Shankill Road Belfast

We spent a couple of days in Belfast during November 2013. These are video clips / images from a trip to the famous Shankill Road which is a staunchly British area of the city.

The IRA's Belfast brigade 1st battalion bombed the Woodvale Arms pub on the Shankill Road destroying the pub & damaging a number of other buildings. 18 people were injured in the bombing of the pub.

This video shows a parade which thousands not only took part in, but lined the streets to watch & support.

Those within this parade were retracing the steps of the West Belfast Ulster Volunteer Force of 1913.
Prior to this parade taking place, many from within the local community, & indeed some from as far as Scotland & England, freely volunteered, their time & experience, be it to put scaffold up, paint, cut grass, make uniforms, march etc to make the parade the great success it was.

Shankill Road People are proud people, proud of our Britishness, proud of our Royal Family, proud of our Military History & Sacrifice, & proud of our connection to, & within, the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom that we within Ireland, then, & Northern Ireland later, helped build.
On the day of the parade PUP Leader Billy Hutchinson replicated Lord Carson's speech in front of Fernhill House. A lovely house once owned by the Cunningham Family, from Scotland, a family who not only let their land be used by the UVF for training, but who also helped finance the arming of the UVF in 1913,

Rev Edith Query blessed the colours & quoted the UVF Prayer.
Billy Ervine gave the historical talk on the Ulster Volunteer Force.

The 1st Shankill Somme Association held it's annual remembrance memorial parade on the Shankill Road on Saturday 16th February 2019. This year is also the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Remembrance Garden which is located next to the Shankill Graveyard on the Shankill Road, Belfast.

The Shankill Road Defenders Flute Band lead the parade up the Shankill Road to hold a service of remembrance to the men who died during the Great War of 1914-1918 and of the men who served in the 36th Ulster Division, many of whom came from the Greater Shankill Road. Other Somme Association from around Belfast took part and the even had an Association from the Govan Somme Association in Scotland over for the event. British Army war veterans took part too.

Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. Most of Belfast is in County Antrim, but parts of East and South Belfast are in County Down. It is on the flood plain of the River Lagan. By population, it is the fourteenth largest city in the United Kingdom and second largest on the island of Ireland. It is the seat of the devolved government and legislative Northern Ireland Assembly. The city of Belfast has a population of 286,000 and lies at the heart of the Belfast urban area, which has a population of 579,276. The Larger Urban Zone, as defined by the European Union, has a total population 641,638. Belfast was granted city status in 1888. Historically, Belfast has been a centre for the Irish linen industry (earning the nickname Linenopolis), tobacco production, rope-making and shipbuilding: the city's main shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff, which built the well-known RMS Titanic, propelled Belfast on to the global stage in the early 20th century as the biggest and most productive shipyard in the world. Belfast played a key role in the Industrial Revolution, establishing its place as a global industrial centre until the latter half of the 20th century. Industrialisation and the inward migration it brought made Belfast, if briefly, the biggest city in Ireland at the turn of the 20th century and the city's industrial and economic success was cited by Ulster unionist opponents of Home Rule as a reason why Ireland should shun devolution and later why Ulster in particular would fight to resist it. Today, Belfast remains a centre for industry, as well as the arts, higher education and business, a legal centre, and is the economic engine of Northern Ireland. The city suffered greatly during the period of conflict called the Troubles, but latterly has undergone a sustained period of calm, free from the intense political violence of former years, and substantial economic and commercial growth. Belfast city centre has undergone considerable expansion and regeneration in recent years, notably around Victoria Square. Belfast is served by two airports: George Best Belfast City Airport in the city, and Belfast International Airport 15 miles (24 km) west of the city. Belfast is also a major port, with commercial and industrial docks dominating the Belfast Lough shoreline, including the famous Harland and Wolff shipyard. Belfast is a constituent city of the Dublin-Belfast corridor, which has a population of three million, or half the total population of the island of Ireland. Belfast has been the capital of Northern Ireland since its establishment in 1921 following the Government of Ireland Act 1920. It had been the scene of various episodes of sectarian conflict between its Catholic and Protestant populations. These opposing groups in this conflict are now often termed republican and loyalist respectively, although they are also referred to as 'nationalist' and 'unionist'. The most recent example of this conflict was known as the Troubles a civil conflict that raged from around 1969 to 1998. Belfast saw some of the worst of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, particularly in the 1970s, with rival paramilitary groups formed on both sides. Bombing, assassination and street violence formed a backdrop to life throughout the Troubles. The Provisional IRA detonated 22 bombs within the confines of Belfast city centre in 1972, on what is known as Bloody Friday, killing nine people. Loyalist paramilitaries including the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) and the Ulster Defence Association (UDA) claimed that the killings they carried out were in retaliation for the IRA campaign. Most of their victims were Catholics with no links to the Provisional IRA. A particularly notorious group, based on the Shankill Road in the mid-1970s, became known as the Shankill Butchers. In all, over 1,600 people were killed in political violence in the city between 1969 and 2001. Belfast was granted borough status by James VI and I in 1613 and official city status by Queen Victoria in 1888. Since 1973 it has been a local government district under local administration by Belfast City Council. Belfast is represented in both the British House of Commons and in the Northern Ireland Assembly. For elections to the European Parliament, Belfast is within the Northern Ireland constituency.

Republican Action Force bomb Mountainview Tavern on the Shankill Road, Belfast 5 April 195

The Republican Action Force (RAF) used as a cover-name by Volunteers of the Provisional IRA's Belfast Brigade carry out a bomb & gun attack on a pub in the Shankill road. 5 people were killed in the attack, 1 UDA member & 4 Protestant civilians. & 50 people were injured. The RAF claimed the attack was retaliation for a s string of mass killings carried out by both the UDA & UVF in Belfast since the IRA ceasefire with the British started in February 1975.

A sort of peaceful protest against those who would show their hatred of our Queen & Country by insulting us within the PUL community..
By putting a foreign flag onto Black Mountain these Sectarian Republicans Insulted the British Northern Irish Protestants & Catholics of Northern Ireland.
They know only too well that the PUL community see this as the flag that was used by Irish Republican Terrorists.
If a member of the PUL community tried to walk through Dublin with a Union Jack flag of any size, how far do you think they would get?
Not too far, as the Love Ulster Parade showed.
This song has been put together to try & defuse the situation. It makes light of what happened & although our community feels that they should have an apology from these thoughtless Republicans. We hope that they can take this in the good humour it deserves.
Is it true that some of those who took part in this insult against the PUL community are time served terrorists ?

Belfast Mayor attacked on Shankill Road by Loyalists

The lord mayor of Belfast, Sinn Fein's Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, has been jostled and heckled by loyalist protesters at the re-opening of a park in the Woodvale district of north Belfast.

He was escorted away from the trouble by the police and the ceremony was cancelled.

The police say nine of their officers received cuts and bruising.

The lord mayor said he will continue to represent everyone and there will be no 'no-go' areas.

Violent scuffles broke out at the official opening of the park and missiles were thrown at officers as well as at the lord mayor. Damage was also caused to his vehicle.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland's (PSNI) North Belfast Area Commander, Ch Insp Andy Freeburn, called the incident appalling and said the police would identify those responsible.

This should have been a positive day about the opening of a children's play park in the area, but instead was marred by disorder which has left a number of our community officers injured, he said.

'Hijacked'
Mr Ó Muilleoir later tweeted that as lord mayor he had promised to visit every part of Belfast, if invited.

There were a small minority of wreckers which hijacked the event and of course it turned violent, he said.

I want to commend the police, they took a lot of blows, I took some blows.

I think as first citizen you have to travel this entire city if you want to represent all the people. There can't be any no-go areas in Belfast in 2013.

Woodvale was the scene of recent rioting linked to a 12 July parade.

The Parades Commission ruled that three Orange Order lodges could not make the return journey past Ardoyne shops on Crumlin Road, an interface separating unionist and nationalist communities.

Five nights of rioting followed the decision.

The Parades Commission is the body that adjudicates on contentious parades in Northern Ireland.

Loyalists have also been involved in protests after a decision was taken by Belfast City Council to restrict the flying of the union flag to specific days of the year.

Alderman William Humphrey, DUP MLA for North Belfast, said the scenes at Woodvale were absolutely preventable.

We asked that the deputy lord mayor or the high sheriff carry out this duty here today, he said.

There is real anger, frustration. It started when the flag was removed. The lord mayor's party, the SDLP and Alliance came together to do that.

Condemned
This should have been a day of celebration for a £2m investment by the council and the Department of Social Development and quite honestly the lord mayor needs to understand he cannot make statements and go around doing press interviews calling for our flag to be removed, remove the flag, and then when he has a chain around his neck as lord mayor of this city, expect people to welcome him as first citizen.

That's not how it works in the real world.

Northern Ireland's Justice Minister David Ford said he wholeheartedly condemned the incident.

The police will be investigating this incident with a view to identifying those responsible and bringing them before the courts, he said.

Anyone going about their civic duty should be free to do so free from harassment, violence and intimidation. Such violence against elected representatives and the police must be condemned.

The city council and the Department for Social Development have invested a total of £4m to revitalise two community parks in Belfast.

One is Woodvale and the other is Dunville Park on the Falls Road.
