Shap Abbey, Cumbria, UK - 3rd September, 2013
Shap Abbey was a monastic religious house of the Premonstratensian order on the western bank of the River Lowther in the civil parish of Shap Rural, around 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the village of Shap, in the Eden District of Cumbria, England. The site is in the care of English Heritage and managed on its behalf by the Lake District National Park.
While staying near Shap for the week, we ventured down to Shap Abbey, now a ruin, but a fairly impressive one at that. This video features footage of the abbey ruins as well as the surrounding countryside, including the River Lowther, chickens in a large coup, and luscious green fields.

Exploring Cumbria - Shap Stone Circle and Abbey
Continuing my exploration of Cumbria with Robert Croser I am in Shap on the A6 to seek out a stone circle that Victorian engineers deemed unimportant when they built the railway.
We also visit the magnificent ruins of Shap Abbey.

Abbey at Shap in Cumbria UK.
16th Century Abbey located at Shap in the Lake District, Cumbria UK. This ruin was once a thriving centre populated by Monks prior to the disolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII. Henry was refused a divorce by the Roman Catholic church so, he sacked that religion and started his own calling it The Church of England. I mean SERIOUSLY he did this and in doing so he raided all the churches and lifted their possessions, in the name of his new religion.
Lake District Country Walk Shap Abbey from Rosgill via Keld round
The adapted version of Alfred Wainwright's A Pennine Journey was edited by David Pitt of Rosgill whom we met on this walk.
Our video is a guided walk in the Lake District, Cumbria. Starting from the bridge just south-west of Rosgill near Shap we walk to the lovely hamlet of Keld and after passing the Chapel of Keld we continue on to Shap Abbey. We return to Rosgill following the River Lowther.
This is an easy walk on good paths and tracks mostly grassy through fields. There is also some minor no-through road between Tailbert and Keld.
Elevation: approx lowest point 191.60m (628.61ft) approx highest point 290.90m (954.40ft)
Approx 5.15 miles allow 2½ plus extra time for visiting Shap Abbey using OS Explorer Map OL5 The English Lakes North Eastern area.
Start point: At the bridge over the River Lowther, south west of Rosgill near Shap.
For more info and facilities please see our website.

My Coast ot Coast Walk - Day 5: Patterdale to Shap (via Kidsty Pike) - 19/06/2019
Welcome to the fifth instalment of my 13 day journey across England following Wainwright's Coast to Coast Walk.
As you will see if you watch, I try to take in a few of the higher routes along the way, including Haystacks on day 2, Calf Crag on day 3, Helvellyn on day 4, Kidsty Pike on day 5 and into the Mines between Keld and Reeth on day 8.
I did the walk for charity as you can see, raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust. As I upload this, I have raised over £1000! A fantastic effort from all who have donated so thank you all from the deepest depths of my heart. justgiving.com/fundraising/pipes-hikes-c2c while there's still time.
So day 5 sees me set off from Patterdale which was last nights stop. I left the Village Store after getting breakfast there and the climb began, it went on and on and on... Roughly 5 miles of continuous climbing which passed the very picturesque Angle Tarn and eventually ended up at the summit of Kidsty Pike. Fantastic views to be had from here! The route then dropped steeply down to Haweswater, where you walk along the edge of the lake. Don't be fooled though, this is no easy stroll around a lake, it has more than it's fair share of elevation. I came across my first honesty box just beyond the lake and a welcome treat it was too. Then I head for the ruinous Shap Abbey and Shap beyond. A tough tough day today but well worth it for the scenery.
I have included everything that I want to remember from my journey in my videos, I hope that it is of interest to those tuning in too.
To see a map of today's route, head here: but you will need to be a subscriber to OS Maps in order to view anything more than a basic map.
wobbbbly does Shap.

Me, Neil, Eleanor, Luci, Craig and the gang did Total Warrior 2013 up in the Shap hills. Awesome day.
LDWA Three Rings of Shap 2015
The Three Rings of Shap Challenge Walk 2015 organised by the Cumbria section of the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA). Held on Saturday 13th June 2015.
Here's a link to my photos:
Based at Shap Memorial Hall, Shap, Cumbria, it consists of three separate walks of 18, 24 & 20 miles, each walk starting and finishing at the Memorial Hall with a total length of 62 miles (100kms). It is very popular with runners as well as walkers. In fact it is nearly only runners who finish the three rings.
From Cumbria LDWA: Each Ring starts and finishes at the Event HQ in Shap where there are full facilities with hot food and drinks available all day. We are hoping to provide showers again next year - albeit at the swimming club across the playing field! Please note that each Ring will only have ONE manned checkpoint at approximately half distance and will just provide cold drinks and simple food. Be prepared to carry your own supplies of food & drink if you want to supplement this provision.
RING 1 - MOSEDALE 18 miles (29Km), approx. 900 m. ascent.
Checkpoints - Branstree (478 099) unmanned self-clip
Truss Gap (515 132)
Travelling west from Shap this ring passes above the aptly named Wet Sleddale reservoir to reach remote Mosedale Cottage via quiet and secluded moorland. It then ascends two of Haweswater’s “Wainwrights”, Branstree and Selside Pike, offering superb views of High Street and Eastern Lakeland. Descending to the hidden valley of Swindale with its magnificent waterfalls and the Truss Gap checkpoint the route returns to Shap through the hamlets of Rosgill and Keld passing historic Shap Abbey on the way.
RING 2 - LYVENNET, LEITH & LOWTHER 24 miles (39Km), approx. 700m. ascent
Checkpoints - ‘The White Stuff’ Barn (573 252)
Road Junction (517 194) self-clip, drinks only
A fine low-level journey through farm and parkland visiting the quiet Westmorland villages of Reagill, Morland, Hackthorpe & Bampton Grange etc. and providing an intimate view of the three eponymous and little known rivers . Even on its own this walk is no pushover.
RING 3 – GREAT ASBY 20 MILES (32Km), approx. 750m. ascent.
Checkpoint - Field (668 117)
In complete contrast this ring follows Wainwright’s Coast-to-Coast route out of Shap for several miles before leaving it to explore the National Nature Reserve of Great Asby Scar in classic limestone country. It returns from the checkpoint near Great Asby, now on the Westmorland Way, passing through Crosby Ravensworth and Oddendale on the way back to Shap.
45699 Powers the Great Britain IX towards Shap summit on the 3/5/16.
LMS 45699 Galatea was in charge of day eight of the Railway Touring company railtour The Great Britain IX after the Ian Riley Black 5 started the day from Inverness to Mossend up Yard where 45699 would then take the tour over Beattock to Oxenholme . We see 45699 at Great Strickland going well but running late hence the sun went behind a big cloud. I managed to get her shortly after leaving Oxenholme but she is seen running slowly due to a reported hot box .

St. Michael's Church, Shap, Cumbria, England - 2nd September, 2014
St. Michael's Church in Shap is a Church of England church. The site of the church has had a church on it since 750 A.D., with a stone built church since 1150 A.D. It was served by cannons from the nearby Shap Abbey.
This film features views of the church from the outside and inside. Outside the cemetery, a celtic cross, flowers, a wooden cross and the church building are featured. Inside the stained glass windows, decor, furniture, structure and religious iconography are the focus of the film.
