Saba Dive Sites - No.5 Shark Shoals - Dutch Caribbean
Mooring Depth: 40 feet (12m)
Maximum Depth: 80 feet (24m)
So named because of the hot water springs coming through vents in the sea floor, this dive site is proof positive that Saba's volcano is merely in between periods of eruption, not extinct. Pick a dive here! Head seaward from the mooring and then south over a series of coral heads separated by a sandy bottom. A huge anchor (one of several at this dive site) is a good point to turn inshore and back to the mooring. Alternatively, head seaward and then north for a shallower dive among the coral encrusted boulders before heading back to the mooring. Check out the extremely friendly resident Nurse Shark, Stingrays, Garden Eels hiding in the sand and Turtles grazing in the seagrass next to Flying Gunards. A favorite site for night dives, crustaceans can always be spotted out dancing in front of their lairs. Other night dive highlights are octopus, sharks on the hunt and Ostracods, tiny crustaceans which create a one of a kind bio-luminescence display when they are mating.

Shark Shoals Saba 2015 08 31
Shark Shoals is one of the pinnacle dives off the island of Saba. The top of the pinnacle is at around 90 feet and goes down to around 300 feet. My max depthfor this dive is around 110 feet.
Not a lot of wildlife in this video, but a lot of colorful coral and sponges. If you get bored, zip forward to about 8:10 to see a barracuda swimming at around 120 feet, just out of my range.
Enjoy.

Bull sharks are not a common species around Saba.
This was filmed during my internship at the Saba Conservation Foundation while I was out on the Saba Bank
Note: this is the music the captain was playing. I have no clue what the song is or do I own this song. All right go to the artist.

Finding The Needle in Saba Marine Park
We saw this dark blob--it was scary! Joan and Lou Bourque are the original owners of Sea Saba Dive Center. Together with Ed Arnold, they are the pioneers who discovered most of Saba Dive sites. As they were out in the blue at Saba's pinnacles one day, a dark shadow beckoned them...watch and listen as Joan tells what it was like 28 years ago...
Diving in Saba
In December 2016 I had 8 beautiful dives with the team at Saba Divers. I took a little GoPro type camera with me and here is some of the footage which barely shows how lush the diving is around this beautiful island.
First documented sightings of Silky sharks on the Saba Bank
During an expedition to the Saba Bank, we documented one of the first sightings of the shark species: Carcharhinus falciformis, also known as Silky sharks. It was an amazing experience. Eventually we were swimming with 10 of these!
