Devotees dip their hands into a boiling oil vessel and take out fried Vadas with bare hands from it in Shree Kanteri Kamakshi Ramanath Laxminarayan Temple of Kumta, Karnataka. Devotees who dip their hands in the boiling oil have not faced any problems like burning sensation or injuries on their hands.
The ‘Vada Seva’ (removing vada from boiling oil with bare hands) has been in practice at Shree Shanteri Kamakshi Ramanath Laxminarayan Temple in Kumta Town for five centuries. The vada is offered to Kamakshidevi every year on Full Moon Day (Shigi Hunnime or Bhumi Hunnime) in the town. Vada Seva is held as part of the 15-day Dussehra celebration that concludes on full moon day. On the last day of festival, thousands of people gather at the temple to witness the Vada Seva. Devotees who have vows will worship Goddess Kamakshi on the full moon day. After various poojas, the priest of the temple nods for the Vada Seva.
