Chinese BULLET TRAIN Business Class REVIEW + Chinese Spicy Noodles | Shanghai to Hangzhou
My trip to China in April of 2019 was a whirlwind of travel, incredible culture, fascinating history, amazing sites, and lots of spectacular food. It took me from Shanghai to Suzhou, back to Shanghai for a one-day job with Renault, to Hangzhou, and finally, back to Shanghai yet again. I loved every moment of this trip and am so excited to share it all with you!
After finishing up my one-day job with Renault in Shanghai, I got up on the morning of my eighth full day in China excited for my journey to the city of Hangzhou, where I’d spend my final two days in the country!
I would have to catch the bullet train to Hangzhou, which is famous for its West Lake, which has over 1,000 years of history. The ride takes 45 minutes and over 130 trains connect the two cities. I’d be riding Business Class, which costs 210 Yuan, or roughly $30.56. I highly recommend booking your ticket online, which saves a lot of time and prevents you from having to deal with sold-out trains, which are common in China!
I arrived at Hongqiao Station about 80 minutes before my train. You have to have your passport ready if you’re a foreigner. I headed through and went right, where you’ll see a lot of lines for tickets. It’s usually crazy busy here, so be prepared for that! There were easily 50,000 people there! Luckily, I had a picture of my reservation to show the teller.
After I got my ticket, I headed off to look for some breakfast. There was lots of fast food available, but I only wanted to eat Chinese food in China. There were lots of restaurants on the third level. I went with a restaurant called Bai Shi Jia, where I ordered soup noodles with spicy meat for 32 Yuan/roughly $4.66.
My noodles looked so good! I could see and smell the spice in it. I also had some mushrooms on the side.
I started with a sip of the broth, which was really spicy! Then I mixed everything together and dug in. I loved the spice! It wasn’t too bad, heat-wise. Remember, it’s considered good etiquette here to slurp your noodles! They were so hot, I was starting to break out into a sweat!
The noodles contained a lot of beef. It would really give me a lot of energy for the day. Then I went with some of the mushrooms to cleanse my palate and get rid of some of the heat in my mouth!
With 20 minutes until my train, I headed back down to my gate. The station is huge and is so busy. It’s overwhelming and there aren’t many people who can help you if you get lost or are unsure of where to go because most people in China don’t speak English. Instead, they usually speak their native language and Mandarin.
I headed through my gate and down to the platform. Once it arrived, I had only two minutes to board before it left.
Business Class was at the end of the train. It was super spacious with 5 seats. The seats are made of leather and have a TV attached to them as well as a tray. They give you snacks and water. The snacks include chocolate and biscuits. You can also extend and recline your seat if you want. It feels like a spaceship! I had to be quiet, though, because the other passengers in my car were sleeping.
After 45 minutes, I arrived in Hangzhou! I had 2 minutes to disembark because the train had other stops to make. I was planning on catching a Didi, which is the Chinese version of Uber, but I was told it was too complex and too hard to find, so I decided to get a taxi instead. The queue for the taxis was super long but it moved fast.
I showed my taxi driver my Airbnb address and then we were off!
I hope you enjoyed coming with me to Hangzhou! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

Filipino couple gets lost in SHANGHAI!
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE INTERNET,
I present to you 2 FILIPINOS LOST IN SHANGHAI: The Travel Vlog ! ????
This took me a hot minute coz I had so much footage (and corny jokes), but HERE IT IS. Finally. ????
Let us take 17+ mins of your life. Hopefully, it'll be worth it. See below for SHANGHAI travel tips:
Enjoy!
1.) Victor Robinson III took a Cebu Pacific flight direct to Shanghai! SO, yes... there are affordable flights to and from Shanghai and Manila. ???? ** not affiliated with CebPac**
2.) As most of you may already know, China has a GREAT WALL. Not the geographical landmark (although obviously they have that, too), but the INTERNET GREAT WALL - blocking most social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, you name it!), messaging apps (Viber, Telegram, WhatsApp, Messenger, basically ALL OF THEM except WeChat.), search engines and maps (YUP. NO GOOGLE MAPS.), Google Translate, and even email providers - if you use it on the daily (and it ain't Weibo, WeChat or Baidu) , it probably is banned in China... We knew that coming in, ironically, because of the INTERNET. ???? So, DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFOREHAND. Research the TOURIST DESTINATIONS you want to go to, SCREENCAP details of your hotel address (INCLUDE THE CHINESE VERSION. Very helpful for cab rides.), basically, DO EVERYTHING in advance and save everything!
3.) ... There ARE some ways around the GREAT INTERNET WALL OF CHINA though and one is using a HONG KONG SIM CARD for CHINA travel that I had bought in advance at a local HK 7-11. The ones at the Shanghai airport won't let you access all the above-mentioned sites. Hehe. I reckon that all your LOCAL sim cards will work also, VIA roaming! As long as you didn't get it in the Mainland and the signal is powered from elsewhere, there's a chance that it will work!
4.) Download a good OFFLINE map of Shanghai. Mine got corrupted and we basically had to literally find our way, but yeah... an offline map would definitely help.
5.) 'Wag papa-scam sa colorum cars sa airport like we did. HAHAHA. I mean, we'll never really know now if we would've paid a lot less for a normal cab... We paid quite a lot for the car, BUT we didn't have to wait in line and be afraid that the driver would take us in circles or misunderstand us. STILL, they're technically illegal and mej nabudol budol kami ni Ate into riding coz she semi-forced us and grabbed our luggage before we can say anything. I mean, we got to the hotel fast and safely... but it did cost us a bit. (She did say that there are late night charges for cabs and that it'll cost around the same but... who knows now?) HAHA.
5.) Get a hotel near a MTR station. I ALWAYS. ALWAAAAAYS say this to anyone who wants to travel anywhere in the world (that has a more efficient transport system to the Pinas. whooops.) We stayed at Novotel Clover and it was very conveniently located. Wootwoot.
6.) Be ready with CASH or CYBERCASH (on WeChat or PayMaya.) Would you believe that most of the establishments we went to no longer accept CREDIT CARDS? JUSQ GUYS. Nastress kami. We had limited money and I had all my credit cards. My UNIONPAY debit card saved our lives for some of the trip. Anyway, they mostly pay with APPS in China now. Wew. Sorry na.
7.) Don't buy souvenirs in Old Town Shanghai stores. Definitely masmahal. Just keep walking til you're past the center of Old Town and you'll see stores at the outskirts selling everything for less.
8.) As always, bring your own water/tumbler at any Disney park. HAHA.
9.) ... you could also bring small snacks in. Wag naman ulam levels. They say BAWAL to bring food into the park, but a family in front of me during security check literally had a PICNIC BAG full of fruits and snacks and they were let in! Wag naman tayo gumaya, but emergency snacks can save you!
10.) ALWAYS.HAVE.AN.UMBRELLA. We went in mid-November and it poured. SUPER ANNOYING. But at least we could still roam around since we both had umbrellas. I saw a lot of tourists stuck at the Bund sight-seeing tunnel (which is literally a VR tunnel so you won't really see anything of the city, just random VR animations in a tunnel. USELESS AND MISLEADING) coz they didn't have umbrellas.
11.) RIDES AND ATTRACTIONS YOU SHOULDN'T MISS AT SHANGHAI DISNEYLAND:
- TRON
- Pirates ride
- Peter Pan ride
- Pirates show (ride it out regardless if you don't understand Chinese. It's fun!)
- Parade
- Castle Show
- Castle FIREWORKS
- TRON
- TRON
- TRON
12.) Take pictures with the skyline both DAY and NIGHT.
13.) KLOOK has a lot of promos for Shanghai tours and attractions **also not affiliated with Klook, just stating facts** from cheaper Disney tickets to entrances to the iconic towers in the Shanghai city skyline. (We didn't go since it was raining and it would be a bit of a waste of money if we couldn't see a view.)
14.) You could go to Shanghai on a budget. But plan wisely and know what you want out of the trip. OH, AND DON'T FORGET TO GET A CHINESE VISA FIRST. YES, WE NEED A VISA.

Chinese STREET FOOD Breakfast Tour in Hangzhou + BULLET TRAIN to Shanghai | Hangzhou, China
My final day in China started off in the city of Hangzhou, where I set off early that morning to find a delicious Hangzhou-style breakfast! I couldn’t wait to fill up on more amazing, local food before I had to leave for Shanghai!
My street food search began in the old town near Hefang Street, a pedestrian street where you can find tons of restaurants. I found a Middle Eastern restaurant where they were making kulcha, a type of flatbread that I had tried in Amritsar, India!
This kulcha contained black sesame seeds, spring onions, and more! It was very thin and crispy and had a light and airy texture. The black sesame was very unique and almost gave it a chocolatey flavor! And because Hangzhou is the green tea capital of China, I had to have some! The tea and kulcha together cost 6 Yuan/$0.87 USD!
Then I found another spot selling thick, fluffy, biscuit-like cake. It was very dense and contained egg, onion, and maybe custard. It was crispy on the bottom and very sweet!
Then I headed over to one of my favorite spots to get a tofu sandwich. On the way, I passed souvenir shops, tea places, and a pharmacy. There are jerky kiosks on the street as well as shoe stores and a McDonald’s. The street is called Royal Street and it has an ancient stream going down the middle of it!
I passed through the gate, which served as the entrance to the old town when Hangzhou was the capital of China.
I ordered a thin crepe with spring onions and tofu. It was almost like a panini and was so crispy and flavorful! The spicy sauce provided a nice contrast to the sweet sauce. I was in tofu heaven!
I also ordered some wonton soup. They were almost like the slippery wontons I’d had a couple of days earlier. There’s a dense piece of pork in the middle, but the wonton wrapping around it slips right down your throat. The best thing about this place is that there were only locals there. I was the only Westerner! My crepe and wonton soup came to just 15 Yuan/$2.18 USD.
After that, I headed back to the gate and went inside, where there is a little museum with paintings and a diorama that shows what Hangzhou looked like when it was the capital of China. It was the biggest city in the world at one point and even amazed Marco Polo!
Then I headed back to my apartment, grabbed my bags, and headed to the train station. I recommend getting to the train station an hour before your train. I was a little behind schedule because I wanted to double- and triple-check that I had everything.
The train station is so big, it looks like an airport! After I got my ticket and passport, I went back upstairs and went through security. The station was super futuristic with lots of shops and restaurants. It felt like I was in a spaceport! There are even arrows on the floor that direct you to drinking water and the bathroom!
The business class lounge was super nice, with lots of snacks and drinks. The ladies there were really friendly! I tried a Chinese drink that turned out to be cold lychee juice! One of the ladies walked me straight to my gate and got me to the front of the line.
I arrived at the platform and boarded my train. This business class was large and had reclining seats with a TV and a tray table. There are thousands of bullet trains that connect Chinese cities. It’s the fastest way to travel; driving between Hangzhou and Shanghai would take 3-5 hours!
It only costs 210 Yuan/about $30 USD for a 45-minute ride. I loved watching the countryside go by. I was given a gift that contains chocolate, raisins, peanuts, biscuits, gummies, and braised beef!
After 45 minutes, we were back at Hongqiao Station in Shanghai!
I hope you enjoyed coming with me on my final street food adventure in China! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave me a comment. Also please subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!
