Covering an area of around 4.4 acres (18,000 square meters), the museum is located inside of the Temple of Confucius in Taiyuan, a city of Shanxi Province. According to historical records, Temple of Confucius was very small before the Ming Dynasty. It was reconstructed to a brand-new monastery in 1383 and named as Chongshan Monastery. Unfortunately, it was burnt down in 1864. Then Zhang Zhidong, the provincial governor of Shanxi Province, ordered to build the Temple of Confucius on the site of the monastery in 1881.

Shanxi, one of the birthplaces of Chinese nation, has written history for three thousand years. It is known as cradle of Chinese civilization and Museum of ancient Chinese culture.
There are many famous historic sites, and each has its own merits: the first mountain, Mount North Wudang, Qiao's Grand Courtyard, Niangziguan Fortress, Royal Prime Minister's Palace, the first gorge, Baquan Gorge, Mount Jue, Pingyao Ancient City, Wangmang Ridge, the first mountain in East Shanxi, Mount Cang, and Li's Grand Courtyard.
Shanxi should be about far more than these, but these scenic spots are just the tip of the iceberg of Shanxi mountains and rivers. Besides, religious culture, Shanxi merchants culture, and culture of the Yellow river are showing the rich and colorful tourism culture of Shanxi.

Shanxi - Chine
