It is believed that the Shatrunjay hill of the Palitana district of Gujarat was where Lord Adinath, the (messenger) of the Jain religion, attained his salvation. In memory of this epic moment, his son, Chhatrapati Bharat, the King, laid the foundation of the very first temple on top of the hill. As years went by and tirthankar after tirthankar spread a new philosophy of peace and non-possessiveness across the nation, so did his aspiration grow to build temples on the pious hill.
And so, in a span of almost 900 years, hundreds of white ivory spires emerged on top of the Shatrunjay hill and transformed it into the place of pilgrimage that every follower of the Jain religion must take at least once in his lifetime to attain the Bhavya status – a stage when you are considered fit to attain salvation.
What lies on the peaks of the Shatrunjay hills today, is nothing less than a modern-day miracle. From a distance, it appears as if innumerable marble miniatures are standing at attention and craving to touch the blue limitless sky. On the southern end of the hill, the Shatrunjay River flows with calm continuity.
If pilgrims come here to connect to their spiritual side, for others it is indeed a gateway to understanding the religion, art, and architecture of the peaceful liberators.
The resurgence of Jainism in 6th century BCE is seen as a reaction to the predominant religious system known as Brahmanism, which used rituals and animal sacrifices in religious ceremonies.
Tirthankars
The first of the tirthankars was Lord Adinath also known as Rishabhdev and the last was Lord Mahavira. The Shatrunjay hill temples of Palitana are where one can see the idols of all the twenty-four tirthankars. Positioned in a seated posture, the idols imbue the Jain philosophy of peace and spiritual vitality with hands in dhyanmudra (meditation), and eyes reflecting the attainment of enlightenment. With minimal anatomical details and greater emphasis on the idea of spiritual bliss, all the idols look identical.
For visitors and devotees alike, the ascent to the hilltop usually begins before daybreak. In the wee hours of the morning, when the sun is yet to rise from its slumber, it seems easier to climb the 3764 steps and also be in time for the daily rituals at the summit of the temple.
It is usually with great fanfare that the idols are bathed everyday and purified with water, milk, honey and sugar – a ritual that the devotees too can take part in, wearing appropriate garments. The temple clusters have been divided into nine principal enclosures called as the tunks, each named after its principal benefactor. Standing more as monuments of history than religion, these tunks have many common elements and yet each one appears to have a distinction of its own.
The rare display of artistic finesse reflected in the intricate designs that extend from steps to ceilings and the sensitivity of architectural precision transform this space into perhaps one of the largest open air museums of the Jain religion.
Holiest of the Holiest
The holiest temple among the cluster, according to Jain pilgrims, is the Adishwar Bhagwan temple dedicated to Lord Adinath. This 12th Century temple is a two-storied structure with the marble image of the deity bedecked with gold ornaments and studded with jewels.
With its façade, carved with the nine symbols of Jain tradition, and ivory spire soaring high above all others, the temple is hard to miss. What is interesting to note is that while most temples have the principal deity as Lord Adinath, the artistic impressions vary, giving them their unique identity. For example, the Chaumukhi temple becomes noteworthy because of the quadruple image of the tirthankar gazing in all four directions. Symbolizing his first sermon after the enlightenment. The idol at the Nadishwar tunk, on the other hand, sits amidst a spectrum of colour reflected on it from stained glass windows.
The base of the hill has a shrine of the Jain Agam scriptures, and other shrines with holy footprints of Lord Adinath as well as other tirthankars and their followers. There are also several kunds (water bodies) like the Suraj Kund, Bhim Kund and the Ishwar Kund. For those interested in knowing more about the religion of Jainism and its passage through history, there is even a Jain museum located on the lower reaches of the hill.
A place carrying many legends
Consequently, there is a temple dedicated to the Pandavas located behind the Chaumukhi temple. This shrine has the idols of the five Pandava princes along with Draupadi and their mother, Kunti. Of the numerous Hindu temples in India, this too is thus one of the most revered.
To gain that status, many perform the circulatory pilgrimage of the mountain that may be of 1.5 kos (4.8 Km), 6 kos (19.3 km) or 12 kos (38.6 km). These yatras (pilgrimages) are considered to be necessary to help them get rid of the evils of their past deeds and make the journey to Nirvana (salvation) more rapidly.

મોટેભાગના જૈનો ઝારખંડ (સમેતશિખર), માઉંટઆબુ કે ગિરનાર કરતાં પણ પાલિતણાને વધુ અગત્યનું માને છે. એવી માન્યતા છે કે દરેક જૈન વ્યક્તિએ એના જીવનકાળ દરમ્યાન એકવાર તો પાલીતાણાની યાત્રા કરવી જ જોઇએ.
ગોહિલ રાજ્પુતોના રજવાડાનું પાટનગર પાલીતાણા હતું. આ શહેર પરદેશીઓ માટે દેરાસર સંકુલ ના બેજોડ સ્થાપત્ય માટે આકર્ષણ જમાવે છે.પાલીતાણા શહેરમાં પણ ઘણાં દેરસરો અને હવે તો આધુનિક સુવિધાઓ વાળી ઘણી ધર્મશાળાઓ અને ભોજનશળાઓ છે.

One of the popular pilgrim centre for Jain's in India, the Palitana Jain Temple complex is situated at Shatrunjaya hill in the city of Palitana in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. It is said that the temple complex consists of around 863 marble-carved temples. The main temple of Palitana is dedicated to Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara; it is the holiest shrine for the Svetambara Murtipujaka sect of Jainism.

Shatrunjaya (place of victory against inner enemies)[1] originally Pundarikgiri), also spelt Shetrunjaya are hills located by the city of Palitana, in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, India. They are situated on the banks of the Shetrunji River at an elevation 164 feet (50 m) above sea level. These hills have similarities to other hills where Jain temples have been built in Bihar, Gwalior, Mount Abu and Girnar.[2]
The Jain's sacred site of Shatrunjaya contains hundreds of Palitana temples.[3] The hills were sanctified when Rishabha, the first tirthankara of Jainism, gave his first sermon in the temple on the hill top.[4] The ancient history of the hills is also traced to Pundarika Swami, a chief Ganadhara[5] and grandson of Rishabha, who attained salvation here. His shrine located opposite to the main Adinath temple, built by his son Bharata, is also worshiped by pilgrims.[6][7]
There are several alternate spellings, including Śatruñjaya, Satrunjaya, Shetrunja, and Shetrunjo. Shatrunjaya was also known as Pundarikgiri as Pundarik was said to have attained nirvana on this mountain.[8] Alternate names include Siddhakshetra or Siddhanchal as many thirtankaras are stated to have received enlightenment here.[9]

3,500 Steps up Shetrunjaya Hill to The Jain Complex of Palitana India
Prepare to ascend 2,000 feet from sea level. A lot of ascent even for very fit people. It's no wonder litter bearers surrounded Travels With Sheila, convinced this wimpy-looking westerner would never make it.
All visitors need permits. It is forbidden to photograph any of the idols at the top. You can eat and drink on the way up but once in the Jain Complex proper, nothing to eat, drink, shoes or leather are allowed.
Putting feet on step number one before 8:00 am, we slowly began the upwards journey surrounded by pilgrims, Jains, nuns, monks, litter bearers. The elderly, fit, obese, men, women, and children, all astounded to see westerners.

The temple at Hastagiri completed my Panch Tirth and has left a lasting memory. It is an amazing temple and I had a good fortune off a guided tour by a learned Pujari , who explained the history of the temple and the scientific technology in construction.

Travels With Sheila painfully inched her way between the legs of a Confession Camel. It is said that if you can squeeze through the legs of this life-sized camel, all sins will be absolved. Husband, Steve? No way could half of him get through.
Each Jain Temple usually stood in a courtyard surrounded by more temples, pavilions, a riot of spires and decoration. (I think they al contributed to the 863 total temple count, but won't swear to it.) The courtyards also held individual alcoves containing statues of a tirthankara (prophet), 24 in all.
Worshippers sat outside silently reading prayer books, offerings set in front of them, making their devotions. A constant flow of people, riot of color and so engrossing, we didn't know where to look first. One warning...those little, hard grains of rice used for devotions are painful to step on with bare feet.

The city of the same name, known previously as Padliptapur, has been nicknamed City of Temples. Along with Shikharji in the state of Jharkhand, the two sites are considered the holiest of all pilgrimage places by the Jain community. As the temple-city was built to be an abode for the divine, no one is allowed to stay overnight, including the priests. The summit of Shetrunjaya Hill behind Palitana town has the most revered Jain Temple Complex in the world, surpassing those of Mt. Abu and Ranakpur. Referred to as Palitana, pilgrims must climb 3,500 steps to the top where 863 elaborate temples await them. OMG... What goes up must come down the same 3,500 steps.
Up before the crack of dawn for the 1-1/2 hour drive to Palitana on very narrow, dark and twisty roads while cows and people walked on and along them. A small miracle how neither people, cows nor us were killed on the drive. Once in Palitana town, a frenetic mob scene. Pilgrims, Jain monks and nuns, sellers and litter bearers. Yes, you can be carried up and down the steps. ex-Marine and Travels With Sheila were mesmerized by the action...

Palitana Temples are situated in Bhavnanagar district of Gujarat. The temples are exquisitely carved in marble, veritable prayers in stone. The temple covered Shetrunjaya hill, 2000 ft over Palitana town, believed to span 863 shrines in all. It has some really exquisite marble temples of great religious and artistic importance, containing arches, carved pillars and bejeweled idols. Palitana was the capital of a princely state of the Gohil Rajput clan. The Palitana temples are considered the most sacred pilgrimage place by the Jain community. Palitana houses perhaps the largest cluster of Jain temples anywhere.
Walking Down 3,500 Steps From The Jain Temple Complex of Palitana, India
What goes up, must come down the same 3,500 steps from Palitana. People were still ascending steps as we began descending around 11:00 a.m. in intense heat. By the halfway mark, a constant refrain of, cheap dolly...cheap dolly from the litter bearers.
I took it slow on the easy steps, stopping to people watch along the way, and even counting steps until I'd lose track and have to begin at zero again.
Jains performing a time-consuming ritual on the way up tired me out just watching. One person would pour a little holy oil on the step. The next person would lay a rose, few grains of rice and, occasionally, silver paper. While still another waved burning incense over the entire offering. This was repeated on every, single one of the 3,500 steps! Now, that...is devotion....

This site on Shatrunjaya hill is considered sacred by Jains and have hundreds of temples. There are approximately 863 marble-carved temples on the hills. It is said that 23 tirthankaras (a human being who helps in achieving liberation and enlightenment), except Neminatha (a liberated soul which has destroyed all of its karma), sanctified the hill by their visits. The main temple is dedicated to Rishabha, the first tirthankara; it is the holiest shrine for the Svetambara Murtipujaka sect. Digambara Jain have only one temple here.
