Shanghai, Jade Budha temple, China
Jade Buddha temple, Shanghai, China, 2012.
The Jade Buddha Temple (Chinese: 玉佛禅寺; pinyin: Yùfó Chán Sì; Shanghainese: Niueh-foe-tsaeh-zy, literally Jade Buddha Chan Temple) is a Buddhist temple in Shanghai, China.
Jade Buddha Temple (Yufo Si), Shanghai
Jade Buddha Temple (Yufo Si), Shanghai
Founded in 1882, the Jade Buddha Temple (Yu Fo Si) in Shanghai is a popular tourist destination for its two magnificent white jade Burmese Buddha statues.
History
The Yu Fo Si temple was founded in 1882 to house two white jade Buddhas brought from Burma the year before by a monk of Putuo Shan. Destroyed and then abandoned after the 1911, the temple buildings were reconstructed on the same site in 1918-28.
Now a monastery of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, the Jade Buddha Temple serves foreign tourists and local devotees in equal measures.
What to See
The Jade Buddha Temple is not famed for its architecture, which is very new and built in a standard Song Dynasty style, but the two Buddhas housed within. Both are made of white jade in Burma and depict Shakyamuni Buddha (the historical Buddha).
The most impressive of the two is the seated Buddha, 2 meters (6 feet 5 inches) tall, weighing 205 kg (452 lb) and decorated with semi-precious stones. The other statue is a serene and beautiful Reclining Buddha about 1 meter (3 feet 4 inches) long.

Even if you are not a Buddhist, the Jade Buddha Temple of Shanghai is certainly worth a visit. I tried to capture its tempo in this video.

Shanghai's 2,200-Ton Jade Buddha Temple Moved 100 Feet
This Buddhist temple is on the move...literally.
Shanghai's Jade Buddha Temple was relocated 100 feet. It weighs 2,200 tons and includes three huge Buddhist statues.
The movement was a delicate operation, as custom-built rails lifted and moved the temple around 20 feet a day. The temple attracts about 2 million visitors a year, and the original location was no longer considered safe due to overcrowding.

Chinese workers just relocated a whole temple
The relocation of the main hall of Shanghai's Yufo Temple, along with three huge Buddhist statues inside, was completed on Sunday (September 17), after being gradually moved around 30 metres north of its original place.
The structure and everything inside was moved six metres a day along specially-built rails and then lifted up by 0.3 metres every day, taking two weeks to complete.
The new location, which is 30.66 metres away and 1.05 metres higher than the original, has more room for an increasing number of pilgrims, in front of the main hall.
An estimated two million visitors come to the temple annually, the temple said, and the daily number exceeds 100,000 on some Buddhist holy days.
