Shaobo Luogu Xiao Paizi 邵伯锣鼓小牌子 music from Yangzhou, China
A Chinese TV documentary about Shaobo Luogu Xiao Paizi (邵伯锣鼓小牌子), a genre of traditional ensemble music (sometimes accompanying folk singing) from Jiangsu province in eastern-central China. It is named for the town of Shaobo (邵伯镇), just west of Shaobo Lake (邵伯湖), which is located between the cities of Gaoyou (高邮市) and Yangzhou (扬州市), both located on the north side of the Yangtze River, which is called the Subei (苏北) region in Chinese.
Shaobo Luogu Xiao Paizi is considered a form of shifan music (十番音乐). The term shifan (十番, meaning many kinds, literally ten kinds) refers to a large ensemble comprising many kinds of instruments, usually including diverse types of wind, string, and percussion instruments. Such ensembles were especially popular for ceremonial and festive music in many parts of China, especially during the Qing Dynasty, and many shifan traditions continue to the present.

Jiangdu was formerly a county-level city (江都市) under the administration of Yangzhou, until its status was reduced to that of a district in November 2011. The film was written by the Shaobo Town People's Government (邵伯镇人民政府) and produced by the Yangzhou Dayang Audio and Video Company (扬州大洋音影公司).
Shaobo Luogu Xiao Paizi, centering on the Jiangdu District of Yangzhou, was included as one of 123 traditions in the First Batch of the Jiangsu Province Intangible Cultural Heritage List (第一批江苏省非物质文化遗产名录), announced on March 24, 2007.
Shaobo Luogu Xiao Paizi, centering on the Jiangdu District of Yangzhou, was further acknowledged by its inclusion as one of 147 traditions included in the Expansion Project for the First Batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China (第一批国家级非物质文化遗产扩展项目名录), announced on June 7, 2008. It was included under the heading of Shifan music (十番音乐), which also included several other shifan traditions from other parts of China.
