come back after I was finished wherever I was meant to be going that night - its open late.
I know they sometimes have tech house bookings
4. C’s Bar
685 Dingxi Lu, near Yanan Xi Lu
定西路685号, 近延安西路
C’s is a little further out and you can tell from the décor, walls plastered in graffiti with some winding tunnels – I couldn’t even find the bathroom at first. I love these venues – full of character and I can only hope this sticks around in Shanghai. They seem to have various nights ran by different promoters – I’ve seen nights advertising techno, psytrance, acid and house. If they had a decent booking or two, this place might be number one.
3. Xspace
3/F, 77 Jiangning Lu, near Fengxian Lu
江宁路77号3楼, 近奉贤路
Great bookings – I saw pender street steppers there and I know efdemin will be there soon, however when I was there, the sound was not good enough and the venue lacks the atmosphere of others in this list.
2. ALL
2F, 17 Xiangyang Bei Lu, near Changle Lu
襄阳北路17号2楼, 近长乐路
Capacity around 400 - the quality of bookings here is probably only second to Elevator – which is sadly no longer with us – though I know they host many parties at Xspace (previously mentioned). I’ve seen Objekt and Kode 9 DJ here, both decent nights. I know Pariah also played, and Bruce will be playing too. The venue is cool, with extremely dim lighted seating in one half, and a dance floor in the other. The sound is better than some places on this list – but does not compete with modern sky lab.
1. DADA
115 Xingfu Lu, near Fahuazhen Lu
幸福路115号, 近法华镇路
Capacity around 200 - this place has a great amount of soul and atmosphere – with graffiti sprawled walls – bin bags for lockers – a gritty raised dance floor – and leather sofas for those who need a breather. They sometimes have bookings but usually just have local DJ’s playing techno, house, acid etc. They also run a hip-hop night on a Thursday. This place doesn’t have the most famous bookings or the best sound, but it can definitely show you a good night. There’s something about the dance floor, it just makes you wanna dance. This place feels a little more worn in and a little less sterile than the others on the list. I think that’s the key factor.
OTHERS
Mansion
851 Hongjing Lu, near Hongqiao Lu, Changning district
长宁区虹井路851号皇朝别墅B-18, 近延安西路
Really far out, crazy party house, residents play. Heard great things.
44KW
B1/F, 158 Julu Lu, near Ruijin Yi Lu
巨鹿路158号B1楼, 近瑞金一路
In found 158 – the reason I haven’t mentioned this in my top 5 is because I have not been there – I do know they have a void sound system and some great bookings – john talabot was there earlier this year, as well as someone else I cant remember.
I need to get there asap – it will probably be much higher up this list.
Modern Sky Lab
3/F, 188 Ruihong Lu, near Tianhong Lu
瑞虹路188号3楼, 近天虹路
Simply the sound – if you get the chance to see a good DJ here – go. They usually have bands play here – the week before I saw four tet here, cigarettes after sex were playing, anyway the venue is not my favourite – but the sound is impeccable.
Definitely worth a visit.
Café Des Stagieres at Found 158
B1/F, 158 Julu Lu, near Ruijin Yi Lu
巨鹿路158号B1楼, 近瑞金一路
This place is within an underground lair full of bars along Julu Road (Found 158). This place is full of expats and is sometimes known as “Laowai Dongwuyuan” which means Foreigner Zoo. So Café des stagieres is inside, it's originally French, they have decent beer on tap and residents play mostly disco and house, sometimes some other genres like reggae and dub may be playing – depending on the night.
THE TOP FIVE -
5. Celia
4. C’s Bar
3. Xspace
2. ALL Club
1. DADA
