Shaoguan Trip '15
An adventure of two travellers with obstacles to the tip of the mountain @ Shaogung. With similar minds, this should have been a smooth travel, but as with most memorable trips, the journey, and not the destination was the highlight of the trip. A little behind the scene story before the video. We had booked the train tickets in advance to ensure that we got a reliable mode of transport to and fro Shaoguan as I had a flight to catch back on the return day. We may have a been a little over confident with ourselves and got the 5pm trains, despite the arrival flight only scheduled to land at 1:30pm. And of course the journey started off with a minor flight delay but that was easily overcome but then not even 1 hour in Guangzhou - there was a attempted pickpocket and the phone was almost stolen but we managed to catch the guy before the subway door closed. And by the time we got to the train station, it was already 4:30pm. At that point of time, being in a huge train station with no english words in sight, we were running around like headless chickens to the information counter and from there to the ticket collecting booth (which of course had the longest queues). After spending what felt like hours in the ticket counters, we again started running to the departure halls and were faced with 3 baggage check points and having only 3 minutes left before the train leaves, we still didn't want to give up and ran from one end to another looking for the right departure hall. But alas, we had missed the train and had to queue up at the ticket change counter. When we got to the front of the line, we were told that the next available train was in 3 hours tine and we had to pay almost 300RMB excess cause it was on a different category. We got out of the line and contemplated, do we abandon the trip and just stay back in GZ or just pay up the difference and continue on. We decided we weren't gonna let this be something we regret in the future so we queued up ready to part with our 300RMB. But this time luck was on our side and it appears there was a last minute cancellation by two people for a train in the next hour and we managed to change our tickets free of charge. And this is where our video begins...

Korea's agricultural industry is seen evolving.
This company produces and distributes rice cakes.
The company's fusion-style brand Sotteok, made with rice cakes and sausages, is selling like hot cakes.
The company these days consume about 2.5 tons of rice per day to produce Sotteok. Its income from the product soared by more than 10 times during the past two years.
[Park Su-Gil, CEO, food company]
(South Korea) is self-sufficient in rice. Our customers' response (to 'Sotteok') has been great as it's a fusion style. It's a future-oriented business because it creates profits as a 6th industry.
In South Korea, agriculture as a sixth industry is being promoted through linking agro-food manufacturing, distribution, export and even rural tourism at the regional level.
The transformation of agriculture into a sixth industry is a main subject of the nation's key agricultural education programs for farmers for this year.
A series of farming classes customized for urban office workers who want to become farmers are getting more popular. Hands-on training courses for women in the use of farming machines and tools are also very popular.
[Kim Eun-Mi, participant of farming class]
Previously, I was afraid of those machines, but I will be getting along with them well after taking the class.
New technologies and information about the sixth industry are expected to help farmers boost their income.

Changing Landscapes of Santa Rosa Island -- Part 4
Have the ecosystems of California's Channel Islands changed over the decades? A project matching archival photos with modern images is offering USGS and National Park Service researchers a time machine to look into the past.
USGS Western Ecological Research Center scientist Kathryn McEachern and musician/videographer Trey Demmond worked with Channel Islands National Park to provide a unique then-and-now imagery set to study the changing landscapes of Santa Rosa Island. McEachern and Demmond revisited the locations where the historic photos were taken, in order to survey the vegetation and assess the changes.
Like much of southern California, the islands were used as ranches and military posts in the 1800s and1900s. Unlike the mainland, the National Park Service islands are now transitioning to conservation reserves for public use. These photographs show the changing land uses as barracks, roads and grass-covered rangelands are replaced with foot trails and native scrub. It is apparent from the photographs that change comes at different rates across the landscape, with moist places changing faster than dry sites.
The results give park managers a better understanding of how Santa Rosa Island's ecosystem has changed through shifts in human and natural history, and help us appreciate the fragile and enduring extremes of these island ecosystems hidden away off the bustling coast of greater Los Angeles. Note: reprint permissions for historic photos are on file with Kathryn McEachern.
