Snorkeling In Shark's Cove / Pupukea Beach Hawaii
Snorkeling In Shark's Cove / Pupukea Beach Hawaii.
Tips:
-watch out for sea urchins
-footwear not required but recommended (cheap at foodland across the street if you forget)
-If it is winter swell season watch for big waves... if you are near the edge they will knock you back when water starts to rush in.
-Try not to step on coral / at all. A successful snorkeler just floats and does not disturb the water / ground around them.
Not a ton of the craziest fish here, but I did see a couple of very fast moving and very colorful large-ish (~15 long, 6 high) while I was there. I thought it was very enjoyable!
Shark's Cove on northshore of Oahu, Hawaii, USA
Shark's Cove is not named after the animals that live there. It is named after the shark fins like sharp lava rocks covered the whole area. It is a cove with a sheltered tidal pool where you can snorkel near the opening to the ocean, or walk on the reefs or wade in shallow water to see tiny animals in the tide pools. The opening to the ocean is at the north end of the cove, the further you go south, the fewer and smaller the fish. The Cove is like a big basin and the south end is totally closed off in low tide with no ocean wave. Small children can play in the tide-pool when it is at low tide. Take caution getting in and out of the area because the rocks are very sharp and a fall can do a lot of damage.
It is located on the North shore of Oahu in the Pupukea Beach Park. See the youtube location map and zoom way in to see its location.
It is walking distance to the 3 tables. See my other video on snorkeling at 3 tables in the summer months.
This place is reachable by city bus route 52 from Waikiki. Use Google Maps public transportation direction for details. or visit

See for a video of the same location but shot in winter time. In winter, huge wave pounds the north shores of Hawaii islands.

Shark's Cove, North Shore, Oahu
Everyone says you have to snorkel Shark's Cove on the North Coast of Oahu. It is very popular, but still worth seeing is the word. When I got there the beach was full of people and I was not sure how they would all fit in the small cove. Scuba divers seemed to be the dominant life form kicking out from the beach.
I have to say the topography and fish life was breathtaking and 100% worth dealing with the crowds. I had a blast swimming through arches and underwater caves. I heard this area is closed to fishing, so the discarded fishing gear I found everywhere else was lessened.
Went back a few days later and the swell had jumped up making this cove 100% undiveable. If you are planning to check out this great diving spot, be sure to check the swell conditions beforehand.
Shot on May 18, 2013.

Hi! We're just your average husband and wife flying around the world in business class for FREE. Without our miles and points, we never would have been able to afford this once-in-a-lifetime experience. We grew up on opposite sides of the United States in Texas and Ohio. Later in college, we met and got married in August of 2016. As poor newly weds and recent college grads, we moved to New York City to begin what we thought would be our long careers in finance. Only one year later, after accumulating over 2 million points through travel hacking, we booked round-the-world business class tickets to over 40 countries. Completely for free, using the personal travel hacks we had learned to save us $62,000. We quit our jobs, sold everything we owned, and began this once-in-a-lifetime adventure on August 27, 2018. Our hope is to entertain and enrich you every day through our daily videos, as well as share the personal travel hacks we're using to travel the world for free :) Let's be friends :) say hello sometime!

Shark's Cove in Pupukea Park, just across the street from my hotel. In the summer it is an excellent place for snorkeling whilst in winter the waters are rough, therefore, no swimming in that place.
